  1. An uncomfortable or coerced 'yes' or a 'maybe' that is arrived at through similar means isn't a 'hell yes.' In a hookup, that's the only kind of 'yes' that should hold (not to mention the only one I would want to hear).
  2. I'll add that every time I attend a performance situation like this, which leaves me unhappy, I feel a bit like it's my fault - I know in my heart that I love this music dearly, and there's no shortage of ringside cheerleaders, but the experience on the whole is just so flat. This is sometimes to the point of feeling like the kid in "The Emperor's New Clothes." Am I being a cynical dick or does some of this stuff just not hold up?
  3. If there's any doubt, consent goes out the window.
  4. I got saddled with a horrible cold on Friday that kept me waylaid through most of the weekend. Rallied to catch the tail end of Sunday - the Hamiet Bluiett Orchestra - and I wasn't into it. The sound was terrible and I was far back in the room. Even if the piece was good - which it might've been - I couldn't tell.
  5. Oh, I know you didn't. That was an implication Mr. Thornton made. Maybe you didn't catch my wording, but the point was is that we all know women who've experienced assault and it may even be someone we know closely. Not everyone feels comfortable sharing the details, so it's more rampant than you'd like to believe.
  6. As a message board mostly made up of men, we likely won't ever understand what it means to be a woman in this society and the many ways in which rape culture plays out. I doubt that many of us have been assaulted, but I bet quite a few of the women we know have been. I'm sure Cosby's shit is familiar enough to our girlfriends, wives, and friends.
  7. Good one. Peter Kuhn also has an LP privately released called Livin' Right, which is excellent.
  8. All of this I agree with completely.
  9. Milford's set had some really fine moments and the trio of Craig Taborn, Sean Conly and Gerald Cleaver that Darius Jones had going was superb. But the sound still sucked and by the time the NY HeArt Quartet finished, they were running about 2 hours late and I was tired. I did want to see the last two acts but I wasn't staying until 1 AM.
  10. I can hear the audience crinkling Snickers bar wrappers better than I can hear and/or separate the music from the middle of the room. I thought Nathaniel Mackey's reading was the best thing so far, though his verbiage was lost to a poor/indistinct miking situation.
  11. So far I have not been pleased with the venue/sound or most of the music.
  12. Power is a turn-on for some people and those women were rendered utterly powerless. Disgusting. It is a bummer because I too enjoyed his early comedy and he seemed like a genuine and perceptive jazz fan. Also, knowing he has a foot fetish makes Badfoot Brown read just a little differently...
  13. I really should pick those up at some point.
  14. I believe that BE! Jazz are doing bootlegs. The Holy Hill set, which they also did, was originally a boot so there's nothing to authorize in reissuing it... Dragon owns the Eje Thelin masters for that Metronome record, and I find it hard to believe they'd license it to some crappy vinyl repro label.
  15. Nice... still holding out for a clean OG of Zodiac. It's an excellent record.
  16. yeah, that DTM interview is heavy - thanks for the reminder.
  17. Excellent player - sad to see him go.
  18. Some thoughts here: http://cliffordallen.blogspot.com/2015/07/farewell-to-guitarist-garrison-fewell_5.html
  19. Hugh Hopper/Soft Head - Rogue Element - (Ogun UK)
  20. Yeah, it's a major bummer. I knew he had limited time on Earth - heard from another Berkelee prof a year or so back - but he never let it faze him. Brilliant artist and a generous, warm guy. He will be missed.
  21. Yeah, the recording suffers a bit on that one. I have an original Savoy that sounds murky, but the music is sublime. The score of "Winter Song" (the longer piece - the titles are switched on the record) was printed in an issue of Down Beat in '65 or '66 I believe.
  22. New York Art Quartet - call it art (LP2) - (Triple Point)
  23. Steve Lacy - Disposability - (VIK, IT)
