People and the Halvorson-Pavone duo are not really improvised music - more weird rock or weirdo chamber pop/folk stuff. I'd forgotten about the Thirteenth Assembly. The second disc is really good - I'm less into the first.

I believe it came out on CD in the 1990s - have definitely listened to a CD copy of it before. Really good one.

I haven't listened much to her work over the past two years, at least on record, but I really dug the trio stuff with Hébert and Ches Smith. I'm not sure the quintet is totally up my alley although I did write notes for the second quintet record, and at the time was feeling the arc. Going back to it later it's interesting but doesn't jolt me the way the trio disc did. There's a preciousness and a studied 'oomph' that I wish was a little more fluid. Thumbscrew I've enjoyed more live than on record - nice trio with Formanek and Fujiwara. I'm also pretty into the two trio discs with Weasel Walter and Peter Evans - that stuff is warped! Looking forward to her solo guitar album and, from a different perspective, totally on board with the indie rock band she's part of, People. "Skin Graft-lite" as a friend put it, and that seems accurate. Thanks for the reminder on MAP - earlier, heavy stuff with the great percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani. I like Anti-House and the Tom Rainey Trio a lot, though approach it more from the Laubrock-Rainey perspective than the Halvorson perspective.

The Kofsky book is fascinating. There's an old hardbound anthology of Jazz & POP writing, including much of his, that's pretty neat as well. Have it in storage, I think.

Yeah, I wasn't so into Cook's BN book either. The new BN coffee-table book has so much awful writing it's insane, but the photos and album art are so well presented I can't dismiss it completely.

I didn't like Heffley's Northern Sun, Southern Moon.

Now you've gotten me actually digging the first Mothers LP (historically not a FZ fan at all).

The LP known later as Chile Pepper was issued by Tampa in 1958 as the Marty Paich Quartet.

If you aren't into the "ECM sound," go earlier in the catalog - Bley's Ballads (originally slated to be on ESP, supposedly), Richie Beirach's Eon, Corea's ARC, the Waldron... Dollar Brand's African Piano is great - originally released on the tiny Danish label Spectator, then reissued by Japo. Garbarek's Witchi-Tai-To is also a classic and sounds good.

A grand ol' anglo-saxon academic tradition, that ... and one that could indeed be stopped with little loss (except for U presses earning the sh*t ouf ot those books that every library all over the world has to buy). News flash: not everything is perfect! I take issue with some parts of almost every book on jazz/improvised music I've ever read, but that's not to say that many aren't extremely valuable. Piazza's Guide to Classic Recorded Jazz pissed me off though. Lots of really dumb statements in it, which seemed to just play up to Wynton-defined hard bop as the primary valid expression of creative music.

Indeed, fine stuff. Somewhere I have buried a CD-R of live material that's even heavier.

I've seen that LP a couple of times - seems to be fairly coveted by the DJ set.

$710 is cheap for that record. Haven't dug out Strange Blues in years - will have to crack the CD storage boxes and find it again... I didn't even remember the rhythm section was such a curious one.

I don't recall them vocalizing (as per the OP's query) but maybe I'm wrong.

That record looks very cool.
