  1. Good Q. on whether Larry Young is greazzzzy or not, I don't personally find Larry all that greasy on 'Unity', 'Of Love and Peace', or 'Mother Ship'. He seems to be somewhat looser on 'Into Somethin',' but Sam makes sure that there's still an edge on that disk. Have not heard 'Contrasts' or 'Heaven on Earth' so I cannot comment on those, nor am I all too familiar with his Prestige or Arista material. Needless to say, Larry Young is a badazz and I have enjoyed all of the recordings that I have heard him on, in particular, the ones with Grant Green
  2. Thanks my man.
  3. On a serious note though, I do not know the other cats you've mentioned in this group, although it sounds like a powerful trio. Please educate me
  4. McPhee phan here too
  5. I recently found the Touff at a pretty good price--very nice session! It seems almost the perfect synthesis of Basie swing/looseness with the lightness of the West Coast aesthetic. Highly recommended. Still reach for the Touff and Mulligan/Baker the most. Very, very satisfying disks Although, I just spun the Shank/Cooper disk recently again and my appreciation for this set has increased dramatically. Again, a shame that this series is long dead. I'll chime in, 'Bring back the WCC!'
  6. Not the most comfortable place to sleep though. Did it once, it was a wild party and I slept in the car (don't ask why) and I woke up feeling like crap.
  7. Up. Funny to read the posts from Che like, "why do I listen to Sonny Rollins..." stuff, but I did just recently acquire this 3-disk set 'Live in the World', and it hits these ears just fine. Ware has such a tight unit with Parker/Ship/Dickey/or Ibarra. I also dig his Columbia material, especially 'Go See the World'. Some of my favorite playing from Wm Parker is on that first track 'Mikuro's Blues'. I also have, 'Cryptology', 'Threads', 'Flight of I' and 'Wisdom of Uncertianty', of which I dig Cryptology and Wisdom the most. I'm torn between Whit Dickey and Susie Ibarra though, but I think I have to give the nod to Susie. She's got to be one of the most talented female drummers out there Lastly, I like Ware's sidemen; William Parker, along with Matthew Shipp, are so well-suited for Ware's music. Threads, except for a few tunes, is a letdown. I know there was a thread about this before, but it does not size up to the other records mentioned above. Still, I think its worth having and even if its not Ware's best, its still a fairly enjoyable set.
  8. What? You guys haven't done this yet? I'm a multimillionaire for sneaking tons of money out of these accounts
  9. I think Jack Schantz is teaching at Akron-not sure what he's doing on the recording scene, but I do recall seeing one of his disks at Half Price awhile back.
  10. That's what I've been gathering about Bourdain. I'm really looking forward to the Cleveland episode, as I have never seen a show of his in its entirety.
  11. Nice! I had Paul Ferguson for two of my jazz classes! Ferguson managed to get Lester Bowie to come in and lecture, with horn, for over an hour. What a priceless treat that was. Ferguson was not only a good prof, but a very nice guy. I think I'm going to try to make it out for this one.
  12. Yeah, that Cleveland episode looks like a good one. I caught the episode when he was stuck in Beirut. That was pretty crazy. Yeah, I heard the Beirut one is really, really good...well, that's what the commercial said

  20. Left over from last year, or ready for it to snow in Cleveland? drinking right now: wine from a box... not too bad! My wife and I stock up every year because its seasonal. I still have two cases!
  21. While watching poker, there was a commercial for No Reservations where the show's going to take place in Cleveland-have to check that out, since he's hanging with Harvey Picar.
  22. Sorry about your loss, man. Losing a pet is no picnic. I have a question about your former avatar: was that a BN record? What was on it? I dug that cover quite a bit.
  23. A very good one. Will have to pull my copy out as I haven't played it in years.
