  1. Too hard for me. I mean, I thought I knew "shit" because I have a lot of old BNs lying around. Guess not!
  2. Man, it's so hard to see the birthdays on facebook now. Happy Birthday!
  3. Shortly before Malachi passed, I saw him perform solo bass. He was going at it arco, and dropped his bow. Took a moment to collect himself, then picked it up off the stage and went back into it. He - and the audience - seemed rather surprised.
  4. I think he drops the drums.
  5. I'm totally fine with the "period" cover.
  6. I just got that email too. Is this legit?
  7. Yeah, that's a great one. I'd assume Tracey was in for Tippett, as he was the usual "second string" pianist.
  8. The BYG reissue of the quartet is entitled Peace.
  9. I've got an old Conn CD and the King LP. If I didn't already have a digital version that I was decently happy with, I would pick this one up. Of course, most CD's of older material I just keep for the car.
  10. It's funny, I gave it a spin last night for the first time in a while and his playing is like night and day from what he's done in subsequent years. At the same time, the music - and soloing on his part - is very, very clear. He's got a pretty complete conception (i.e., doing exactly what he wanted to do/could do at the time), even if it would change over the ensuing years. Thanks for the refresher, Chuck.
  11. Would love to see them make it over here sometime! Maybe I can get one of the promoters to book Couple in Spirit, no?
  12. I'm told that the disc covering "Free Jazz" doesn't do the scene(s) in Germany historical justice. Frankfurt & environs are pretty much left out.
  13. Ah good, I just nicked that from popsike. Looks like a lot of great photos to come from the session!
  14. Not to be confused with this, however:
  15. Now: Bill Dixon/Archie Shepp - Quartet - (Savoy original)
  16. Yeah, you might be right. At least as far as more "traditional" dates/contexts go. Can't be a "shrike" all the time.
  17. Lol Coxhill & Steve Miller - Miller/Coxhill-Coxhill/Miller - (Caroline)
  18. Dunno either. Can't wait for the reissue, though.
  19. Ovary Lodge - s/t - (RCA UK)
  20. It's excellent, indeed. I find his work since more engaging, but on its own terms this is a very strong LP. I'm not sure he even still has the tapes, as a lot of reels of his earlier work have been lost (Silva/Dixon duos, for starters).
  21. I understand being a round peg in a square hole. It's been one reason why, I think, I find it hard to find a good fit. I know it exists somewhere, but sure can be tough to find. If I was better with numbers, I'd be my own boss. That said, though Austin and environs seem to be weathering the storm comparatively well, it is tough to find a good job in my field (libraries). Lot of recent grads like myself looking for a gig. I've expanded my search to nationwide and keeping my fingers crossed. Luckily my girlfriend will also move, and is just finishing her graduate work. My hours will be fewer this summer (slow times for academics) but it'll be time well-spent looking for a new job.
  22. Think I'm going to dig into some Ovary Lodge when I get home.
