  1. I've read an interview with the owners of the label and they are just a couple of record lovers like the rest of us (but with more of a penchant for the bizarre ).
  2. You're welcome! I hope you have a great birthday! At least it's on a Friday. Edit: To remain true to this thread, I only got 3 right.
  3. Happy Birthday, maren!
  4. I'd vote for that too! As for the bop innovators, the truth is, I don't really enjoy listening to early bop as much as I enjoy hard bop. This is not to say that I don't appreciate or respect what they were doing, but I like the feel of hard bop more.
  5. I totally agree, Bruce! What I've done in recent years with the advent of CD-Rs has been to create Beatles' compilations of certain years (I know - ultimate geekiness). I've got a combo cd of Rubber Soul, Revolver, and the various singles of that vintage. It's great to hear songs like Rain along with songs from Revolver. Sometimes, I've thrown cool bootleg tracks in.
  6. This was a hard choice for me. I ended up going with "Progressive '60s (post bop and hardbop)" but pre-bop was a close second, and classic Blue Note 50's would have been third.
  7. My dad did it for awhile when I was a kid. I don't think he ever made any money doing it, but I do remember that it seemed like everything in our house was made by Amway.
  8. I also have been happy with the Norton releases I have purchased. The vinyl has been fine. I love their Link Wray double cd set. I listen to that often. My favorite Norton release is a record I picked up about 9 years ago called: King Uszniewicz & His Uszniewicztones - Doin' the Woo-Hoo Here's a quote from the allmusic review: "From the staggering group vocals and monotonal saxophone bleating of "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" to the tripping-over-its-own-feet downhill momentum of "At The Hop", Doin' The Woo-Hoo displays all the grace and easy charm of a sailor on shore leave hitting the nearest tavern..." The greatest bowling alley band of Polish descent EVER! This is way more entertaining than the Shaggs.
  9. Thanks for your help, Chuck! I've been looking around this afternoon for Miller discographies and I haven't had any luck. Jazzmoose's question has piqued my interest.
  10. Noj, You should check out the Album of the Week thread for Signifying. I remember there was discussion of his other Argo titles. They seemed really positive. Here's a link to the Signifying - Album of the Week thread My thanks again to Dan Gould for making it all possible. I've really dug that album. :rsmile:
  11. That's a great record. I love to listen to the Beatles ABBEY ROAD and then throw on Booker T's McLEMORE AVENUE after it. I could listen to Steve Cropper all day. Regarding Stax, if you haven't checked out Isaac Hayes, make sure you pick some of his stuff up. I'd start with HOT BUTTERED SOUL or SHAFT. I guess I've been lucky with download speeds. I was able to get good pretty good downloads yesterday and today. Last week, I couldn't get anything.
  12. That's a drag, Noj! I haven't had that problem. My biggest problem is getting all the tracks of an album to download.
  13. It's one of 2 year old's favorite cds. He makes me play it for him all the time. And I don't mind a bit. I'm pretty easy, I've happy with almost every LD cd I've picked up.
  14. That's cool. I thought about doing the same thing since the download speeds are back up. Good luck on getting your whole stash.
  15. Here's a link to Avid's website: Avid records Glenn Miller section
  16. I dunno, something tells me that those two options are pretty much the same... Hey, Kurt turned out fine! Oh wait, he didn't. Oof! That poor little girl.
  17. The English label, Avid, has a bunch of Glenn Miller cds of airchecks, etc... It looks like emusic has them for download. I don't know if you have a membership or not (mine just ended), but check emusic.com, at least you may be able to here samples of the tracks - i don't know where you can find cds from the Avid label. Good luck!
  18. My last download was Art Pepper's THURSDAY NIGHT AT THE VILLAGE VANGUARD. I'm just curious how many of you have cancelled your subscription as a result of their new policies, and if you have, what was your last download? :rsmile:
  19. Do you still have his number?
  20. I just wanted to pay one last visit to "All things emusic" - my subscription ended today. Yesterday, I was scrambling to finish my Art Pepper downloads. It was fun while it lasted.
  21. My coworker was trying to sell a bicycle in the Recycler (which is a newspaper devoted to for sale/wanted ads) here in Southern California. He was contacted by a man from Australia who wanted to send him a cashier's check for $5,000 and have my coworker send him the bike and some change. Well, I heard my coworkers discussing this amongst themselves. He was about to do it. He'd given the guy his contact information and everything. As soon as I heard them talking, I knew it was the 'ol Nigerian cashier's check scam. I told my coworker as soon as I could, but at first he didn't believe. It was only after I sent him an email with links to a bunch of articles that he finally saw the truth. I just wanted to post this to warn you that these scammers are using other means than email and ebay now.
  22. I love that Walt Dickerson record too!
  23. I'm using Nero also on my PC. I burned too many coasters with Easy CD Creator. Noj is right about copying the mp3s to your hard drive. Also, do you have sufficient hard drive space / and have you defragmented your drive lately. I've had a lot of problems when I haven't defragged in a while. One thing that has worked for me is to create a cd image before I actually burn the cd. This is when the cd creation program essentally does all that it needs to do before the actual burning process begins and saves a large file on your hard disc (the actual size of the cd itself). Once you've created the cd image, you can create a cd from the disc image. Good luck!
  24. Don't worry 7/4, no negative impression with me. Family stuff is tough! I feel for you. Those Fender Mexican Standard Teles are a good bang for the buck. If you have a dealer that does 40% off list, you can probably get one for $315. The best price I've seen online is $350, but with no tax and free shipping at musiciansfriend.com - just a thought Plus, they do have alder bodies now. Too bad you're not in California, you could borrow one of mine to get the Tele fix. :rsmile:
  25. You're right, Jim. GEEK ALERT! GEEK ALERT! Back to the geekiness, Jazzmoose, I'm in 100% agreement about Revolver. The US version is terrible. I felt the same way when I first got the British version. "I'm Only Sleeping" and "Doctor Robert" are two of my favorite tracks.
