  1. Looking in my racks it appears I no longer have that LP for some odd reason. Gotta rectify that. Now: Roland Kirk - Here Comes the Whistleman - (Atlantic, orange/green label)
  2. George Gruntz - Noon in Tunisia - (MPS, Ger)
  3. Not really a bootleg label but Ulli Blobel is not exactly known for paying people either. The sound on some of that Kowald box isn't super hot, so I'm not surprised that they're made from shitty rips.
  4. Different music - the Storyville (ex-Polydor, exx-Sonet) was recorded live in Copenhagen, while the Fontana was recorded in the studio in New York.
  5. well at least you won't be disappointed by these.
  6. pithy but accurate discography here.
  7. were Kenny and Ronnie related?
  8. I've been known to leave the socks on when I get "down to business" too.
  9. It's "in the family." Thanks for your sentiments ! Hope you got some nice ones from that list, Clunky. I just wish that the Esquires were easier to find. From what I gather, Carlo Krahmer and Peter Newbrook pressed them in very small runs/batches and some of the titles must have only got 1-2 batches at most. I did rather too well which is why I passed on the Wallington. I didn't read Alan's email too closely and thus got the list a day later. Naturally everything I wanted was gone (including Decipher).
  10. Power by Pauer is a good one. Mary Lou Williams' Black Christ of the Andes came out on Mary/Folkways first, then Saba/MPS. So there is at least one reissue.
  11. Totally. And when she does shout it has knocked my socks off.
  12. I was tempted by a copy if this on Alan's specials list but in the end I just couldn't justify the cost. My K2 disc will have to suffice. Great session Yes, this is indeed the one from 'the list' and I was suprised that Alan still had it when I asked. I'm a huge fan of Esquires and this only comes up rarely so went for it. Much, much better condition than the sleeve pic shown ! Glad it went to a good home !! It's "in the family."
  13. I've never seen a Dutch Fontana with her artwork, just the Jazz Life cover. The Roling version seems to be a Japan-only thing. Bley's Blood is the same way.
  14. Re: the Impulses, I thought only Crisis was "unauthorized" according to Ornette. Maybe he signed a contract that he didn't like? Not sure. Yes, this is the Joker LP (it was also issued with the same title/art on Lotus). I agree, unraveling bootlegs or grey-label releases and semi-legit ones can be a tough task.
  15. I'd like to see this on the 23rd but I'll be at Oliver Lake & Baikida Carroll.
  16. Just because it's on a Japanese label doesn't mean it's legit. Ornette didn't get paid for the Paris Concert that Trio/Kenwood issued in the 70s either. That's definitely a boot, albeit a nice looking and sounding one. This Lotus/Joker thing (on LP as The Unprecedented Music of Ornette Coleman) is excellent but a pirated edition for sure.
  17. I am not sure what the audience was like, but I know that avant-garde groups performed at the Both/And in San Francisco with some regularity during the 1960s. There are recordings of Albert Ayler and Frank Wright playing at a rock club called La Cave in Cleveland. Wasn't there an Ayler gig or two at a club in Newark? I seem to remember reading about something like that...
  18. I know I've seen a few copies without a DJ sticker or promo cut, but they aren't easy to come by. Also for whatever reason most of the copies I've seen in the field have been trashed. I've got the Polydor UK pressing, which I guess is the only "commercial" issue (and I've seen that less than the US Verve - go figure).
