  1. He was my arranging teacher and the head of the jazz department at City College in the late '80s. I thought Ed was a rough customer then, but that was my immaturity. It took some years to realize that he was a great guy and on my side. (Same goes for Ron Carter). I got to hear a lot of his music and found it challenging and interesting. Serious listening. I miss Ed today.
  2. I'm sure this is worth having. He was my friend and a great guy. When I played with him he played tenor, and sounded really nice. He's associated with Sun Ra, but was actually a very mainstream musician.
  3. Don't know if anyone mentioned him, but Richard Wyands.
  4. Happy 85th Newk!
  5. I was surprised to see this, though I shouldn't have been. I wish Phil the best. He's a great guy.
  6. Enjoyed some Pres this morning and will listen again tonight.
  7. Yes, a profound loss.
  8. At twelve he already has some harmonic depth. I heard him on Jazz Night in America hosted by Christian McBride and he's pretty far along for a twelve-year-old. He even performed a credible Lush Life. We'll have to see what develops.
  9. Great player, very original. RIP.
  10. Virgil's an Indy guy....very good player, not well known! m~ Virgil was a great player. I worked with him some in the 80's. He died a few years ago.
  11. Good read, Mark. Thanks. RIP Ornette.
  12. Ditto on St. Nick's. He plays things you don't always hear him play. I wish the other soloists were recorded. Probably Jimmy Knepper was saving tape.
  13. Vocal: Tony Bennett (not sure of the recording, sorry). Instrumental: Chris Anderson, Solo Ballads Two.
  14. This recording is anathama, at least to me, b/c it features two dear friends, Clarence C. Sharpe and wife China Lynne Perault. They're given the tune of I Got it Bad, but unfortunately Shepp plays an obnoxious obligatto over both the vocal and C's alto solo and ruins the track.
  15. Aaaaaaaaaaaaand............he's back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Never mind.....
  16. Yes, food for thought. Thanks for posting.
  17. R.I.P Funny lady and they were together a long time.
  18. I don't think anyone really wished him harm.
  19. Nothing on his FB page about his disappearance from the airwaves. Weird.
  20. Hasn't been on WKCR for almost a month. Bird Flight being broadcast by students. Anyone know?
  21. Les Spann had also taught in the NYC system, but I haven't found any info about it. Gigi Gryce also taught chorus in the Bronx, under his Muslim name. Les Spann? I knew Les and it's hard to believe that unless it was years ago. Every time I saw him he was sitting with several beers and slightly disheveled in Washington Square Park. Sorry to tell tales out of school and I genuinely liked the man. Just can't see it. Matter of fact his friend told me he was really hurt when he said hello to Diz at the latter's concert in the park. "John Birks", he said, and Dizzy turned, eyed him, replied "That's exactly the condition you were in last time I saw you" and stormed off.

    Mundell Lowe

I'm glad for this thread. Haven't heard what Mr. Lowe sounds like lately, but I would be inclined to disagree with SGcim and Jim R. At 93 it's hard to say, though. There's some excellent stuff from back in the day on youtube. Look for Art Ford's Jazz Party. He should be on some of those.

    Bob Mover

Glad to see this thread. He's an old and dear friend, living in NY, and still playing very well at 63.
  24. Let me add a belated but sincere RIP to a great musician and man.
