  1. I think it might have actually had more to do with radio airplay than any demographic marketing - when I was in college radio, we had a number of those A&M LPs in the racks, the Cecil being one of them. Not a bad record, but far from what I would choose as a good representation of his music (especially length-wise). But still, if you're a DJ and you wanted to play some Cecil, that was a good way to 'fit him in' to your set. Needless to say, I had late-evening programming and quickly graduated to 30-minute tracks.
  2. Stollman at AAJ A few props from the interviewer, yours truly, that this is worth a read. Let the flak fly!
  3. The King Japanese pressings of these various LA- and LT- sessions were chronologically significantly later than the cheapo US collections, am I right?
  4. No shit? Guess I shoulda bought it for $40 five years ago!
  5. Yes, a friend of mine has a copy and keeps going on about how great it is ( ). Can usually be picked up around the £15 to £20 mark, thankfully. It originally came out I think on the MFP budget label. Their usual 'fare' was Bert Kaempfert, 'Top Of The Pops' cover compilations etc. ← Yeah, I don't think I've seen another desirable title on MFP - which makes Curried Jazz all the more interesting.
  6. Jacques Coursil & Arthur Jones "Way Ahead" (BYG Actuel) Had to bust into a full U-Haul box to find that one! All the records are packed to move... And sidewinder, you really must get a copy of Curried Jazz. It is a great record!
  7. Yeah, they are great - especially the amount of previously unreleased stuff on there. I can't think any are particularly "rare" although the Hill was in some demand for a while.
  8. maybe if it were a clean copy...
  9. Thank goodness the Bley records haven't been packed for my move... I'll pull one out tonight! Great pianist from whom we hope to see many more!
  10. Yeah, I think he's the guy down the hall that always leaves his garbage by the door. Ugh.
  11. And you wonder why Jim starts random threads like this... Seriously, though, I'm in the same boat not wishing well those fellow board members on their birthdays. So and a general to y'all!
  12. It has been some time since I've heard this one, though I remember liking it well enough. Also fed into Karl Berger's brief Milestone foray - wonder whether we'll see that record reissued as an OJC?
  13. Cripes, I think it's coming down in price!
  14. Yeah, I saw that Milt Ward. Though I mainly tend to go there for the 'out' shit, it looked interesting. Let me know how it is.
  15. I know this is a little late, but you don't have to honor the "Second Chance," do you? I didn't think it reflected in your feedback or was a 'requirement.' It would make sense that only the winner is 'required' to pay up.
  16. Yeah, FE are a pain. Did get that Waters disc, but it was harrowing. November 15 was the last I heard for the Complete ESP-Disk Recordings, so that should be what, next week? Also, look for the liners penned by yours truly... Happiness Is a Thing Called Joe - great, great disc. The suite containing "You've Changed" is a mind-melter, for sure.
  17. That's probably a good enough reason, RT. Wait, what's all this about you not owning a turntable? Haven't I seen you bidding on vinyl?
  18. I'm sure a fair amount is lost in the translation to English, right?
  19. The Trapeze review is on Paris Transatlantic from maybe a year ago... That is a great album; Itaru Oki is on a number of free sides, and I think Georges Nouel is on other things as well - possibly the Ray Stephen Oche on Esperance?
  20. If only LaMont had a Blue Note in the 4300 series, life would be complete. 'Bout Soul is not my favorite McLean date by any means, and I really can't handle Barbara Simmons - especially when people like Jayne Cortez were just coming up onto the scene. It would've been nice to hear her read on a "soul thesis" from her loins, as she often does... Re: AEC: I don't know who the fuck Bill Howell is either, but I know I like him.
  21. I'll look when I get home - Shepp's liners are pretty distinctive, you know. They had some real idiots (like Claude Delcloo) writing those notes; though I've always liked Jean-Max Michel. Those records are terrible. Sorry.
  22. I dunno, though, Oxley is awesome anyway you cut it... Anybody here have the Surman/Levin duo on Ring? I'd like to check it out, but not if there are synthesisers to contend with.
  23. I think that first Skid is kinda weak, too - sort of trying to be like Mexican Green but not hitting the mark. The Philips is much better, in my opinion. When given the chance, the dude takes it there, but he just seemed lackluster when setting up his own bands half the time.
  24. Ubu, that is the one, and the lineup listed appears complete. First disc is way better, IMO, and I think the ramshackle vibe that the BNs had by the '70s is pretty much intact here - not so much Afro-American, though the Rev is in full effect.
  25. I've noticed that on various records - both my Fontana UK Ted Curson records have some distortion like this, and I've even run into a few mono BNs with this problem. I thought it might be limited to mono records, but that seems unlikely.
