  1. yeah, I have heard about this. They buy up dollar chud in bulk and price it at $15+.
  2. I'm looking forward to Mark's BFT! Bet it'll be filled with amazing stuff that I will have to scour the ends of the earth for...
  3. Does George sing on many tracks? I've always struggled with his vocals and have avoided this album just in case. That line-up's sure to deliver though He sings one one blues - "Got Somethin' Good For You." I like his singing, but everyone's taste is different, of course. Thanks Jeff. now playing Mal Waldron - The Quest [New Jazz] You're not the only one with an aversion to George Adams' singing. His singing on "Devil Blues" is ridiculous. Dude had cajones. Gotta give it to him even if it's hammy.
  4. Alan's great. I need to start buying from him again - haven't been buying much since the spring. Too much going on.
  5. the double LP is usually very cheap. You can always give it to a friend when you procure the Mosaic set.
  6. wow. Pullen was really something else, especially during the 1970s.
  7. It doesn't sound horrible or anything. It's good but I'm not sure it's on the level of the Montmartre sets. It's been a while since I've spun it however, as I find myself returning to the Debut records when I go for that period of his work.
  8. Newish Tom Rainey Obbligato is pretty wonderful. TUM has a deep catalog so far. I can't keep up with all of it but they seem like they're doing something right.
  9. All Tristano is worth having, afaik.
  10. I just received a copy - looks interesting. I need to pick up Discovery for its inclusion of one of my favorite drummers, JC Moses. My dad used to have a few Lloyd records, which I tried on briefly as I was first getting into creative music, and they didn't fit. Have not heard his music in quite some time.
  11. This series of traditional recordings by the Royal Museum for Central Africa (Belgium) is pretty incredible. RMCA LPs for sale here, CDs can also be sourced (OOP).
  12. Ava is rad. I have seen her a few times and it's always been awesome. I'd always run into her at the Key Foods near my apartment because she lived 'round the corner for a while.
  13. Haven't really heard him. I'll have to give this a whirl, based on this review.
  14. Yeah I skipped that first series of non-ATP reunion shows. Of course by the time I heard them in the mid-90s they were long broken up. Now: Spontaneous Music Ensemble - Face To Face - (Emanem, UK orig)
  15. yeah, I had it on CD in high school, then LP, now the boxed set. Saw the doc on screen here in NYC and it is pretty hilarious - Jon Fine from Bitch Magnet was interviewing them afterwards, and the next night I caught Slint play in Brooklyn. Good times.
  16. Slint - Spiderland - (Touch & Go, from the boxed set reissue)
  17. glad everyone got their stuff (AFAIK). Hope you all enjoy it.
  18. Yeah, it's definitely in a class by itself.
  19. Not that I've seen, which is a shame. There are some woefully inadequate ones. A truly exhaustive sessionography would be a great resource (there's one for John Stevens and John Surman).
  20. ah. Got a preview listen to Pomegranate last night, which will be out in early 2015 on New Atlantis. Stephen Haynes, Joe Morris, William Parker, Ben Stapp and Warren Smith. It's unreal. Full disclosure: it was while zipping down the highway in Stephen's car, stereo at full blast.
  21. You were listening to that as I was hanging out with Stephen Haynes. Talk about full circle.
  22. Spiritual Moments is a wonderful record.
  23. well with Dolphy, at least I assume that the gaggle of "last recordings" at the time was really just a diverse bunch of albums he was making, without an eye to the "end." His departure was so sudden. Ayler seemed to have premonitions of departure, and the Shandars are definitely a step up from the frustrating final Impulse dates. I often feel like Ken McIntyre's inclusion on Unit Structures was a nod to Dolphy vis-a-vis Cecil. I assume that's why he was brought in, but am not 100% sure, and of course, McIntyre was a strong player and had his own voice (those UA and New Jazz LPs are tight).
  24. Indeed. First heard him with Braxton but it didn't take ALL that long to pick up on his playing with the SME and Tony Oxley, as well as his own recordings. It's all indispensable IMO. Dankworth --> Ichnos, I mean considering the scope of this music (and the fact that Wheeler could play equally brilliantly in these settings), that alone is impressive. Then you have his own small and large group material, and, well, damn.
