  1. Daydream Nation was a great album. I can totally see it leading someone to modern improv and jazz. When I first saw Nels Cline, he actually reminded me of some Sonic Youth. I have to admit that I'm a big loser and really liked Sonic Youth's Goo. My roomates used to give me grief for that, they called it a sell-out. I loved the stuff on SST Records, the Minutemen, Husker Du, Firehose. I wish I had some of it on cd. All the albums I have by these guys are on vinyl. :rsmile:
  2. Good choice! Do you want me to start a new thread for album of the week or do you? :rsmile:
  3. Green Dolphin, Thanks for the suggestions. I agree with the Mercury Rev/Flaming Lips suggestion. I've always been a big fan of Mercury Rev's first album. Have you heard the Lip's Zaireeka - 4 cds that you play at the same time on different stereos. I've only been able to play 3 at the same time. They're some interesting people. I too love Joni Mitchell's Hejira. That's my favorite Jaco. I mostly go to Hejira and her albums that came before. My favorite album of hers is her first, Songs to a Seagull. I used to be so in love with her. I've given up on trying to have a "cool" music collection. My friends laugh at some of the stuff I love. Things such as the Incredible String Band. I think I've lost friends over that one.
  4. How about letting the first person who posts after this post gets to pick the cd. I would suggest in the beginning to try to pick something that most of us might have. Maybe a BN title since we came from there. I have emusic, so I have access to most of the OJCs. The person who picks the cd for this week will nominate the person who will pick the cd for next week. We can run the Album of the week from Sunday to Saturday. So the first one will run from Sunday March 23 to Saturday March 29. I think this will be a lot of fun.
  5. Good call! It's just like that. My wife loves Oprah and Dr. Phil. They drive me nuts. I think she has all his books and tapes. It sucks being so sick that you can't even enjoy music. I was the same way a few weeks ago, all I could do was sleep. I hope you feel better soon. Any suggestions for an album to start with?
  6. They're probably excited about the double bill of Def Leppard and Bon Jovi that they've got tickets for! Pour some sugar on meeeeeeeeeeeee........!!!
  7. Nice find, couw! One of my luckiest record finds was the time I walked into a small record store and in their tiny used bin, they had most of Zappa's albums released from 1966-83. The best part is that they were all $2.99 each. I bought every one of them. :rsmile: I was a happy robot! :rsmile:
  8. Good point! I remember how my grandparents used to look at me back then. I think they thought I was from space.
  9. Thanks for the suggestions! Noj, that's quite a list. Thanks! JohnS, I see where you're coming from. If I was on a desert island and I could take one type of music. My choice would be jazz. I am a just a music junkie!!!
  10. A couple years ago on the BNBB, I think it was Joe Christmas who started a thread where we'd all listen to the same cd over the course of the week. It was usually a classic jazz album. I remember one album was Monk's Brilliant Corners. I'm not very good at writing reviews and I know there a lot of people here who are. I learned a lot about some great albums when we had this going. Maybe we could do old and new albums, or for those who already have emusic, some of the stuff there? Anyone interested? :rsmile:
  11. Do you have any recommendations for some really good hip-hop? I don't even know where to start. :rsmile:
  12. That's some obscure stuff. I haven't listened to Bulgarian wedding music, but I do have a couple of those Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares cds. Those harmonies blow me away. I have one Steve Roach cd, The Magnificent Void. I don't know what his other stuff is like. I bought it because someone told me it was like early Tangerine Dream. I'm a big fan of TD's Zeit album. I'm a big fan of krautrock and I used to listen to a lot of Industrial stuff like Nurse With Wound. I'm an old Deadhead, so I'm familiar with some of Mickey Hart's solo stuff. Mostly the stuff from the '70s. I love renaissance/medievel music also. I have some Tallis Scholars and Anonymous 4. I also have a bunch of this style on vinyl. It's so cheap to pick up used. I really love the Hilliard Ensemble stuff that ECM put out around 10 years ago. Thanks for the suggestions! I'd love to hear more. :rsmile:
  13. That's great news! I hope he ends up doing it. I'd buy all 4 sets.
  14. They look like they're plugged into the wall outlet.
  15. I listen to almost every type of music. I'm not a big fan of rap or modern rock/pop/country, but I like most of the older styles of music. I find myself going through phases in which I listen to a lot of one style. I then move to another style. I could go from listening to a lot of Indian ragas to listening to Easy Listening. I'm weird that way. I love making compilation cds that jump from the style to style. :rsmile: :rsmile: :rsmile:
  16. I don't know if there are any Pavement fans around here. I wasn't really into them when they were around, but I've been listening to their albums quite a bit lately. I got their DVD "Slow Century" a couple months ago and that has gotten me more interested in what they were doing. I picked up Pig Lib yesterday and I've been enjoying it. It's not as Pavement-like as Malkmus' first solo record. This seems to be more of a band record. It's a little more conventional but I really like it. So far my favorite tracks are 1% of One and Oysters.
  17. Thanks!
  18. Thanks B3-er for being open to it. It just seems that the non-jazz posts get lost in the misc. forum. That's why I suggested it. :rsmile:
  19. Thanks Mule! Great article! :rsmile:
  20. I think I'll take your advice, Soul Stream and Vibes. You've both got me curious about Attica Blues. I'll try to pick it up today.
  21. Lane: Sorry Johnny, I don't have a dime. Johnny: Didn't ask for a dime. Two dollars. Lane: My mom's not home. She had to take my brother to the hospital. My grandma dropped acid this morning, and she was really stressed out. She hijacked a busload full of... penguins. It's sort of a family crisis. Bye!
  22. Remember when people looked like this: :rsmile: It looks like they're wearing animals on their heads.
  23. Howdy all, I know we're here because we love jazz. I also love different music genres too (jazz first, though). I think it would great to have a Music: Non-jazz forum. I know that we have the misc. non politics forum, but I would love to see all the the non-jazz musical discussions in one place. It might also encourage us to talk more about other music that we love. :rsmile: :rsmile:
  24. The very first electric guitar pickup was the Rickenbacker Horseshow pickup back in 1929. Maybe the cover was in response to the look of that pickup. The Rickenbacker pickup wrapped around the strings, making it look like it had a cover. Rickenbacker basses today have a cover over the pickup that emulates this look. They also have a built-in mute on the bridge itself. In the 50's, Fender put covers over the bridge and pickup of Telecasters. They also put a cover over the bridge of the Stratocaster. They did it with both the P-bass and the Jazz basses. My guess is that they did it to make the instrument look cleaner and more stylish. More space-age. :rsmile:
