  1. Seems we've reached some sort of catharsis.
  2. A new spin on the age old question: "Beatles or Stones?"
  3. Did you guys catch the video of Beckett handing a kid a baseball? Alternately touching and a bit (just a bit) 'double rainbow guy' funny. One commenter: "God help the first girl that breaks up with this kid." Nice moment though, shared with pops, that he'll surely always remember. Good for Beckett, too, a guy who doesn't always come across as all that warm.
  4. Isn't one problem that the average person associates the term 'jazz' with the kind of low-energy music performed by the Kenny G's of the world? Basically background music, in the minds of many folks. Or maybe just as bad, Wynton retooling material that's a half century old. I'd say that a band like Reptet, for instance, that plays a kick-ass brand of music that people can move to in a club, isn't the first thing that pops into most folks' minds when you utter the term 'jazz.' And for those who might respond, "Well, that isn't strictly speaking jazz," there you go.
  5. I'm going to check this out. Thanks The photos on your site (nice site, btw) with the dancers in what looked to be a storefront window were great. And what kind of wild frontier are those frets from?!
  6. Meanwhile, Rays are in the tank, getting crushed night after night. Pretty ugly. Shields served up batting practice for the A's last night -- they were swinging on just about every first pitch he threw in the fourth and nailing it every time. Yeesh. Davis got tagged for five runs in the first today. This six-man rotation thing ain't working out, I don't think.
  7. Noticed a new copy of Mosaic's Okeh/Brunswick Bix Beiderbecke, Frank Trumbauer box up at ebay here. Four days left in auction. One bid so far for $39.99. If the price hangs around that level until the auction nears close, certainly would be worth jumping in.
  8. Hm. You might have better luck listing them individually.
  9. I recall a minor-leaguer had a no-hitter taken away recently when officials reviewed game tape after the game and changed an error to a hit. I think the play was originally recorded as a hit, then the official scorer changed it to an error (during or after the game, I'm not sure), then it was changed back to a hit after the game when officials reviewed the game tape.
  10. Count me among those who, for purely selfish reasons, was hoping they would take a year off.
  11. Another death?! It's starting to look like a funeral home around here (he said, only half-joking). Sigh ... well, RIP to 1/3 of America. Wonder what tomorrow will bring?
  12. I'm not sure I got this the first time it was released.
  13. Kid Ory -- Legendary Kid (good time jazz) Sharkey Bonano 1928 - 1937 (timeless) Mitt Carey & Lee Collins (american music)
  14. What can one say about Norway? The senseless acts of a madman. Unimaginable tragedy for the families. Overwhelmingly sad. No society is safe from this sort of violent extremism? Somalia: Another tragedy borne of political dysfunction? The failure of the developed world to act decisively? But neither is really germane in a thread about the death of an individual. -- which, btw, the assumption is that it was drug-related when that hasn't been determined yet, I don't think. Seems likely, but maybe she had an unrelated medical condition. In other words, maybe it was just "her time."
  15. The media that is now weeping for her also encouraged this celebrity excess. Kids in this sort of situation are expected to live the dangerous, rock'n roll lifestyle in order to be edgy. They all assume they are going to be Keith rather than Brian. The way the media used this woman's unfortunate life to provide copy crosses into another ugly story dominating the news at present. We can blame the media, her handlers, her friends or her family. But ultimately, she's the one who is responsible, not the media. They're just feeding the rest of us the fast food we love. She was basically a kid at 27, and her death is sad. But there are thousands of unknown addicts sleeping under bridges who we collectively couldn't care less about (until they rob us. Then it's a huge problem that needs immediate attention). But when the media turns its attention to those people, we let out a collective yawn and turn the page. And that's the way it is. ... But ... I really enjoyed the clip Dave James posted above.
  16. Tragic, but entirely unsurprising, if true.
  17. No thanks to him. In the 2009 post-season, Teixeira hit .167 in the ALDS, .222 in the ALCS and .136 in the World Series. ... yeah, but his defense
  18. Yeah, shame about that championship, too.
