  1. Found this in the little store here in Green Bay (!) SMOKES! diggin' it - go buy it Anyone get the Mel Brown or any other Verve reissues on the 9th? I ordered the Lateef along w/ the Coleman. Still waiting for both to arrive from CD Universe (maybe today?), looking forward to them very much.
  2. "RCM"? Please explain. Obviously, I'm fairly new to the world of vinyl...
  3. Just stumbled upon this thread... Did anyone ever get any more information regarding these recent Blue Note reissues? (ie: where they come from (source), who's putting them out, why there hasn't been much hype about them, etc)
  4. I've picked up quite a few of these recently and am actually very happy with them. I mean, it's music that I would've otherwise paid twice as much (or more) to acquire....what's there to complain about?! Yeah, the covers are blue...but you can print your own full-color covers on any decent printer (which is what I did). A lot of these have TOCJ markings on the inserts. I don't know if it's been definitively confirmed that they are indeed TOCJ remasters, but according to many who are more familiar with that series than I am, they certainly sound like TOCJ's. The ones w/o TOCJ markings appear to be the 80's Ron McMasters versions. Bottom line: it's music at a good price that you would otherwise have to pay quite a bit more for. I say give 'em a shot...
  5. Thanks for the comments, everyone. So, the general opinon of those who have responded seems to be that these are "alright", at best. Nothing spectacular. However, the same could be said about the majority of OJC CD's. So... Do you see any reason to buy these over the CD's? Granted, they are a few bucks cheaper...and you get the full size cover artwork (ofcourse, with a lot of these covers, that's not necessarily a good thing). However, if you're going to buy a record that's mastered from a digital source...well, that kind of defeats the purpose of acquiring the music on vinyl, don't you think? Then again... I sure do like watching those shiny black discs spin around and around. Anyone else here have an opinon of these? Still would like to hear how these compare to the K2 remasters.
  6. I'm looking for some opinions on the OJC vinyl reissues. The recent thread on Fantasy being up for sale really got my attention, and as I was perusing through their catalog I noticed the large amount of vinyl still available from them. I just ordered a few of these yesterday and am ready to pick up a great many more...but, I seem to recall some negative opinions some people had about these reissues. Seems that there was some controversy regarding the possibility of digital source material for some of these - any truth to that? If so, have the ones that were mastered from digital sources been identified? Most importantly, though: In general, how do these things sound? Are they better sounding than their standard OJC CD counterparts? How do they compare to the newer K2 remastered CDs? Like I said, I'm ready to put down some change for quite a few of these, and since I value the opinions of all of you here so much, I figured I'd check here first before venturing out into "the wild" (ie: Audio Asylum, et al). Many thanks!
  7. Mike, Agreed. I started this thread 'cause I thought it was a cool cover and that others might be interested in knowing it was out there. No "how dare they!" sentiments from me. They're also a really great band, by the way.
  8. This company sells what appear to be high quality vinyl reissues of classic albums. I've been eyeing the 3 Nick Drake albums lately and am veeeerrrrry, very tempted. Has anyone heard the reissues put out by this company? Are they worth picking up? If so, is there a good source for these here in the US? Thanks!
  9. Couldn't find the "jazz cover rip offs" thread, so...
  10. Thanks ghost! I had about given up on ever finding this at a reasonable price. If you hadn't posted this bit of information, I'm sure I would've missed out on this one again... Just ordered myself a copy. THANKS!!!
  11. Happy Birthday, Organissimo!!! I'm very glad to have discovered this community after the demise of the BNBB. After participating in online communities like this for many years, I can honestly say that, without question, this is the best one I've ever been a part of. The people and the atmosphere are what make it so unique... Thanks very much to the Organissimo bandmates for making all this available and to all of you fine folks out there that make this such a great place to visit.
  12. Dr. J, See this thread for all the info regarding this set.
  13. To anyone who has heard the 1980 vinyl pressing of Mobley's 'Third Season' - how does the sound quality on this compare to the Connoisseur CD version? I've notived that the vinyl can typically be found cheaper than the CD and am wondering what the reason for this might be. Are there any bonus tracks on the CD? Thanks!
  14. Just checked BMG and they do not have the Wilkerson set. Did they have this at one time?
  15. Some (possibly all?) of that Half Note material was recently circulated in a '1965-1968' Coltrane tree. AMAZING stuff, to say the least. The sound quality is fairly decent for this type of material - however, will be nice to have a legit release of this with (hopefully) even better sound. Looking forward to it! Any idea whether this will be a single or multi-disc release?
  16. shrugs, If you would, please elaborate on the methods you referred to in your previous post.
  17. that last Blue disc is prolly better off sealed. Aw, c'mon... There's some great stuff on that last disc!
  18. How about the ones that Red Trumpet sell? Red Trumpet Do a search for Mini LP sleeves in the Accessories section.
  19. I hear ya, jazzdog. Can't open enough fast enough...
  20. My copy arrived a few days ago. Have listened to it a few times and enjoy it very much. This is something that I probably wouldn't have picked up had it not been recommended elsewhere on this board. Happy to pass along the word to you guys... Enjoy!
  21. I've always enjoyed 'Basie at Newport' as well. That was actually my introduction to Lester Young, if I recall correctly...
  22. I've always found Bud Powell's version especialy moving and a little disturbing. Yes. Powell's version is quite haunting and one of the better later Verve sides IMO. The only Powell on Verve that I have are 'Jazz Giant' and 'Best Of Bud Powell On Verve', which contains this version of "It Never Entered My Mind". I'll have to give this one a listen... Thanks for the suggestion!
  23. I was just listening to that version yesterday and thinking how nice it is. I believe my preference for the one on 'Vol. 1' is mostly for sentimental reasons... There used to be a jazz radio program on Saturday evenings here in Houston called 'Milestones'. I'd listen every week from 6-9 PM. Being new to jazz at the time, this program was something of a revelation for me. It was all new to me and I was completely fascinated by everything I was hearing. All good things must come to an end, however...and the program is no more. (And, ofcourse, there has been nothing to come along and take its place since its demise...) The last song that was played before the program went off the air was that version of 'It Never Entered My Mind' from 'Vol. 1'. I guess it's just sort of stuck with me since then... Aw, shucks... [sniff, sniff]
  24. That guy? He can't play!!! Ha... I thought that would get it stirred up. Seriously, though. 'It Never Entered My Mind' from Miles' 'Vol. 1' on Blue Note... Listen to that and tell me you're not moved!
  25. 'Loverman'. Aw, yeah...LOVE this one!!! Billie did the definitive version of this one for me...and ofcourse a fellow named Charlie Parker did a passable version of it as well. But, man...that version on J.J. Johnson's 'The Eminent: Vol. 1' just floors me!
