Anyone purchased any of these titles from BMG? So far, I've only bought two from them - Gerry Mulligan 'Live at the Village Vanguard' and Archie Shepp - 'Attica Blues'. The Mulligan was packaged in a mini-LP sleeve, the Shepp was packaged in a standard jewel case. This was originally released in a digipack, was it not? I'm wondering how many of these BMG have repackaged in standard jewel cases... Anyone know? [Forgot to mention that I also picked up Wes Montgomery 'Willow Weep For Me' - this one was in its original packaging.]

Great idea for a thread, Dues. Some excellent suggestions, as well. I've got the Blue Note Covers books which are great. I'll have to check out some of the others you suggested. One that you left out was 'The Blue Note Years: The Jazz Photography of Francis Wolff'. This hardback book can very often be found used from $20-$30. Absolutely essential, IMO! And absolutely stunning...

I bought a batch of 6 Verve 'Mini LP' discs from them recently. Took about a week before I received an email from them notifying me that the discs had shipped. Not bad, but slower than what I'm used to when dealing with the usual online sources. At $8 a piece, however - very hard to pass up. I would (and probably will) buy from them again.

Congrats on snagging yourself a copy of this set, Conn! -
Don't have the Nina Simone, but I do have the Clifford Brown and Grant Green. These are both excellent sets. The Brown is essential, IMO. Especially at such a good price. The Green is a great set as well...unless, ofcourse, you already have most of the albums the songs are pulled from. Even if you do, I'd still say go for it at the price BMG are selling it for. Especially if you can hold out for the next sale where shipping and handling isn't applied to box sets (like they had a couple of months ago). I got these sets so cheap I almost felt like I was stealing them!

Dave Brubeck - 'For All Time'
street singer replied to street singer's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Did a little research to answer my own question and here's what I came up with... 'For All Time' -
Anyone have any info regarding the new Brubeck box coming out next month? Here's what Columbia/Legacy have to say about it: More than any other improvising artist during the past 45 years, the pianist / composer/ bandleader Dave Brubeck (b. 1920) has expanded the rhythmic horizons for the general public, essaying with ever-increasing assurance time signatures like 5/4, 7/4 and even 13/4 while creating a body of work that is notable for its consistent levels of melodic content and harmonic invention. Recorded between 1959 and 1965, this five-disc set captures the Brubeck quartet featuring the floating alto saxophone of Paul Desmond (composer of the million-selling "Take Five"), at the peak of their powers. In addition to such Brubeck signatures as "It's a Raggy Waltz," "Blue Rondo a la Turk," "Unsquare Dance" and, course, "Take Five," FOR ALL TIME's repertoire also presents an improvisation from one of Dave's liturgical pieces, a variation of the folk song "Frankie and Johnny," and Brubeck's work for quartet and 45-piece orchestra, "Elementals." It doesn't give a track listing for this set. Judging by the title, one would assume that this box will include all of his 'Time' albums. Can anyone confirm this?

Don't forget to factor in the "Music Points" you get if you were to purchase this from BMG. Each point is worth $1. They add up after a while...

Just a heads up to anyone who may not have picked this one up yet - it's still available from CyberMusicSurplus and the price has been cut even more. I just ordered it tonight for $6.80 (including shipping)!

Was listening to Dolphy's rendition of Monk's "Epistrophy" on the 'Last Date' album and am now wondering... Did these two ever play together? Record together? If so, I'm not aware of anything. It would be fascinating to hear, that's for sure... Anyone know?

John Coltrane And Johnny Hartman
street singer replied to Soulstation1's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I'm in agreement with Lon on this one. It's hard for me to get into this one due to Hartman's vocals. I just don't dig that vocal style too much, in general, really... Coltrane plays beautifully, however. -

Who's the uncredited flute player on "Hasaan's Dream"?

I don't believe CDUniverse offer free shipping, do they? Not usually, anyway... I think their shipping charges are based on the number of discs ordered, ranging from $2.99-$6.99.
-
I agree with you completely on the price of these things. However, if you can get them used for a good price, that's a different story. I own a few JRVGs/TOCJs but have never paid full price for them. The most I've ever paid has been $15.

The following are now available for pre-order for $8.39 through CDUniverse: Cecil Taylor - Conquistador Stanley Turrentine - Never Let Me Go Sonny Rollins - Newk's Time Jimmy Smith - Prayer Meetin' Jimmy Smith - Rockin' the Boat Horace Silver - The Cape Verdean Blues As if you all needed something else to purchase next month...
