A damned good question, and one that we're still trying to come to grips with. ← ...which makes me recall what Sam Rivers said to me about 30 years ago, when I posed a similar question to him in conversation: "It's all been done". In light of his continual creativity and tenor mastery even at his advanced age, a hell of a statement to make, don't you think?

OK, I figured out why I have a problem and it certainly does not reflect well on All Music.com. It seems AMG no longer fully supports a Netscape browser which is the one I primarily use. When I accessed the site via Internet Explorer I got everything as before, i.e., photos of the individual artists as well as album cover jpgs.
-
I don't know from where you're pulling the album jpg files. I just looked up McCoy Tyner's ILLIMINATIONS, a recent album. Here's the link to the site which specifies all the tunes performed on the album. Where's the photo jpg of the album cover? http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:b7f8zff3eh6k AFAICS, you have to click on "buy" which takes you to an Amazon.com site wherein you can see a small jpg of the album cover. The album covers though are no longer on the All Music site. Martin

They got rid of the pictures which makes for a print-riddled, eye unappetizing, site. No photos of the musicians of which you used to be able to catch 3 or 4 of a particular artist at different stages of his/her career, as well as, no jpgs of the individual albums. Can't understand the thinking that went into ths revamp.

Baby", "Love is Just Around the Corner", "Easy Street", All I do is Dream of You". 1958, Cecil Taylor Quartet with Earl Griffith, Buell Neidlinger & Dennis Charles - LOOKING AHEAD! (Contemporary):

Fabulous! I'm amazed at how tremendously together Diz and Bird are as early as June 1945. The disc is not just historically interesting, it's damn essential! Great music. Sidenote: It's a kick also listening to Catlett speak.

June 8th. Also recorded on this date: 1954, Bud Powell Trio with Percy Heath & Art Taylor: "It Never Entered My Mind", "A Foggy Day", "Time Was", "My Funny Valentine" (Verve). 1980, Bill Evans Trio with Marc Johnson & Joe Labarbera perform at the Village Vanguard - Disc 6 of TURN OUT THE STARS box set (Warner Brothers). 1988, Mingus Big Band performs at the Theatre-Boulogne-Billancourt - LIVE IN PARIS, Vol. 1 (Soul Note).

I had a late friend who couldn't abide Mingus's music primarily due to personal reasons, i.e., he had witnessed a couple of incidents in which Mingus's legendary temper was displayed. Anyway he got a kick out of a misspelling I noticed on the edge of the original United Artists LP, MONEY JUNGLE, mono copy. Anyone who has this LP will notice that on the spine, along with the names of Ellington & Roach, there is this: "Charlie Minus."

Thanks for the link. I'm listening to the show right now.

Beautiful, Jim, a terrific review. This is the one Milestone that I listen to with some kind of frequency and your analysis is quite insightful for the lay person and I'm sure, enlightening to the reed player who reads it. Much appreciated!

I took this out of the mailbox on my way to the gym and decided to put it on my personal CD player while getting my aerobic workout on the elliptical cross trainer. The opening of that first track nearly threw me off the machine! Chaotic beginning but then settled in and while it traversed a lot of territory, I particularly liked the South African (at least, to my ears) closing. Don't know who it is, but I enjoyed it. 2. Nice muted trumpet on what sounds to me like "Nom di Menticar" - excuse my spelling. Again, no guess. 3. Alto player sure has chops but solo alto is definitely not my thing. Too self indulgent for my taste. 4. Can't remember this track, oh wait, was it alto with percussion? Alto wasn't as up front recording-wise as #3. Don't know who. 5. How can a band play for 14 minutes and then have a fadeout ending? I detest fadeouts but they're particularly inexcusable on long tracks. Otherwise, didn't do much for me. OK, will get back to the disc sometime soon.

Stan Getz My Foolish Heart: Live at the Left Bank
MartyJazz replied to tooter's topic in Discography
>That 25 years separates the Getz and ECM versions isn't discouraging >since "Jacob's Ladder" was in the Getz repertoire and didn't make it >to an issued album until 1989 with Hank Jones. Likewise for "The >Oracle", not issued until 1989 as well. I wrote several songs for Stan which were to be recorded by him. These plans were cancelled after he said he would only record my compositions if they were owned by his publishing company. This was something that I wouldn't agree to. All the best, Dave. ← -
