Yo La Tengo 'Today Is The Day!' EP Cover
street singer replied to street singer's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Mike, Agreed. I started this thread 'cause I thought it was a cool cover and that others might be interested in knowing it was out there. No "how dare they!" sentiments from me. They're also a really great band, by the way. -
This company sells what appear to be high quality vinyl reissues of classic albums. I've been eyeing the 3 Nick Drake albums lately and am veeeerrrrry, very tempted. Has anyone heard the reissues put out by this company? Are they worth picking up? If so, is there a good source for these here in the US? Thanks!

Couldn't find the "jazz cover rip offs" thread, so...

Thanks ghost! I had about given up on ever finding this at a reasonable price. If you hadn't posted this bit of information, I'm sure I would've missed out on this one again... Just ordered myself a copy. THANKS!!!

Happy Birthday, Organissimo!!! I'm very glad to have discovered this community after the demise of the BNBB. After participating in online communities like this for many years, I can honestly say that, without question, this is the best one I've ever been a part of. The people and the atmosphere are what make it so unique... Thanks very much to the Organissimo bandmates for making all this available and to all of you fine folks out there that make this such a great place to visit.

To anyone who has heard the 1980 vinyl pressing of Mobley's 'Third Season' - how does the sound quality on this compare to the Connoisseur CD version? I've notived that the vinyl can typically be found cheaper than the CD and am wondering what the reason for this might be. Are there any bonus tracks on the CD? Thanks!

Just checked BMG and they do not have the Wilkerson set. Did they have this at one time?

Alice Coltrane, John Coltrane new releases
street singer replied to robert h.'s topic in New Releases
Some (possibly all?) of that Half Note material was recently circulated in a '1965-1968' Coltrane tree. AMAZING stuff, to say the least. The sound quality is fairly decent for this type of material - however, will be nice to have a legit release of this with (hopefully) even better sound. Looking forward to it! Any idea whether this will be a single or multi-disc release? -
shrugs, If you would, please elaborate on the methods you referred to in your previous post.

Looking for vinyl sleeves for mini-LPs
street singer replied to AmirBagachelles's topic in Offering and Looking For...
How about the ones that Red Trumpet sell? Red Trumpet Do a search for Mini LP sleeves in the Accessories section. -
My copy arrived a few days ago. Have listened to it a few times and enjoy it very much. This is something that I probably wouldn't have picked up had it not been recommended elsewhere on this board. Happy to pass along the word to you guys... Enjoy!

I've always enjoyed 'Basie at Newport' as well. That was actually my introduction to Lester Young, if I recall correctly...

Standards you DON'T get sick of
street singer replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I've always found Bud Powell's version especialy moving and a little disturbing. Yes. Powell's version is quite haunting and one of the better later Verve sides IMO. The only Powell on Verve that I have are 'Jazz Giant' and 'Best Of Bud Powell On Verve', which contains this version of "It Never Entered My Mind". I'll have to give this one a listen... Thanks for the suggestion! -

I was just listening to that version yesterday and thinking how nice it is. I believe my preference for the one on 'Vol. 1' is mostly for sentimental reasons... There used to be a jazz radio program on Saturday evenings here in Houston called 'Milestones'. I'd listen every week from 6-9 PM. Being new to jazz at the time, this program was something of a revelation for me. It was all new to me and I was completely fascinated by everything I was hearing. All good things must come to an end, however...and the program is no more. (And, ofcourse, there has been nothing to come along and take its place since its demise...) The last song that was played before the program went off the air was that version of 'It Never Entered My Mind' from 'Vol. 1'. I guess it's just sort of stuck with me since then... Aw, shucks... [sniff, sniff] -

That guy? He can't play!!! Ha... I thought that would get it stirred up. Seriously, though. 'It Never Entered My Mind' from Miles' 'Vol. 1' on Blue Note... Listen to that and tell me you're not moved! -

'Loverman'. Aw, yeah...LOVE this one!!! Billie did the definitive version of this one for me...and ofcourse a fellow named Charlie Parker did a passable version of it as well. But, man...that version on J.J. Johnson's 'The Eminent: Vol. 1' just floors me! -

'It Never Entered My Mind' is another good one. Especially when Miles played it... -

I really dig the version of this on Grant Green's 'Grantstand'. -
Just ordered my first 2 Selects...
street singer replied to riverrat's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The first of many, to be sure... Don't have the Weston, so I can't comment on that one. The Jones set I do have and it's an absolute marvel. You're sure to enjoy it! -
I don't know about the LP reproduction series, but I got a VME from BMG in a jewel case, instead of the usual digipack. I've never been a fan of digipacks, but I felt like I'd somehow been robbed. A VME in a jewel case, really? Hmm... I wonder why they repackage some and not others. Very odd...

When you make a CD-R copy, you're in essence putting another copy of the album into circulation - a copy that the artist receives no compensation for. Whereas with buying used, you're not introducing another copy of the album into the market. The existing copy, for which the artist has already been compensated for, is simply exchanging hands. Therein, to me, lies the difference.
-
Well, the obvious difference here being that if you buy a used CD, you're still getting "the real thing", but at half the cost (or less). A CD-R is just a CD-R...a copy. You still get the music, ofcourse, but...it's just not the same.
