  1. Steve Lacy (soprano), Jean-Jacques Avenel (bass), John Betsch (drums)...
  2. Can't you just see those words in gold on a championship belt ???!!! "Ladies and gentleman, in this corner, your reigning world champion THREAD KILLER OF THE THREAD KILLER THREAD..."
  3. Just waiting for the first picture to load, I saw "tubax" in the link-name flashing at the bottom of my screen... I wasn't even TRYING to cheat!
  4. Tenor, trombone and drums -- i.e., Joey Baron's trio "BARON DOWN"!!! Tongue in Groove [Polygram 1993] Raised Pleasure Dot [New World 1994] Crackshot [Avant Records 1998]
  5. I heard that first from Bambi's mother: "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all." Then the hunters shot her.
  6. Yeah, that's what gets to me. Happened to at least my first 10 posts over at BNBB. It's a wonder I kept plugging away at it! The only one of my threads that no one responded to here was "RIP: Althea Gibson" -- no other fans of 1950s women's tennis? -- I was shocked, shocked I tell you!
  7. Word. [James Brown, James Carr, Etta James, Aretha, Marvin, Otis, Ann Peebles, Carla Thomas, Rufus Thomas, Betty Wright, O.V. Wright, Al Green, Sam Cooke, Clarence Carter...]
  8. RIP, and thanks...
  9. How about Beck's "Rowboat" -- either his original or Johnny Cash's cover ??? In a way it is kind of "standard" -- the story anyway: "she don't wanna be my friend no more" -- but it has an odd progression right at the start -- that really conveys a kind of half-drunk, trying-to-laugh-off-something-really-sad, ground-about-to-give-way feeling...
  10. BUT -- that reminds me of a fellow music student from my college days, a cellist, definitely Jewish, whose last name was, believe it or not, Goy. So nu?
  11. The photos are beautiful, Mark! And so is the site, Jeff! Cool links -- including this one, for all your web design needs: http://www.jeffblakedesign.com/index.html (spamming on AB's behalf -- not that there'd be anything wrong with it if HE did!)
  12. Valaida Snow sans trumpet...
  13. Valaida Snow blowing with the Count Basie orchestra

  20. Don is not Jewish, but you're absolutely right about knowledge of Yiddishkeit. I think you're also right that Dave Douglas isn't. But Josh Roseman (trombone on "Don Byron Plays the Music of Mickey Katz") definitely IS.
  21. She's somewhere back on page 2 or 3, but certainly worth repeating!
  22. Kim Clarke (of Defunkt): and with Allison Miller on drums:
