  1. There is a common thread in Hank Mobley's Blue Note LP. The Flip. Slide and Dizzy are both on that release as well.
  2. Any history background etc on this free jazz tenor player from the late 60"s? I was tracking down trombonist Marty Cook whom I crossed paths with in Munich in the mid-80s when I found this link. Not for the faint of heart. Interesting. The female non textual voices are effective in this setting. http://www.youtube.c...h?v=36aRIMFY2gc Lonely Woman...different band different LP. Very nice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36aRIMFY2gc

  4. On my copy of Bill Holman's Jazz Erotica LP (HiFi records) the front cover indicates that Frank Rosolino is playing trumpet, while Ed Leddy is on trombone.
  5. I can't resist. Considering the topic and all, it is ironic you typed 'out' instead of 'ought' (line one paragraph 1). I'm just sayin' And this comes from a disfunctional two finger typer, so its all good!

  7. I see you are from d/fw also. Have you been out to hear my quintet that sangrey plays in? Wondered if we crossed paths at a jazz performance somewhere.

  8. A Day in Copenhagen is about my favorite Dexter release, and at the top of my list among Slide dates. Very well written and performed. The band plays well together. Too bad there weren't more dates with this band. Re: Slide's writing and arranging on this LP, it is pretty much a master class on how to voice three horns. He has a knack for making 3 horns sound like more horns. The half step voicings etc. Brilliance!
  9. I guess this could go under 'great finds' but I will mention it here only. I was in Salvation Army today looking among the few LPs for sale, and voila, this LP was in the bin. I had no idea it was so highly sought after as a cult album. Gatefold copy no stains on jacket perse. Vinyl appears to be unplayed. Stamp on the cover of jacket indicating promo copy only. Thanks Jim....of course I called you after walking out of the store. And now I know the rest of the story. I asked Jim if he knew how many releases were produced on Ahmad's label. Anyone know? Interesting. First one I ever saw.
  10. When I want to hear country,. I dig out my Ernest Tubb, my Marty Robbins. Don Williams, Dwight Yoakum and a few others. This new stuff is just cookie cutter, formulaic. what works before will work now shit. And most of the hits are all written by the same selct few. And a lot of the time, the band members are interchangeable on the hit CDs...same cats working with different big names. Boring
  11. Interesting interview http://www.cnn.com/video/?hpt=hp_c3#/video/showbiz/2012/08/09/orig-red-chair-d-l-hughley.cnn
  12. I picked up a few low priced sides the other day at Goodwill. Among them is this '72 release by Les McCann "Invitation to Openness" (Atlantic) I'd be the last person here to say I am an expert or even conversant when it comes to McCann. I honestly haven't checked out that much of his music, aside from the oaccasional release with Eddie Harris. But when I sat down and listened to this, I started to get the idea that there is a pretty evident iMiles influence. At times (at least on side A 'the lovers') it reminded me of On the Corner or maybe Bitches Brew. I can't really pin it down specifically, but that was my impression. Feedback?
  13. Sorry to clutter things up in here, but this is worth it. http://www.ina.fr/art-et-culture/arts-du-spectacle/video/CPA81052890/sonny-rollins.fr.html
  14. http://www.ina.fr/vi...utances.fr.html I wish that the performance was uninterrupted. Too much talking, but at least you get to hear Archie speaking French! This site is worth exploring. There is also a rare clip of a young JJ Johnson in trio, playing Like Someone in Love. edit....is that Ted Curson?
  15. Technically this shouldn't be under vinyl frontier but what the hell. I was in Sherman Texas yesterday for a gig. I drove up early so I could hit some pawn shops. One never knows what you'll find. Not much in the way of pro horns or guitars, but I did see that they had several reel to reel tapes (boxed) and most were commercial releases. I found a Bennie Green (tbn) quintet with Sonny Clark, Jimmy Forrest, George Tucker, ALfred Deares (drums) and Joseph Gorgas (bongos).. Released on Stereo Time. Also picked up an interesting R to R tape entitled Quiet Jazz. Various artists. Released by Realistic (radio shack) "47 hits, not loud, not soft, just great" "Combine some of America's top jazz musicians-----add a top notch musical repertoire, and the result is this really great 3 hour tape. Artists featured here are: Pete Jolly, Bob Freeman, Warren Baker, The Art Pepper Quartet, Oscar Moore, Charlie Barnett and Leroy Vinnegar" I have a pair of R to R players, and this will give me the impetus to get at least one of the serviced. I can't wait to go old school and sit listening to a 3 hour tape of "quiet jazz"! Both tapes look to be in pretty good shape if anyone is wondering. At $2.50 each, I had to take the chance. The boxes alone were worth the price of admission.
  16. I can't believe I sat here and watched this in its entirety. Bizarre, but the soundtrack was mesmorizing.
  17. that's the one I really want to hear! too damn expensive!!! and no turntable. sigh! cool beans!!!! This is available on itunes according to Wolfgang http://itunes.apple.com/de/album/featuring-larry-coryell-buster/id373819207

  20. It is hard for to me imagine Alphonse Mouzon with Chet Baker!
  21. DId anyone see the cable show "Accidental Fortune" last night? I don't recall the station that carries that series. Good stuff. Anyway, this episode had a lady on whose father used to be the pilot for Dylan, Peter Paul and Mary, et al. For over 40 years she has had in her possession an old (mint) sunburst Fender Strat. Her father said it was left on the plane after he flew back from the Newport Folk Festival in '65....the year that Dylan went electric and freaked everyone out, esp. Pete Seeger. lol At any rate, inside the case there were also some lyric worksheets, etc. She contacted the producers of the series and they took up the challenge to see if they could prove if that guitar was THE guitar that Dylan played that night. Long story short they did prove that it was the guitar! Amazing. The women had contacted Dylan's lawyers after so many years had past. Her dad had also tried to rach Dylan to no avail. Apparently he didn't care to retrieve the Strat. Maybe the experienc eof being booed so heartily affected him who knows. The appraisers said that the guitar alone would most likely bring close to $500K at auction. And the lyric work sheets (in his handwriting and his typed words too) would fetch around $20-30K. Amazing. By the way, the guitar was spotless. Mint as could be. Made in 1964. Correction: the program was "History Detectives" PBS. http://www.firstcoastnews.com/life/entertainment/article/264845/19/Has-Bob-Dylans-guitar-been-found And Dylan's camp claims he has the guitar. Who knows. Interesting story.
