  9. Cedar Walton's tunes are very consistent in their motor habits.
  10. And do the band members have to pick up their checks at the union hall because the leader won't spring for postage stamps? There was a bandleader in KC like that.
  11. Exactly. In every post-Camarillo Bird performance I can recall, he plays the "composed" version of those four-bar spaces. Pretty much the same every time. It's the superior version to my ears.

  13. Just keep telling yourself: It's only a Hal Leonard book. It's only a Hal Leonard book. It's only a Hal Leonard book. It's only a Hal Leonard book. It's only a Hal Leonard book. It's only a Hal Leonard book.
  14. Up, because the book is finally out. The actual publication date is Jan. 23, 2006. Not recommended -- dry as dust -- but what do I know?
  15. Wasn't it adapted for drums from a lick Ray Crawford played on guitar with Ahmad Jamal? Don't have time to look this up right now, but I think that's mentioned in the Miles/Troupe alleged autobiography. Or maybe it's Philly Joe's interview in Arthur Taylor's book.

    Alaadeen

Paging Chris Burnett ... please pick up the red courtesy phone ... Chris Burnett, AAJ columnist and occasional Big O poster, is the reigning authority on all things Alaadeen. He's also the maintainer of alaadeen.com.

  18. If I said "Pigs and ponies!" here, would any Zappa fans get it? Currently stuck on 6-10-73. No messing around in the first set; this time they mean it from the git-go.

  23. For some reason, Doug Watkins leaps out at me like no other bass player. Maybe because he had about the best intonation of anybody.
  24. "All the materials in the JazzMeBlues projects are available for distribution through the Internet according to license # 341 – AVI 29/04/2004 of the ASDAC and the Internet Society. Under the license terms, ASDAC pays license fees for all the materials subject to the Law of the Republic of Moldova "On Copyright and Related Rights". " Anybody else have the suspicion that Moldovan copyright law is kinda like the Liberian law for licensing oil tankers?
  25. Oh, I get it. Don't ask questions about The Great Respected Dead Masters. And don't ever try to open a new line of honest discussion about one. How useful, to jazz scholars and fans alike.
