  1. I was at the concerts - pretty wide-ranging and fantastic. It's always a great reminder to hear Allen's saxophone playing in person - he's got quite an individual sound, certainly Parkerian but with his own bitter quirks and rhythmic/melodic freedom. My only quibble is actually with Allen's generosity - he gives so much space for musicians to do their own things within the compositional frameworks that one doesn't always get to hear him stretch out as much as one would like. But yes, a fascinating Sunday and his discs deserve equal and prolonged attention.
  2. Same. There's more to life than "records" or even "objects of aesthetic importance." That said, I do have 'em insured.
  3. Me too. Now: Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage - (BN Liberty USA stereo, RVG)
  4. My memory is that it was mostly one long - or a few longer - pieces. Either way, it was a transcendent experience (and I've seen them before/since - this was singular).
  5. Yeah, pretty nutty album. I haven't listened to it in years (not that that has any bearing on quality - just time and priorities).
  6. I was there! And it was an amazing concert. Would love to hear it again as I don't have that CD.
  7. I don't know if what you're paying is always higher - I'm young but have been buying jazz LPs for almost 20 years. Some stuff was expensive then, but a lot of it wasn't nearly as expensive as it is now. So yeah, I may have paid less for X record than you may have, but that might have been in 1997 when certain things were cheaper. In the mid-1990s you couldn't even find some of these private-press things to pay for them, and the obscure Eurojazz titles were just pipe dreams to anyone who wasn't hitting up Utrecht and boot sales 20+ years ago. Now one can buy them off of Discogs and eBay (still, VERY rarely in stores - that model has changed) but it's going to cost you to do so. It's nice to be in the position to say 'I want to find a copy of this weird record' and be able to write someone, pay them, receive and listen to it. Sure, it would be nice were things $5.99 in 2015, but I'll gladly pay more just to have access to these albums. Also, when I've sold on Discogs, I've NEVER priced anything at the top of the market. Always hit the middle.
  8. Roy Brooks - Beat - (Workshop Jazz, US orig)
  9. Most good stuff is no longer as cheap as it once was. Oh well. I think a lot of jazz records are still expensive... not, you know, rinked CTIs and 80s Columbia titles, but even 70s Prestige dates can run $15-$20. At the end of the day, that might be the cost of two pints of beer here in NYC and it's a toss-up which I'd rather have!
  10. Kinda feel the same way about that record, but it's nice enough and I'm glad to have a copy.
  11. Right. Not sure.
  12. Praskin would've been 18 for most of 1967, so I think it's somebody else. But that's Rudd for sure. Took another look and I'm willing to bet it's the Heckman-Summerlin Improvisational Jazz Workshop, with Lew Gluckin on flugelhorn.
  13. Had a few, including Gorilla, at one point but couldn't justify keeping them as I could never really get into the music. May try again someday.
  14. Yeah, I have a red label mono that suffices. Have encountered others that did not. Pulled it out recently and it is always a musical delight.
  15. Red label copies should be free of this defect. It's common among later pressings of this title.
  16. you need to buy another three to participate in this thread.
  17. In 1980s NYC, Karen Finley was very well known for yams...I'll say no more, but you could look it up. The act was bizarre and hugely controversial. Weirdly, I went to high school with Finley (Evanston Twp. H.S. fyi, Larry), but it was a huge school and I never met her. ah right - haven't thought about Finley in ages. Good article on her here: http://www.dallasobserver.com/music/echoes-and-reverberations-karen-finley-and-the-delicate-art-of-disgust-7068255
  18. Yeah, not sure how much I paid for either of the Brötzmanns. I don't think they were ridiculously expensive. The only LPs of Herr Brö that I've thrown down for have been Hot Lotta and the Atsugi Concert, but those are pretty tough to track down and it felt 'worth it' (as if any of this stuff really is...).
  19. nudity was definitely part of Moorman's thing. But she did play music and was heavily involved in contemporary music/dance at the close of the '50s and early '60s. Yoko Ono, Nam Jun Paik, and artists associated with Fluxus (which was in part a contemporary music movement, though most composers split after the mid-60s) were a massive influence. I thought she did something with Bill Dixon but can't remember exactly what/when. Chocolate sauce sounds more like Carolee Schneemann. Sure, performance art is ephemeral. You did have to 'be there' for most of it. Professionally I work as an archivist for a major performance, installation and theater artist (historical, but still active), so I can try to give context if anyone cares. Performance art has enough of a history that there is certainly a stand-alone aesthetic, although most performance of the '60s and '70s also drew from non-performative visual situations.
  20. damn. Hope he's on the up and up in short order.
  21. I like Ineke's drumming. Haven't heard this one however.
  22. I'm still waiting to hear if my copy has been shipped. I appreciate that they are a small concern but they've been exceptionally poor communicators. I paid for my copy over 13 months ago and have only had updates as I've repeatedly chased them up. Now the thing is out I've nothing again.? That is poor indeed. I tend to get prompt replies from the shop manager Mark but maybe that's because I'm usually about to spend money with them It probably doesn't help to know that copies are on display at the venue It arrived today and is a great release up to their usual high standards. Communication needs to improve to say the least. By beef was not the delay but being kept in the dark. Glad to hear you've got it and are enjoying it. It is indeed very good meanwhile.... Brotzmann, van Hove, Bennink, Mangelsdorff - Outspan No.1 [FMP] I definitely want No. 2 now 1 is better than 2.
  23. I'd be into at least hearing a good example of the later band, though I prefer the earlier stuff.
