  1. Can you provide a link to the website Allen? Thanks
  2. Echo the sentiments here regarding this recording. Thoughtful, pretty emotional, beautiful melodies, the music is almost fragile in a way, and obviously wrapped in a deep historic sensibility -- a story told. A joy to listen to. I do look forward to future volumes. This one is so different, much lighter, than the first. While I've always enjoyed Roberts' earlier stuff -- what I've heard anyways (Sticks and Stones, Chicago Project) -- this project, and this release in particular, really elevates her to a whole new level.
  3. Yeesh … Lord only knows what stratosphere he would hit if he covered an actual, serious news event.
  4. Haven't been to Europe in decades, but take David Ayers' advice about being on guard for theft. My sister had an iPad stolen out of her hotel room in Barcelona last year. A money belt might not be a bad idea for carrying passports, wallets, etc., on your person at all times. I guess the best advice is don't take anything with you that you would be upset if it was stolen. That aside, have a wonderful trip and congrats on your 50th. You're a lucky man.
  5. My fave: If you're lost in the wilderness and get bitten by a snake, walk slowly back to your vehicle and get to a hospital within two hours.
  6. Ah, missed this. Hope you had a good one Dan.
  7. Just noticed this. Payment sent. Thanks, James
  8. I was just listening to Indian Summer last evening. Was about to send Chuck a note about what a beautiful recording this is when I spied this thread. So Chuck, thank you. The recording is exquisite. Thanks, James
  9. I just checked and got the message: "Sorry, forums are down." Implying that it's temporary, perhaps?
  10. Signs of a sink hole. ... in one. ...
  11. You're a lucky man. Congrats.
  12. Another paper in my area, just up the road a bit, recently published this piece: "America's Worst Charities" is the result of a yearlong collaboration between the Tampa Bay Times and California-based The Center for Investigative Reporting, the nation's largest and longest serving nonprofit newsroom dedicated to watchdog journalism. How about the Portland Press-Herald's: "The Lobbyist in the Henhouse" a seven-month investigation of a former industrial lobbyist who became commissioner of the state department of environmental protection and basically continued to function as an advocate for the chemical, drug, oil and real estate industries in her new position? Or the Patriot News breaking the Sandusky scandal? I could go on, but I won't. I will say that more and more, investigative reporting is falling under the purview of what I would call advocacy journalism, by such outfits as Mother Jones, TPM, etc. Not necessarily a bad thing.
  13. One of those Boston players -- Bergeron -- was playing with a broken rib, torn cartilage. Unreal. Always kind of thought Chara was a bit overrated (kept hearing best defenseman in the game, blah, blah). The Blackhawks were able to knock him off his game by getting him in close quarters, where that pole he uses for a stick was less ... useful. Wouldn't have minded seeing a Game 7, but good for Chicago for taking it in what Boston fans must think was a colassal meltdown.
  14. Disagree. The mid-sized paper I work for won a Pulitzer for investigative journalism recently. And continues to do similar work. LINK Often, the local daily doing the routine work of chronicling the unglamorous business of government will, through routine work, end up uncovering malfeasance, corruption, etc. Whether or not people find any value in that sort of thing is another question. But perhaps "prevailing wisdom" on this sort of thing shouldn't be greeted so readily with nodding heads.
  15. Thanks fellas. This is a nice surprise! Had a pretty laid back day -- hanging out with dad, chillin' with Bodhi and listening to some music (currently enjoying Cecil Taylor -- "Jumpin Punkins.") My better half's returning to town tomorrow, so hopefully we'll hit the beach in the late afternoon, then a nice dinner. Jeff -- still trying to finneagle a jailbreak to NOLA next weekend. I could use a road trip. Thanks again all. Paps
  16. Miami needs to get better ... Spurs were a much more formidable opponent than I figured they would be prior to the series. But in the end, Miami just had more in the tank when it mattered most. But I come away from this series a big fan of the Spurs. And Pop is awesome. Congrats Heat. Paps
  17. Well done Jeff. Who know what sparks you're lighting now. An inspired educator is a gift. Paps
  18. They forgot to potato salad on that list. (Although I guess it goes without saying) I had some (what turned out to be) nasty potato salad on Saturday night. I'm just coming to now. Damn that potato salad. Paps (burp)
  19. Makes sense to list them on eBay and amazon, where people generally go first when looking for something specific. And don't forget to post a link here, cause curious minds want to know ... Paps
  20. I've been a serial quitter for the past few years, I'm afraid. There's a box of Chantix in my medicine cabinet waiting for my next run at it, which I'm targeting for later this month. It's a tough deal, though, and for me requires a holistic approach that involves changes in lifestyle, as well as changes in habits. All positive changes, but nonetheless fairly sharp changes. (more exercise, different diet, etc.) I have few other vices, other than caffeine. Don't drink, just the occasional glass of wine. And don't do drugs. Although I'd argue that cigarettes are one of the most powerfully addictive drugs there is.
  21. Glad I stopped in here! Congrats all around and looking forward to this one.
  22. And yet most (all?) of the teams are losing money hand over fist. It's fair to say that if Stern and the NBA weren't willing to cross-subsidize these losses it would fold quickly. It is hard to say if the next Commissioner will be quite so willing to continue the same level of support. Yeah, and while I have no reason to doubt that most WNBA franchises are losing money, there's always a little red flag in my mind when sports franchises claim they're losing money. I'm pretty sure there are major league baseball teams that year after year say they're losing money. Yet somehow they continue. Go figure. Maybe NBA owners are content to claim the WNBA losses for some kind of tax credit. But regardless, I'd be surprised if the league folded after this season. Even JC Penny (top of the list) probably has more rope than that. Not much more, mind you.
