  1. With Hot Stampers the idea is to get a mix of stampers on an earlier pressing, each of them fresh, to get the best sound. So it would likely be a US pressing very early in the run. But it doesn't have to be a true first - firsts off of worn-out stampers would theoretically sound less good. It's probably 99.9% bullshit but who knows. I just buy stuff that looks and smells clean and try to be happy with that. Oh, checking the Morgan - it's a rechanneled Liberty stereo from no earlier than 1968.
  2. Sad to hear of his passing - he definitely made a mark.
  3. The hot stamper shit is next level insanity.
  4. Oh shit, that's brutal.
  5. What? How? I didn't know he was ill. RIP - had many nice conversations with him over the years. This is a shock.
  6. Old thing I wrote on New Phonic Art: http://www.paristransatlantic.com/magazine/monthly2007/04ap_text.html#3 In other words, if I wrote it today it would look a lot different...
  7. More familiar with his early work, all of which I have on LP. I saw him live during the Minneapolis/We Insist era and it was much more interesting than the discs from that time. He's a fantastic player and a nice guy - I interviewed him for AAJ, and that might still be posted. Also the Tom Perchard (board member umum_cypher !) book "After Django" covers Portal in some detail and I recommend it without hesitation - it's a wonderful volume.
  8. Still want an orig of this - never seen one though. There was supposed to be an authorized reissue of this when Lasha was still alive but I think with his passing it fell apart.
  9. I won't add my political .02 here but it seems like a very weak move on the part of the venue. Lame.
  10. Cool - I have everything that was on LP but this would make a great Father's Day gift this year.
  11. There's also a Colin solo bass clarinet disc on In Situ that I haven't heard, but it's probably good. From 1990 so not that easy to find.
  12. I really like some of Newborn's recordings a lot; the only ones that didn't do much for me were the RCA-Victor sessions. But I should probably revisit them with open ears sometime.
  13. I guess you should keep going back there...
  14. And Konitz' "Keepin' the News."
  15. Horace said that, not me. And I was responding to post #69, which brought up what Horace said but got the quote a bit wrong. Oh, I know that!
  16. Thanks, that makes sense. FWIW, the Mercury record is a bit more interesting and evenly-odd than the ESP, which is wild but maybe more in the vein of "trying on some fancy shoes that look really awesome but do they actually fit?"
  17. Berio is an amazing composer. Nono did compose for contrabass clarinet and electronics as well, beautiful stuff. Caught James Falzone's Renga Ensemble last night - Vandermark, Stein and Rothenberg all busting out bass clarinets and Keefe Jackson on contrabass clarinet. Excellent music.
  18. I would like to pull all my old content (interviews, reviews, articles) from that stupid site and post it somewhere else.
  19. yeah, my CBS Oxleys don't sound all that great. They look fine.
  20. Would be interesting to see if the op has any further input...
  21. Did James go into commercial music and abandon creative music just to make shitloads of money, or is there more to the story? I mean, the ESP and Mercury albums are quite good...
  22. Nasheet is wonderful. Not sure about 'greatest,' but certainly a fantastic player with a beautiful vibe.
