Thanks Ghost of Miles! I was going to place an order with deepdiscountcd. Now I can do it and relax about it. I hope you like the Charles Tyler. I picked that one up when ZYX reissued the ESP catalog back in the early 90's. I haven't heard it in a long time, but I remember liking it a lot.

Welcome Kenny!

I've never had a chance to listen to Elliot Smith. I'd like to though. How about Brendan Benson? I think he's similar to Elliot Smith. I love his Lapalco album. I'd love to hear any suggestions for where to start?

jmjk, I have a great deal of respect for those who approach the guitar in a creative manner. I think it's a waste of the guitar's potential not to try to make sound paintings. Although I didn't mention it, I've had quite a bit of experience playing in a non-traditional manner. I had a band with a another guitarist and we used to use delays and other effects to make it sound like an entire band. It was a kind of Frippertronics thing. I'm a big fan of Brian Eno and I like a lot of the Krautrock groups like Cluster and Neu. If you've seen the Pink Floyd at Pompeii movie, you could picture what we were doing. Half of our playing was working the effects. I'm also a fan of alternate tunings. I used to use them often, but I found it was a big pain to retune when my band was playing live. In my last band, the other guitarist used alternate tunings all the time. Unfortunately, he never seemed to use the tunings on any songs that came after another. I hated it, I had to actually talk to the audience.

Those really bright headlights on cars...

At least he didn't pepper spray you. I had a co-worker come into the office covering his eyes one day. He said some weasley guy cut him off and after they were exchanging sign language with each other. The weasley guy pulls over. My co-worker gets out of his car and as he's approaching the guy's car, the guy rolls down his window and pepper sprays him. My co-worker waited everyday during the commute hour for the next month for that guy to drive by so he could follow him and kill him. Tip: If pepper sprayed, don't put a cold soda can next to your eyes. Ouch! It's funny, I drive a small pickup truck and people rarely cut me off. When I drive my wife's Saturn (affectionately know as the clown car), I get cut off all the time. People must forget that there's a big guy INSIDE the little car. I hate driving that car. -

Joe, Thanks for the suggestions. Bela Fleck is a monster player. I've got his Bluegrass Sessions cd. I haven't heard much Flecktones stuff. I remember when they first came out, I saw a video of one their songs and I couldn't get into it, so I haven't given their other stuff much of a chance. Thanks for the Metheny suggestions. I'll look into them. I dig Haynes and Holland, so I'll look out for Question and Answer. I've seen Beyond the Missouri in the used bins around here. I'll pick that up.

I recently picked up a Rene Thomas cd. One in the Jazz in Paris series. It was good. I'd like to hear more. Joe G, Thanks for asking. I'm one of those people that seem to dabble in almost every musical style. I'm also a huge bluegrass fan. I even started playing banjo last year. This is my second banjo. I originally bought a cheap one in 1989 and never used it much. My new banjo is a Deering. It is a beautiful instrument. I figured I would buy my last banjo first. I've been practicing and since I was already comfortable fingerpicking, I've progressed quickly. Here are some of my favorite guitarists: Jazz - my tastes are pretty similar to Jim R's. Mostly classic 50's and 60's (Burrell, Montgomery, Green, Farlow). I also like some of Pat Martino's Muse recordings. I've never listened to Pat Metheny, but if you have any suggestions, I'd be happy to hear them. Country/bluegrass: Clarence White, Jimmy Bryant, Joe Maphis, Buck Owens, Don Rich, Roy Nichols. I could go on all day, I'm sure I left out a bunch. Blues: Albert King, Freddie King, BB, Earl Hooker, Peter Green, Hubert Sumlin - Heck, I guess my tastes run in line with Jim R. again. I'd also love more suggestions. Rock: I'll just name bands here. The Beatles, the Byrds, the Grateful Dead (mostly 66-74 period), Moby Grape, Quicksilver Messenger Service, early Pink Floyd. I know that I've left out a bunch. I used to play in bands, but now I just do recording at home. I write my own music and have a 10 track digital recorder that I'm setting up. I wish I could play jazz. I can play some jazz things, but I'm self taught and I get all messed up when you start talking Berklee kind of stuff. The main guitar forum I frequent is the Fender forum. It's expensive to go there because it makes me want to buy more guitars. I'm excited that there are other guitarists here. I look forward to talking about gear and music here. Nice to make your acquaintance!

