Joe's also on a third tune -- Canción Para Cádiz. All three tunes are fairly long too (almost 27 minutes of tunes with Joe). IMHO, Joe's contribution to all three tunes is as good as anything he recorded in the 90's. The whole date can be sampled here, and those in the US can hear (stream) the whole thing here for free. My bad, you're right, Joe's on three tracks. And the CD is a very good one, including the trio tracks as well.

Good album, but be aware that Henderson appears on only two of the nine tracks, the title track "Lexicon" and a stirring version of "Caravan". Rosnes always did have a close connection with Henderson. I have a Joe Henderson CD titled PUNJAB (Arco), probably very hard to find now, where she is one of a three woman rhythm section that Joe featured at an engagement at "Bradley's" in San Francisco in Nov '86, (includes Marlene Rosenberg (b) and Sylvia Quenca (d) ). Rosnes is listed as "Irene Rosnes" on the date. A Rosnes-led CD I particularly love that features Henderson is FOR THE MOMENT (Blue Note), recorded in Feb '90. The opening track, a version of "Summer Night", is especially terrific.

The very first Simone LP that I purchased some 40+ years ago which I still have. It remains my favorite of her many recordings. Got to see her at the Newport JF back in '64 as well.

I am enjoying this wonderful DVD of two concerts performed in Europe in the mid and late '60s:

Well, the Sox have exposed one glaring weakness of the Rays. Obviously, they have no dominant closer. That display of relief pitching was pretty pathetic. Every hit the Sox got from the 7th on was legit, no bloopers or seeing eye hits. Good thing, the Rays are coming home, although that by no means is a guarantee they'll win one. This coming day off is not one they welcome, I suspect. Pressure!

A sad reminder that tempus fugit. I recall to use a cliche as if it were yesterday, going to Yankee Stadium and seeing Tresh hit three homeruns in what used to be a common baseball occurrence, a doubleheader in which you paid one admission to see two games, with only 20 minutes to a half hour separating game 1 from game 2. Anyway, Tresh was a switchhitter, and he hit those dingers from both sides of the plate that day. (Don't ask me if they were two righty, one lefty or two lefty, one righty).

I now see why Garciaparra has been on the bench for the Dodgers. Comes up in the 9th as the tying run, two men on base. He's had a good opportunity in the on-deck circle to see Lidge's sliders consistently miss the strike zone. I thought for sure he would show some patience at the plate and force Lidge to come in with a strike. So what happens? He swings futilely at three straight pitches, not one of them close to being a strike. Game over. Utterly pathetic!

On a Rollins, but somewhat unrelated, note, I have to wholeheartedly endorse the Rollins material currently available on the latest Jazz Icons box set. The Sonny disc itself contains wonderful material from the '60s, a live trio date with NHOP and Allan Dawson in '65, as well as a TV studio quartet date done in '68 with Kenny Drew, NHOP, and Al "Tootie" Heath. However, only available by purchasing the entire box set, is a bonus disc that contains two Sonny trio dates from 1959 before he went on the "Bridge" hiatus. The first date, which I have owned on a commercial videotape, is from a Stockholm TV session with Henry Grimes and Joe Harris. The second, performed in front of a live Dutch audience is with Grimes and Pete La Roca. Great stuff! (Note to Allen: If you say "no thanks' to this material, you're really missing out.)

Congrats to the Sox who IMO had the series won once they took two from the Angels in L.A. Nevertheless, how could Aybar, the Angels' best bunter, waive at a very "buntable" pitch on a suicide squeeze? Angels deserved to lose after that glaring lack of execution. Aybar should be haunted by that the entire winter.

Lou Piniella couldn't hide the disgust he felt in the postgame clubhouse interview. He kept mentioning that 6 runs offense in a three game series just won't get it done. I'm happy for Torre but I certainly could understand the frustration Cub fans must feel. I think the Dodgers could get past the Brewers, but the Phillies are the best in the NL at this point.

Spotted: Sonny Rollins--The Freelance Years, cheap!
MartyJazz replied to Alec's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I have an extra box set of "The Freelance Years" (long story). But I'd rather give it away to someone I personally would know as a serious Rollins fan, or even some young person that I suspect could become a Newknut, than sell it at such a ridiculously low price. -
Well, now that you mention it, I had forgotten, and OK, now I understand. But don't get me wrong, as a Yank fan, none of these playoff results truly get to me, although I am pulling for Tampa Bay.

And its depressing the hell out of me. Hey, in baseball, depression is reserved for the one team you love that disappoints the hell out of you. So snap out of it, your Sox are up 1-0 and have snatched home game advantage. As for the Cubbies, it looks like it'll be 100+ years and still counting. Besides, wouldn't it be exciting for you to possibly see Torre and Manny face your beloved Sox?

