  2. Did he also make one leader date with James Chirillo on guitar? I seem to recall them playing Love me Tender as a duet.
  3. A great man. RIP.
  4. Not able to get sound at this public terminal. Sonny looks good, though, and relaxed in giving his answers. What did they talk about?
  5. Anyone tune into this?
  6. To a great guy......
  7. Unfortunately I don't read Japanese. A shame, since it's a beautiful, pictorial language in print. I'm truly amazed, though, that there's no full-length book in English on this 75-year-old entity.
  8. About time. Forgive a silly question, but: Is there anything out on the label other than photo complitations?
  9. Language barrier is a problem for me, otherwise I'd love to. I'm still waiting for a biography on Jobim to be translated into English. But for German-speakers, enjoy!
  10. I'm sure question # 1 they'll want to ask is when is he going on the road again. This may prove frustrating for Sonny, who indeed wants to go out again but is listening to his doctors' advice to lay low. The link says 10 people were pre-selected. I wonder if the questions will be screened. Sounds like a great event, though, a cyber-sitdown with a Zen master and a way for Sonny to stay connected to his fans.
  11. Hear hear. And that same Gypsy Jazz format, usually solo and ryhthm guitars, violin, bass, sometimes horns----popularized by Django, Grapelli, et. al is still madly popular worldwide.
  12. Surprised no one's mentioned Ahmad Jamal's original trio with Ray Crawford, guitar; Israel Crosby, bass. Also, same instrumentation, Jimmy Raney: Wisteria (w/Tommy Flanagan, George Mraz). Tom Harrell has been touring under the name Trio of Life, with members of his quintet (Danny Grissett, piano; Ugonna Okegwo , bass). They are as yet unrecorded.
  13. An audience does need to make some allowances for older performers. But at some point, isn't it incumbent upon a performer (or those closest to him/her) to accept that the spirit may be willing, but the abilites are weakening. In the video, the St. Louis critics talked about Chuck Berry who apparently is still doing gigs around town there, with less than impressive results. Perhaps he needs the money, but who wouldn't rather remember him as the rock ' roll god he was rather than a shuffling old man? Agreed. Respectfully, it may be time for Mr. King to call it a great, long run and retire.
  14. I just read that longterm WBAI stalwart Robert Knight has passed away.
  15. Wes Montgomery with the Wynton Kelly Trio: Smokin' at the Half Note Sonny Rollins: Alfie Miles Davis: Anything with the Quintet Oliver Nelson: Blues and the Abstract Truth Really too many more to list for a time of such prolific recording.
  16. Eight wives? Wow. How did he ever make it to 93?
  17. Last week at 93.
  18. Never mind, I figured it out. Thanks.
  19. If you put your mouse over my screen name you see a dated comment about former NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg. I want to remove it and didn't see any way in my edit options. Will someone tell me how to do this? Thanks, Joel.
  20. http://jazztimes.com/articles/15731-sonny-rollins-interviewed-by-joshua-redman-newk-s-time Nice interview of Sonny by Joshua Redman.
  21. Will it be broadcast on Sonny's website?
