  1. I'm not too into Tyshawn for whatever reason (I've tried), so for me that's the issue with Paradoxical Frog. Davis is not a leader I particularly go for, but her playing with Laubrock has been excellent.
  2. The guitarist Noël Akchoté has posted a number of nice early and more recent photos of Thollot on his facebook page.
  3. Haha, yeah, I really wanted to interview him but with my lack of usable French, it wasn't going to happen. Glad you got to have the experience! Sounds like a fascinating, eccentric dude (I wouldn't expect anything less).
  4. Certainly not every IL gig/band I've heard has jelled but she works for the sound, and I appreciate that. Not a big fan of Malaby these days but I've heard him play some excellent stuff (less so on record). One Laubrock/Rainey duo gig I caught was just superb - she was blowing her head off, really going beyond her (admittedly strong) technical mastery. Those moments are something to see.
  5. BN 101 was apparently a John Hardee 78. Oh well, nice try!
  6. good one. Now: David Tudor - A Second Wind for Organ (pieces by Kagel, Wolff, Mumma) - (Odyssey) rather nice version of "Improvisation Ajoutée.
  7. That DB review of Zurich Concert was surprisingly lukewarm. I like the disc a lot, but I was even more floored by the ensemble live (with Alessi on trumpet). I don't think her compositions are quite as "undercooked" as certain reviewers make them out to be. And more importantly, her playing is rigorous and individualistic (again, I've noticed people calling her a "Tony Malaby clone" - imo, far from reality), and getting warmer by the day. Anti-House and Sleepthief are both excellent bands, with the former perhaps her most successful vehicle for writing and improvisation. I look forward to continually hearing what she comes up with.
  8. Hmm. I hadn't thought about that before but will be curious to chase down that road.
  9. Haha I thought I'd be close on 2-2, oh well!
  10. Oh man - I really missed seeing his posts here. He was a fun and knowledgable dude. So sorry to hear this. RIP Hans, and thanks for all of it.
  11. The Warwick is where it's at. Great record.
  12. I thought he had a habit that required his absence from the scene at the close of the '60s.
  13. yeah, the Bethlehem is good. Zoot's recordings for UK Fontana in the early '60s (done at Ronnie Scott's) are also very intense and very fine.
  14. Noah Howard - Schizophrenic Blues - (SAJ)
  15. 2-5 I would not be surprised if it was the bassist's record. Sounds familiar, almost Vitous-esque, but I can't place it. Will seek out whatever it is. 2-6 The tune itself isn't much, but I really like the drummer's approach - definitely rock-derived, but inventive. The bass player had something good going but he got cut off in his solo. Sounds of its era (1972-77) but welcome. 2-7 I dig the layered basses. Sounds like it could be a Herbert Joos thing, but I suppose his shit is a bit more aggro usually.
  16. 2-1 is cool. Sounds like one of the Michels (maybe) on bcl and someone else, but I'm really not sure. Whatever it is, I'll have to seek it out - pretty nutso. 2-2 sounds like early Ray Russell with Roy Fry (p) and Alan Rushton (d). Is this from Turn Circle (oddly I don't have that record) ? 2-3 I'm thinking Malcolm Griffiths on trombone, although the soprano playing seems a little less inventive than I'd expect for Surman. Could be John Taylor on piano and John Marshall on drums (in fact, it sounds like the latter). 2-4 Sounds crazily familiar! I am sure I have this but can't place it.
  17. The Lacy tune (1-7) is "The Owl" from The Wire - alas I only have this in MP3 format. A longtime want! Togashi is on drums. The rest of the record features Sato, Yoshizawa, Midorikawa, etc. but this track is a duo.
  18. yeah, I saw that... been sweating a clean OG for years. Had a rather beat copy that I couldn't justify keeping.
  19. 1-2 is from Samadhi - Sato, Peacock, Motohiko Hino. Track is called "Fall Out." Haven't listened to it in a while but it's pretty recognizable. So far I'm not sure on the others - haven't gotten very far - though the first tune has a heavy Finnish vibe to it.
  20. ah. I was praying it wasn't Zodiac or the Mouloudji, both of which I badly need and also couldn't afford this month anyway...
  21. 83% 4% mono Blue Notes