Name some Blue Note cds you find overrated
MartyJazz replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Recommendations
One doesn't have to be "on" all the time. Take Green's IDLE MOMENTS. There are magnificent "chillin'" (to use your word) versions of "Django", "Idle Moments" and there's also a straight ahead gem such as "Jean de Fleur". AM I BLUE on the other hand, is in no way " the greatest treasure in the Blue Note vaults", indeed the Blue Note reputation would not exist if that mediocre record were to epitomize its output. I had an original BN mono LP of AM I BLUE and cut it loose many years ago with no regrets since (other than the fact that I probably could now get big bucks from some completist collector of BN originals). But to each his own. As far as the subsequent post by Niko that lauds AM I BLUE while denigrating BLUE TRAIN, I really don't know how to respond to that bit of absurdity. -

I've never heard that one, Richard, but I was surprised to see it on sale last year as a new 12" LP at Fopp, just off Market Street, which I'm sure you know. I don't think you've missed anything Bill. From 1957, it's a nice line-up - rhythm section of Horace Silver, Curly Russell and Blakey, but it seems uninspired. I have to go into Manchester for work next week (not been for about 2 years) so I'll have a look in Fopp and Vinyl Exchange. I disagree entirely. Two tracks alone, "Bo-till" and "Evil Eye" are worth the price of admission. Not only are the tenor solos of Jordan and Gilmore wonderful, Blakey kicks ass on this date. My chief nomination for lackluster BN recording, and I confess I haven't gone through the myriad number of responses on this thread where it should have been mentioned by someone, is Grant Green's AM I BLUE. Truly a terribly boring date. Hard to figure since Joe Henderson is on it, but nevertheless.......yuk! -
Nice for the Yanks to help the stumbling Rays out and make sure in a laugher that the Red Sox are the WC who now must play the team with the best record in baseball, the Angels.

WOW, remember back when the yankee fans had a team to root for ?....now who has the curse? Hey, even when we were riding high, a lean year or two (or three or more) would always appear. As for a curse, I'll leave that for Cub fans, it's been 100 years since their last WS triumph, correct? Furthermore, I'll take a year off after 13 straight seasons of playoffs with a chance to win it all every time. But living here in south Florida with frequent opportunities to watch the Rays and being an American League fan, has me rooting for them this year. That and the fact that their roster salaries amount in total to what A-Rod makes, makes them all the more appealing.
-
This Yankee fan is rooting hard for the Rays. Anyone know if and when Carl Crawford is coming back? Carlos Pena et al have really picked it up in his absence but it would be really nice to see CC back in the lineup because he is their best all around player IMO.

Maybe she still harbors a grudge against the Yanks for when they unloaded her father on the hapless Boston Braves at the tail end of his career.

David Foster Wallace RIP
MartyJazz replied to clifford_thornton's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I became aware of Wallace upon reading "A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again", a book of "essays and arguments", the title of which perfectly describes in hysterically funny prose the "ordeal" (my term) of going on a cruise. It is quite disturbing that someone with so much literary talent and accomplishment would end his life so young. Really unfathomable and a damn shame. -
If indeed, Marcello is saying that the Brits have, in your words "a culture where tone of voice trumps substance so often that some people just go straight to tone of voice, regardless", well we know that at least politically, that very well describes the U.S.A. AFAIAC, any denigration, belittling, of Dameron in a book that purports to be a jazz reference of some kind, is ample cause for critical refutation. I've been to concerts where all Dameron music was performed, i.e., the group "Dameronia" back in the late '80s. Terrific music and sheer heaven! Indeed, the fact that a group such as Dameronia existed, negates the Jazz on CD authors' viewpoint completely.

Well, I certainly didn't expect that comeback. Hey, Papelbon is your closer, I don't think Francona could have done anything else. In any event, a beautiful win for the Rays.

This Jet fan is of course happy that Favre had a successful debut as the NYJ QB. But props to ex-NYJ QB Pennington who put quite a scare into Jet fans with two fabulous end game drives, one resulting in a TD, the other resulting in a game saving interception in the end zone with five seconds to go.

Now that the Yanks are realistically, if not mathematically, dead in terms of the postseason, what's the assessment on the job Girardi did? Yeah, there are all kinds of killer injury excuses, but the fact is that Torre was 12 of 12 in making a playoff appearance (not to mention the 6 WS with four wins). The G-man is 0 for 1. Girardi of course will be back. Will be interesting to see what changes the Yanks can and will make.