After all the foolishness at the AAJ board, I've found myself not as excited about it as I was. I'm not going to be run off the board, but it just lost some of the gleam to me. This board is going to become my first stop and then I'll check AAJ. I didn't post a lot at the old BNBB (I had a couple hundred posts), but I was there since '99 and I feel like I know all of you. I really want to use this as a new start and get more involved. Thanks B3-er for the great board!

I just read my post and it sounds like a personal ad. Ooof!

I'm not a jazz guitarist, though I do try sometimes. Mostly I play rock, country, blues. I've been playing for close to 20 years. Usually, I spend a lot of my time at guitar forums. Anyone out there interested in talking guitars?

Have you checked the board settings under the "My Controls" for your account? This software allows the user to set their personal time zone, so all the posts will reflect their timezone. I just found this last night. My guess is that the bulletin board is generating the time based upon the server where it is hosted. This would explain why you have a two minute gap, etc., and the reason for the hour difference is that the software probably has you set up for a time zone far away from where you are. It had me in the time zone for Indonesia or some out of the way place.

I only checked it twice yesterday. I just wanted to see if anyone was wreaking any havoc over there. I figure I'll check in once in a while, to see if there are any new releases or reissues. It was nice while it lasted. To quote the esteemed physician, Dr. McCoy: "He's Dead, Jim"

I was used to $20 + for a long time with Bear Family releases. The first Bear Family cd I purchased was Merle Travis' "Folk Songs of the Hills." I was blown away by the quality of the packaging and discography. They're a great label. I'd still be happy to pay $20 + for their cds (though I'm glad I don't have to).

I too would love a Jutta Hipp Mosaic Select set. I only have the connoisseur with Zoot Sims and a cd-r of Quintet. This would be nice set. Another set I'd like to see would be one of any 10" Blue Notes that weren't released as connoisseurs (if there are any). Just throw them together in a package like the Capital Jazz set.

For whom the bell tolls it tolls for the BNBB

I have a bad feeling about this, too. I wonder if the connoisseur series will continue. -
Jan, JazzPimp posted above about http://www.deepdiscountcd.com. I checked it out and their prices looked good. It looks like it's about $15 per cd. I'm not sure about the shipping and I haven't purchased from them. I've had some good luck with half.com - but the prices I've gotten at half.com seem to be about the same as deepdiscountcd.com. If you find any other good deals, I'd love to hear about them.

Howdy Y'all, I'm almost as hooked on Bear Family as I am on Mosaic. I'm a big fan of Capital Records 50's country albums. I've been trying to pick up the Bear Family releases that cover this interest. So far, my favorite is the Speedy West/Jimmy Bryant "Flaming Guitars" set. I'm sure you guys have heard just about everything, but if you haven't heard Jimmy Bryant, you're missing out.

I miss it too. It's a drag that the membership has splintered. It's too bad we couldn't stick together. Heck, I even miss the fights in the political forum.

My wife is always trying to talk me into moving to Dallas (she used to live there). Here's one more point in her favor! I've really become a fan of Mr. Ivery.

Right now, I'm listening to Johnny Cash's newest album. It's better than I expected. I saw him on Larry King recently and he's gone through hell. I hope he sticks around for a while.

For all you Spinal Tap fans. This is a diary that has been kept by a recording engineer doing a session for a rock band. It is a very funny read. It was originally posted as daily posts in the www.prosoundweb.com forums. It has been inactive for a little while, so if you get hooked reading it, know in advance that it is ongoing. I've been listening to him quite a bit lately. I first heard of him on a thread on the BNBB about players who BN should sign. I think it was Kevin B who mentioned him. Thanks to half.com, I was able to pick up his 3 cds on the Leaning House label a while back. The allmusic site says he's from Dallas. Do you guys know anything about him, or any other cds he has or plays on?
