  1. 'It Never Entered My Mind' is another good one. Especially when Miles played it...
  2. I really dig the version of this on Grant Green's 'Grantstand'.
  3. The first of many, to be sure... Don't have the Weston, so I can't comment on that one. The Jones set I do have and it's an absolute marvel. You're sure to enjoy it!
  4. I don't know about the LP reproduction series, but I got a VME from BMG in a jewel case, instead of the usual digipack. I've never been a fan of digipacks, but I felt like I'd somehow been robbed. A VME in a jewel case, really? Hmm... I wonder why they repackage some and not others. Very odd...
  5. When you make a CD-R copy, you're in essence putting another copy of the album into circulation - a copy that the artist receives no compensation for. Whereas with buying used, you're not introducing another copy of the album into the market. The existing copy, for which the artist has already been compensated for, is simply exchanging hands. Therein, to me, lies the difference.
  6. Well, the obvious difference here being that if you buy a used CD, you're still getting "the real thing", but at half the cost (or less). A CD-R is just a CD-R...a copy. You still get the music, ofcourse, but...it's just not the same.
  7. Anyone purchased any of these titles from BMG? So far, I've only bought two from them - Gerry Mulligan 'Live at the Village Vanguard' and Archie Shepp - 'Attica Blues'. The Mulligan was packaged in a mini-LP sleeve, the Shepp was packaged in a standard jewel case. This was originally released in a digipack, was it not? I'm wondering how many of these BMG have repackaged in standard jewel cases... Anyone know? [Forgot to mention that I also picked up Wes Montgomery 'Willow Weep For Me' - this one was in its original packaging.]
  8. That softcover has completely different content than the hardcover, correct?
  9. Great idea for a thread, Dues. Some excellent suggestions, as well. I've got the Blue Note Covers books which are great. I'll have to check out some of the others you suggested. One that you left out was 'The Blue Note Years: The Jazz Photography of Francis Wolff'. This hardback book can very often be found used from $20-$30. Absolutely essential, IMO! And absolutely stunning...
  10. I bought a batch of 6 Verve 'Mini LP' discs from them recently. Took about a week before I received an email from them notifying me that the discs had shipped. Not bad, but slower than what I'm used to when dealing with the usual online sources. At $8 a piece, however - very hard to pass up. I would (and probably will) buy from them again.
  11. Carmell Jones Mosaic Select. Before that, Blue Mitchell.
  12. Grachan Moncur III Select late last year. My first "full-blown" Mosaic? Hank Mobley. Received from my girlfriend for Chrismas last year. Yeah, I'm a newbie..... My life will never be the same!
  13. Congrats on snagging yourself a copy of this set, Conn!
  14. Don't have the Nina Simone, but I do have the Clifford Brown and Grant Green. These are both excellent sets. The Brown is essential, IMO. Especially at such a good price. The Green is a great set as well...unless, ofcourse, you already have most of the albums the songs are pulled from. Even if you do, I'd still say go for it at the price BMG are selling it for. Especially if you can hold out for the next sale where shipping and handling isn't applied to box sets (like they had a couple of months ago). I got these sets so cheap I almost felt like I was stealing them!
  15. Where can this version of "Round Midnight" be found?
  16. Did a little research to answer my own question and here's what I came up with... 'For All Time'
  17. Anyone have any info regarding the new Brubeck box coming out next month? Here's what Columbia/Legacy have to say about it: More than any other improvising artist during the past 45 years, the pianist / composer/ bandleader Dave Brubeck (b. 1920) has expanded the rhythmic horizons for the general public, essaying with ever-increasing assurance time signatures like 5/4, 7/4 and even 13/4 while creating a body of work that is notable for its consistent levels of melodic content and harmonic invention. Recorded between 1959 and 1965, this five-disc set captures the Brubeck quartet featuring the floating alto saxophone of Paul Desmond (composer of the million-selling "Take Five"), at the peak of their powers. In addition to such Brubeck signatures as "It's a Raggy Waltz," "Blue Rondo a la Turk," "Unsquare Dance" and, course, "Take Five," FOR ALL TIME's repertoire also presents an improvisation from one of Dave's liturgical pieces, a variation of the folk song "Frankie and Johnny," and Brubeck's work for quartet and 45-piece orchestra, "Elementals." It doesn't give a track listing for this set. Judging by the title, one would assume that this box will include all of his 'Time' albums. Can anyone confirm this?
  18. Don't forget to factor in the "Music Points" you get if you were to purchase this from BMG. Each point is worth $1. They add up after a while...
  19. Just a heads up to anyone who may not have picked this one up yet - it's still available from CyberMusicSurplus and the price has been cut even more. I just ordered it tonight for $6.80 (including shipping)!
  20. This one's gone. I just snagged it. Thanks jazzshrink!
  21. I feel sorry for the firefighters if, god forbid, that place ever catches fire...
  22. Thanks for the replies, guys. I guess we can just add this to the "What could have been..." list. Sigh. -_-
  23. Was listening to Dolphy's rendition of Monk's "Epistrophy" on the 'Last Date' album and am now wondering... Did these two ever play together? Record together? If so, I'm not aware of anything. It would be fascinating to hear, that's for sure... Anyone know?
  24. I'm in agreement with Lon on this one. It's hard for me to get into this one due to Hartman's vocals. I just don't dig that vocal style too much, in general, really... Coltrane plays beautifully, however.
  25. I know I'm not the only one who's been waiting for this... NORTHERN EXPOSURE IS FINALLY COMING TO DVD!!! Just got an email from Amazon stating that the first season will be released in May. Here's a link with more info... Northern Exposure DVD on Amazon May just can't come soon enough. I've been waiting for this for years!
