That's a great idea! Maybe couw could nominate the person who will pick the next album and they can then nominate the next person and so on and so on. We'll make a list in this thread. :rsmile:

Another fun trick is positiong the slide below the neck pickup and picking behind it. It works as a movable bridge and you can get some interesting tones out of it. Great idea! Speaking of slides. Has anyone here messed with lap-steel guitars. About 6 years ago I was playing lap-steel with some experimental musicians. I was running a bunch of effects with it. These instruments are great tools for experiment music and they're pretty cheap. I have an old 50's Rickenbacker steel guitar. I only paid $175 for it. I would really like to learn to play western swing with it too. :rsmile: :rsmile: :rsmile:

It's funny, the second jazz cd I ever bought was Coltrane's Om. I didn't know what to think.

Daydream Nation was a great album. I can totally see it leading someone to modern improv and jazz. When I first saw Nels Cline, he actually reminded me of some Sonic Youth. I have to admit that I'm a big loser and really liked Sonic Youth's Goo. My roomates used to give me grief for that, they called it a sell-out. I loved the stuff on SST Records, the Minutemen, Husker Du, Firehose. I wish I had some of it on cd. All the albums I have by these guys are on vinyl. :rsmile:

Green Dolphin, Thanks for the suggestions. I agree with the Mercury Rev/Flaming Lips suggestion. I've always been a big fan of Mercury Rev's first album. Have you heard the Lip's Zaireeka - 4 cds that you play at the same time on different stereos. I've only been able to play 3 at the same time. They're some interesting people. I too love Joni Mitchell's Hejira. That's my favorite Jaco. I mostly go to Hejira and her albums that came before. My favorite album of hers is her first, Songs to a Seagull. I used to be so in love with her. I've given up on trying to have a "cool" music collection. My friends laugh at some of the stuff I love. Things such as the Incredible String Band. I think I've lost friends over that one.

How about letting the first person who posts after this post gets to pick the cd. I would suggest in the beginning to try to pick something that most of us might have. Maybe a BN title since we came from there. I have emusic, so I have access to most of the OJCs. The person who picks the cd for this week will nominate the person who will pick the cd for next week. We can run the Album of the week from Sunday to Saturday. So the first one will run from Sunday March 23 to Saturday March 29. I think this will be a lot of fun.

Good call! It's just like that. My wife loves Oprah and Dr. Phil. They drive me nuts. I think she has all his books and tapes. It sucks being so sick that you can't even enjoy music. I was the same way a few weeks ago, all I could do was sleep. I hope you feel better soon. Any suggestions for an album to start with?

Nice find, couw! One of my luckiest record finds was the time I walked into a small record store and in their tiny used bin, they had most of Zappa's albums released from 1966-83. The best part is that they were all $2.99 each. I bought every one of them. :rsmile: I was a happy robot! :rsmile:

A couple years ago on the BNBB, I think it was Joe Christmas who started a thread where we'd all listen to the same cd over the course of the week. It was usually a classic jazz album. I remember one album was Monk's Brilliant Corners. I'm not very good at writing reviews and I know there a lot of people here who are. I learned a lot about some great albums when we had this going. Maybe we could do old and new albums, or for those who already have emusic, some of the stuff there? Anyone interested? :rsmile:

That's some obscure stuff. I haven't listened to Bulgarian wedding music, but I do have a couple of those Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares cds. Those harmonies blow me away. I have one Steve Roach cd, The Magnificent Void. I don't know what his other stuff is like. I bought it because someone told me it was like early Tangerine Dream. I'm a big fan of TD's Zeit album. I'm a big fan of krautrock and I used to listen to a lot of Industrial stuff like Nurse With Wound. I'm an old Deadhead, so I'm familiar with some of Mickey Hart's solo stuff. Mostly the stuff from the '70s. I love renaissance/medievel music also. I have some Tallis Scholars and Anonymous 4. I also have a bunch of this style on vinyl. It's so cheap to pick up used. I really love the Hilliard Ensemble stuff that ECM put out around 10 years ago. Thanks for the suggestions! I'd love to hear more. :rsmile:

I listen to almost every type of music. I'm not a big fan of rap or modern rock/pop/country, but I like most of the older styles of music. I find myself going through phases in which I listen to a lot of one style. I then move to another style. I could go from listening to a lot of Indian ragas to listening to Easy Listening. I'm weird that way. I love making compilation cds that jump from the style to style. :rsmile: :rsmile: :rsmile:

I don't know if there are any Pavement fans around here. I wasn't really into them when they were around, but I've been listening to their albums quite a bit lately. I got their DVD "Slow Century" a couple months ago and that has gotten me more interested in what they were doing. I picked up Pig Lib yesterday and I've been enjoying it. It's not as Pavement-like as Malkmus' first solo record. This seems to be more of a band record. It's a little more conventional but I really like it. So far my favorite tracks are 1% of One and Oysters.
