  1. Eric Dolphy, indeed. Hearing him on Coltrane's Village Vanguard recordings was my introduction to the instrument (as well as Dolphy himself). I love the sound he gets out of that thing... Nothing else quite like it. Have you heard his solo rendition of "God Bless The Child"? Stunning...
  2. Just wanted to chime in here and say that I picked up both of these sets last week and they've since been in constant rotation. Wonderful stuff... Very glad to have them!
  3. Ornette Coleman - 'The Complete Science Fiction Sessions' (2CD) for about $12.
  4. I imagine there may be a few Galaxie 500 fans on this board... If you're not yet aware, there's a 2-DVD set being put out next month by Plexifilm that looks mighty good. Here are the details from a promotional email I received: --------------------------------------------------------------------- Galaxie 500 Don't Let Our Youth Go To Waste - 2xDVD Set Pre-order now and you will receive a FREE limited edition yellow-vinyl 7" with your order. The 7" is only available if you pre-order the DVD here. You will also get your copy early. If you place your order by Friday, June 18th at 3pm, your copy will ship that day. The official street date is June 29th. DON'T LET OUR YOUTH GO TO WASTE is a comprehensive visual document spanning the history of GALAXIE 500. A compendium of all their music videos, a rare TV appearance, and an archive of over 40 songs performed live, this 2-DVD set includes a performance of an unreleased original song "Buzz in My Head" and a live version of Jonathan Richman's "Back in Your Life," both of which were never recorded or released in any other form. From fan footage to professionally-produced segments, the concerts have been compiled from over 20 hours of performances, curated by the band to best represent their brief but illustrious career. The deluxe booklet contains photos and a new interview with all three members, Dean Wareham, Damon Krukowski and Naomi Yang conducted by Yo La Tengo's James McNew. 5. See this thread for your answer. Thanks Brad!

  7. Weston. Yep, all analog.
  8. Anyone heard this yet? I've been listening to it the past couple of weeks and for the most part have really been enjoying it. It has been incredibly hyped (and with good reason...the first Mission of Burma album in 20+ years!), and I had my doubts as to whether it would live up to all of it, but...I think I can honestly say that it almost does. That opening track ("The Setup") is such a killer... If you don't have this yet and are planning to get it, be sure to pick up a vinyl copy. All-analog 180 gram, and with an extra track to boot.
  9. Thanks for sharing that great bit of news, ghost!
  10. I might have to pick up a few of these myself. I've seen Fugazi twice...once in '94 and once in...'96, maybe? It'd be great to have copies of those shows...especially the one from '94, since that was my first show EVER! Memories, memories...
  11. Here's what Sara Lund had to say about the 'Live In London' record: "BBC owns the rights so no one else can put them out. Unless of course, some naughty person from Texas puts it out as a bootleg and calls it UNWOUND LIVE IN LONDON. But I can't believe that would ever happen..." I have still yet to hear the Replikants myself. Nor have I gotten around to getting the singles collection. I have the majority of that material on vinyl - though I'd like to eventually get the CD to have it all in one place. Regarding the demo - I actually had a copy of that at one time. Downloaded it during the early days of Napster, but have since lost it...and been unable to find a source for a replacement. That "long rumoured live album" would be most welcome! Have you seen this website? While not very current, it's still got loads of good information... http://unwound.livid.com/
  12. They're one of those bands that I've always meant to give a serious listen to, but...still haven't. Anyone care to recommend a starting point?
  13. Anyone using ME should spend some time over at this website... http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winme I've had this OS on a machine at work for the last couple of years. This website helped TREMENDOUSLY.
  14. The Atlantic box and the Village Vanguard box.
  15. For the last 4 years, I have been doing purchasing for a hydraulic/industrial hose and fitting shop. Ho-hum... On Monday, I will begin my new career with the Houston Fire Dept. I'll be attending EMT courses for the first 3 months and then working on an ambulance for the next 4-5 months as a "civilian trainee". After that, I'll be going to fire school for another 4 months. Wish me luck, everyone!
  16. That 'Live In London' record does indeed consist of their Peel Sessions set, and it is a KILLER. Get it while you still can. I bought it a couple of years ago when it was released (less than legitimately, I'm sure) by a label here in Texas. It's since been made available again as an import, I believe. If you like "Side Effects of Being Tired", the version of that song on this record will literally knock ya down - it's incredible. THOSE DRUMS!!!
  17. Well, I ordered 5 early vinyl OJC's direct from Fantasy. They arrived here today (very quick shipping), but...3 out of the 5 that I ordered are apparently no longer available: Pepper Adams '10 to 4 at the 5 Spot', Eric Dolphy 'Out There' and Lee Konitz 'Duets'. The letter I received with the order states that these may possibly be temporarily out of stock or no longer available. Ummm, okay... Since the majority of these have been sitting on their shelves for over 15 years now, I'm going to assume that if they're not presently available, they ain't gonna be. Anyone else experience this? Is this a common occurrence when ordering these?
  18. Not meaning to steer this completely off topic, but...it's not everyday that I find another Unwound fan. I took a while for me to get into 'Leaves...', too. Some of the songs grabbed me immediately ("December", "Demons Sing Love Songs", "October All Over") while others took longer...and some still haven't. Overall, though, it's a very impressive piece of work. The album that I still haven't managed to wrap my ears around, so to speak, is 'Challenge For a Civilized Society'. There's a couple of songs I really like ("Sonata For Loudspeakers", the instrumental track, comes to mind) but overall...well, it's not a bad record - as far as I'm concerned, there's no such thing as a bad Unwound record...but, it's the one that I've played the least. By a wiiiiiiiiide margin. The one that I've played the most? A toss up between 'New Plastic Ideas' and 'The Future of What'. What an incredible band they were...
  19. Got my copy of 'All Music' in the mail today; listening as I type. Great stuff... And yes, some mighty fine liner notes!
  20. I've only been able to compare the K2 version and previous version of "Plays Duke Ellington" while at work and fairly superficially. The K2 had a bit more bass and was a tad clearer, but the difference wasn't revelatory -- I always thought the older version was one of Monk's better sounding Riversides, anyway (I'd love to hear a K2 version of "5 by Monk by 5"). If I had a long list of CDs on my wishlist and already owned the OJC of "Plays...", I might hold off on getting it for awhile. The difference between the new vs. previous versions of Evans' "New Jazz Conceptions" was much, much more impressive. Thanks for the info!
  21. I've been contemplating getting that Monk as a vinyl OJC, seeing as how there are no bonus tracks on the CD. Would be interested in hearing how the K2 compares...
  22. I'm just going to pretend I didn't see this post... ...seeing as how they're in Austin tonight, that probably means that they'll be here in Houston tomorrow...and I can't make it due to prior obligations. Saw them in '96 w/ Unwound (one of my favorite bands EVER, if I might add). Incredible show... I remember them opening with "Teenage Riot" and ending with an amazing 20+ minute version of "The Diamond Sea". I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Please let us know how it went! I'll continue to ignore this post until after their appearance in Houston tomorrow...
  23. So... I'm gathering from this thread that there is not a definitive list of OJC vinyl that was mastered from a digital source. However, from your collective personal experience, is there a general concensus of opinion regarding certain OJC vinyl to avoid (for whatever reason)?
  24. *Lee Konitz (as, ts), Jimmy Rowles (piano), Leroy Vinnegar (bass), Shelly Manne (drums).
