How did you guys meet your significant other?
AndrewHill replied to trane_fanatic's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I guess I'm one of the very few that met my future wife in a bar. I was a senior in college and was not actively looking for anyone to date as I just recently ended a relationship with a girl that wasn't going anywhere. So as fate would have it, it was actually the best circumstance to meet someone. I'll never forget the moment that our eyes locked; we knew that there was a great potential for a chemisty between us. We introduced ourselves to each other and we couldn't stop talking to each other. I asked for her number and I was nervous that the next day when I was going to ask her for a date that some of the spark would be gone. On the contrary, we ended up on the phone for another two hours and our date that night was fantastic. In November we will be celebrating our tenth year anniversary and we still have such a great relationship. The fact that we are so compatible and our conversations are still exciting and fun makes all the difference. Concerning the on-line dating services, a friend of ours was having terrible luck finding a date and decided to give one of those services (I think it was Match.com) a try. Three years later he and his wife will celebrating their first year anniversary and they are quite a happy couple. -
Are you kidding? They're ahead of Leonard Feather???? When did that happen? I think it's a given that everyone is ahead of Leonard Feather. Apropos the ego and exaggerated credit that mars Orrin's notes and has now been compared to Leonard Feather's. Here's an exchange I had with the latter when he took a dim view of me not mentioning him in notes for a Verve Dinah Washington reissue. I think some of you may have seen these letters a few years back, when I first posted them, and I apologize for the rerun. Was Leonard Feather really that full of himself? Unreal.

Urbie Green Bethlehem East Coast Jazz Volume 6

The Dexter Gordon Bethlehem date is one of two sessions he recorded in the mid-1950s, the other one being Dexter Plays Hot and Cool (Dootone). It's nice, but not essential, at least not to my ears. Here are the details: Daddy Plays the Horn - Bethlehem BCP-36 (original LP catalog number) Recorded in Hollywood, September 18, 1955 Personnel: Dexter Gordon (leader) - tenor saxophone Kenny Drew - piano Leroy Vinnegar - bass Lawrence Marable - drums Tracks: Daddy Plays the Horn Confirmation Darn That Dream Number Four Autumn in New York You Can Depend on Me Thanks. I do have Dexter Blows Hot and Cool and I enjoy it quite a bit. -

Oh, I didn't know that was a pseudonym for Al Cohn! I do dig the 'middle jazz' of the 50's and it doesn't have to be groundbreaking or anything like that. Concerning the fresh Sound, I think I misunderstood what was on that disk. I thought it only had one tune off the Bethlehem, I didn't realize that it had all three albums less one tune. So yes, you're right that would be the better buy. -

Thank you for the replies so far. If I recall, the Urbie Green does not have Al Cohn on it (but honestly I don't recall; a name that big should've stood out). But it is a sort of biggish band, maybe almost a tentet. I remember that Osie Johnson is one of the drummers (there are two). Also, what are anyone's thoughts on the Dex date? (I know that was not the main topic of discussion) -
Ok, so when I was searching for Urbie Green last night, I got side-tracked with the 10 inch Conn series. So I want to seek your esteemed opinion: is this Bethlehem date worth picking up? Its from the now deleted Avenue Jazz series and its new for $10. I guess, I'm also wondering, what are the chances that Shout Factory or anyone (Fresh Sound?) will re-release this date? This particular store also has Dexter Gordon's Daddy Plays the Horn on Avenue Jazz too for $13 new. Should I just grab these and be done with it? Thanks in advance, HG

Like the WCC, the 10inch Conns seemed to have never caught on until it was too late. I think I blinked and they were already gone.

Nevermind. He just started a new topic today. I wonder if we can just simply ask where's someone's been and all of a sudden they'll appear

Looking for a thread on Urbie Green and found this. Voted for Watkins. I own/heard all except the Melle and the Foster/Wallington. As others have said about Watkins, its astonishing to hear someone swing so hard on an unwieldy instrument such as a french horn. I like the tunes, Mobley is in fine form and Watkins is ON. Great disk. Runner up would have to be the Tal Farlow side on the flip side of Howard McGhee. Would really like to hear the Melle set.

Now enjoying a bottle of Great Lakes Christmas Ale from my stash bought during the holiday season. -
This was an interesting tribute, but part II is missing somewhere. I was really excited to see the Cannonball/Miles/Weather Report years. Part III goes right into the Syndicate years.

You should post more often - I've missed your avatar. Real man attitude, they all love me for my body and not for my mind If that's your body, I don't mind. You can post here as much as you want.

Funny as I was reading this I was wondering where's Chewy been? Kinda hard not to miss his posts

A nice refreshing bottle of Killian's Red brewed by the esteemed Coors company. -
Up for air. Just found a copy of the NRG Ensemble's This is Our House on Delmark and its astonishing to listen to the variety of moods this band goes through. Since I only have the Finnish/Swiss Tour to compare, the energy seems to be roughly the same. Some of the tunes are by Hunt, Williams and Ken Vandermark (who I guess filled in after Hal's death). Vandermark here very much reminds me of Brotz. This is, I believe, one of two or three NRG recordings after Hal Russell passed away, but his spirit is certainly felt. It hasn't left the cd changer since I picked it up last week. Anyone else a fan of these post Hal Russell NRG disks?

Forgot to mention a fine sideman date. Greg Cohen's 'Way Low' on DIW.

I don't have a real strong opionion about him one way or another, but usually when I play one of his cd's, its pleasant enough. I did not care for 'Soul on Soul', but I did like the string project on 'Convergence' and I also enjoyed 'Magic Triangle' and 'Leap of Faith.' I can listen to the Tiny Bell Trio material if I'm in the mood for it, which doesn't seem to be all that frequent.

Is that the original cover art? Looks cool.

So what is the story with the masters then? Is Silkheart out of business or something? The only title I have from them is the Roy Campbell Pyramid: Communion.

I voted for Judgment, if I was forced to choose something accessible. Nothing really new to add here, but Blackfire/Judgment/Smokestack really make a nice companion to POD, maybe because there were all recorded mostly around the same time. For more contemporary recordings, I find myself really digging his Palmetto output, especially Dusk. If you can, hunt down But Not Farewell and Eternal Spirit from his second stint with Blue Note.

Yeah, the Ferrer-Djokovic match was a disappointment. I expected a lot more from Ferrer especially since he had a love three lead over Novak. Oh well. In the long run, Djokovic will prove to be more than a handful for Federer which seems more likely with Davyanko's lackluster effort. By and large, Super Saturday has been a big bust. Hopefully tonights women's final will be better.
