It's ironic that a guy who tried so hard to cheat old age with a scalpel ended up dying so young. RIP

Swine Flu. Anyone here come down with it?
papsrus replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I've known a few swines, and some folks who've gotten the flu, but strangely very little overlap there. -
Happy Birthday papsrus!!!

Yum. I'd go for it, but I'm trying to cut down on the carbs. -
I group discs alphabetically and by era. So I have discs listed alphabetically for pre-40s music, then again, alphabetically starting at "A" for 40s - 60s, then again for 60s - present. I also separate out artists where I have a large number of discs by them (Ellington, Parker, Miles, etc.) These are grouped separately from the bulk of the discs. Works for me, so far. But it's not a sprawling collection. Under 1,000.

Ordered a couple of things last night: Giants of Small Band Swing, vols. 1 & 2 Libby Holman -- "Moanin' Low - Early Recordings 1927 - 1934" I was led to the Holman by some tracks she appears on recorded July 1929 with The Cotton Pickers on the Timeless Historical release "The Original Memphis Five, Napoleaon's Emperors, The Cotton Pickers 1928 - 1929." A wonderful disc. The tune with Holman that caught my ear was "He's a Good Man to Have Around," of which there are both a vocal and instrumental version on the Cotton Pickers disc. Lovely tune. Anyways, looking forward to all three of the above.

Happy Birthday papsrus!!!

Thanks all! Going to see mom and dad for lunch, then walk some dogs at the humane society, then dinner with my girl. Maybe squeeze in a trip to the beach somewhere in there. ... Thanks again for the birthday wishes. -
And the highest-scoring team in baseball is on deck for a little rematch of last year's WS.

Today, the longest day of the year (in the northern hemisphere), makes me smile. -

Sascha Baron Cohen (Ali G.)

Really? Man, that seems like one step removed from mooning. I guess it's all subjective, but over-the-top, in-your-face "comedy" kind of fails with me precisely because it's over the top. That Stern flunky who went on Joe Buck's HBO gig last week (video is all over the net) wasn't funny. His only comedic talent was to be as much of an asshole as he could in order to embarrass Buck as much as possible. Not really that funny. More like a car wreck. You gotta look, but you kind of squirm as you go by. IMO -
Oppressive heat. Feels-like temperature was around 110 the other day. Remains hot and humid through the night.

Sascha Baron Cohen (Ali G.)

Yeah, Sykes was a good foil for Larry on "Curb." Saw her on HBO doing stand-up and she wasn't nearly as funny delivering one-liners. Kinda like Michel Richards' character on "Seinfeld." Very funny. But his stand-up act turned out to be a disaster for him. As for Sascha Baron Cohen ... meh. The difference for me is that the characters on "Curb" and "Seinfeld" were/are all about pointing out their own absurd character flaws and neuroses, and by extension the absurdities and neuroses in us all. Their fears or mistrust of other people could all basically be traced back to there own shortcomings. Without having watched his schtick all that closely, I get the impression Cohen is all about mocking not his own flaws (and by extension, the flaws in all of us), but rather, he picks out easy targets from a rather lofty perch and applies the hammer-to-the-ant method to make the obvious point that, "Hey, look at these assholes!" Maybe I misread him, but that gets old pretty fast. IMHO -
Don't know about their internet services, but Comcast in general blows, IMHO. I wouldn't be surprised if they were squeezing bandwidth on you. If so, you'll probably not get a straight answer out of whomever happens to pick up (or not!) their phone. ... Would be interested to hear what they tell you though. Have you tried picking up a wireless network in your area and testing the download that way?

Friend of mine knows this woman who had a standard office job. She recently found out she had breast cancer. Mastectomy. Cancer may have spread. More surgery needed after recovery. But while still recovering from the mastectomy she was laid off. ... Now that's depressing. I assume Cobra will/may cover the cost of some of her additional medical treatments in the near term, but man, can you imagine the person who had to tell her she was out of a job? I'd quit before I'd do that, I think. And on the way out the door I'd tell the MF who made the decision that they were stirring up some major bad karma.

Jazz At the White House

I had a flashback to "The Shining" there for a second. -
What do you make of this: Didn't he write the book after he was out of the game? If so, what lost wages? Defamation of character? You write a book, expect feedback. And the Hall? He's suing in part to get into the Hall of Fame? That's a new one.

... Ortiz, who had a .185 average on May 31, is batting .342 in June. ...

There are so many things wrong with this, it's hard to know where to begin.

Red Sox have 500th consecutive sellout tonight. A record by a long shot (old record was Cleveland at 455).

Something fishy about this story. The area around the stars looks pixelated to me, for starters. And as some of the comments at the site said, how can you fall asleep during a tattooing -- on your face? That doesn't sound right. You ask for a couple near your left eye and don't notice that he's inking your nose, forehead and chin? Hard to believe.
