  1. Thought you were talking about Stanley Crouch. I was going to mention a set of notes that offended me, but then I realized they were written by someone who's registered on this board, so I'll hold my tongue. (Not Kart, Albertson, Lowe or Sangrey.) Have great respect for this person as a musician; he just oughta get somebody else to write the notes.
  2. Thanks for that, Fasstrack. The most appreciated post of the week.
  3. Snuffy Smith Lowizzey Tater
  4. Sometime, maybe around the late '40s, Jackson went back to Kansas City and stayed there. Died about 1982. I thought I had the obituary clipping somewhere, but can't find it right now. Jackson was also in the Billy Eckstine big band, alongside Dexter and Gene and Leo Parker.
  5. Always appreciated, Mark!
  6. I would have preferred a picture of the other side of the lard bucket, which says "MANTECA."
  7. Wouldn't bother me so if the Concord/Fantasy reissue program wasn't so focused on compilations and RVG'd re-reissues (or re-re-reissues) of the earlier reissues that sold best. I fear that we've already seen everything from their vault that we're ever going to see. Then again, I'm havin' a bad day.
  8. I want to put in a plug here for "Hicks Time," an overlooked solo date on Oliver Lake's Passin' Thru label.
  9. What a shock! Last time he was in Kansas City, I found a seat in the club where I could look over his shoulder. Watching his left hand for two hours was several YEARS worth of lessons. And "After the Morning" is one of my favorite tunes, period. (At least I got the chance to tell him that.)
  10. I haven't thrown taste to the winds for a couple of hours now, so let me add one that's going around: Did you hear about the singer who was arrested on terrorism charges? She kept destroying bridges.
  11. I dream of someday having a collection that is compilation-free.
  12. Patton, Scholz and Dixon were the funkiest rhythm section ever.
  13. More people need to know about David Eyges.
  14. Yes, some blazing Pigpen on there. Also on Download #12, St. Louis 1969. The band is having fun throwing misplaced accents and offbeats at him, and he's throwing them right back.
  15. This date has some of the most relaxed Blue on record. Love that uptempo take on Ronnell Bright's "Sweet Pumpkin."
  16. Warners closed down their jazz department a couple of years back. Told all their artists to take a hike. Even Metheny. P.S., Tom, a certain KC jazz band has also lost its Web domain, and if you type in the name you get porn links much more spectacular than these.
  17. Wynton's just telling the story that Phil Schaap told him, and imitating the way Schaap scats.
  18. Hattie McDaniel Helen Humes Lillie Delk Christian
  19. Rupert Holmes Terry Jacks Rod McKuen
  20. Liberty Ellman's Web page mentions a 2004 gig with Grassella ... in West Orange.
  21. Attended a WONDERFUL show last year: Her quartet with Mark Dresser (extraordinary!), Bobby Previte and a young pianist whose name escapes me. Her concepts translate to live performance very well. There's a more recent album on ArtistShare; haven't heard it.
  22. Well worth getting. Especially beautiful in the symphonies.
  23. Too bad the camera avoids his hands so often. But what's here is great. We have at least one board member who was in his band for a short time.
  24. Carl Nielsen Vagn Holmboe Fartein Valen
  25. Have y'all heard Jeannie Cheatham (I know, she ain't Jimmy) on this George Lewis date?
