The most bizarre place you bought Jazz in
sidewinder replied to White Lightning's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I once bought a Mingus Tijuana Moods reissue and a Parker 'Summit Meeting at Birdland' in a small fire/liquidation place that only lasted a few weeks. Both LPs had burn marks at the back and soot inside but the vinyl was OK. -
Have a great day, Laton !

The most bizarre place you bought Jazz in
sidewinder replied to White Lightning's topic in Miscellaneous Music
There's a place I use here in the UK that deals in three extreme fetishes only. Sci-Fi memorabilia, wall-mounted autographed photos of film and TV stars and modern jazz vinyl. -
I believe that the first 1000 copies of this box were signed on the inside front cover by Mr 'Boxman' Koyama and included the Lennie Tristano EP. These are probably likely to fetch a premium. For price comparisson purposes my box workedout about £135 in mint so that's around $200ish. I don't think it had even been played. I figured I had a pretty good deal for one of the '1000' in mint so if you can get it for $200-$250 in that condition you are doing well. Great set !

The Complete Capitol.... Stan Kenton
sidewinder replied to ASNL77's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I like the set too - as mentioned above it is very well recorded for the period and is chock-a-block with great West Coast soloists. Makes a nice combo with the Kenton/Holman/Russo set and sounds particularly good on the Q-LP version (attention : DrJ ). I think the CD version of the Kenton set was also sold at outlets such as Tower, as well as directly from Mosaic themselves. I really don't listen to this set enough so a good reminder to put it in the 'pending' area. -
Now playing Art Blakey 'Orgy In Rhythm Vol 2' (BN 47W63, no DG).
-
Gerald Wilson Orchestra 'Eternal Equinox' (World Pacific). Interesting to hear this one on the vinyl format as distinct from the Mosaic CD. Jean Luc Ponty is just doing his modal fiddling thing on 'Scorpio Rising'..

Thanks, spinlps. I'm glad that I remembered your post when I saw this one at the JRC. Haven't even opened it yet as there's other stuff to try out that I picked up in NYC but am looking forward to this one. The great Mr Kiyoshi 'Boxman' Koyama did some mighty fine vinyl sets, of which this one and the Keynote are prime examples.

I would have included 'Zoltan' from 'Unity'

More Kirk. This time 'Slightly Latin' (Limelight, original stereo). Really like this album, can never work out why it keeps on getting a lukewarm rap. Sound of the LP is also most noticeably better than that on the Mercury CD box.

Mr Ripley Chet Baker Richard Carpenter

At least one of the Commodore Mosaics (after vinyl-to-CD transfer) or maybe a Keynote box?

Up again with this thread. I remembered the thread when I saw the set last week at the Jazz Record Center in NYC. Have acquired the set (which also has the EP) and look forward to spinning it over the next few days. Looks to be in mint.

Just won the Curtis Fuller Mosaic LP set on eBay
sidewinder replied to DrJ's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Nice score ! I don't have the Fuller on vinyl but the Q-LP sets I do have are great listening. If this one is up to the standard of the Thad Jones, Jackie McLean, Sam Rivers and Horace Parlan then you will be impressed. The Fuller is of course full of very fine material and some of the original LPs are hard to find (Bone 'n' Bari for example) so this is a good one to get. I wish Joe of Euclid had brought along some of these LP sets in his boxes at the New Jersey Record Bash last week.. -
'Love, Love' and 'Trance' are two favourites of mine in the German vinyl version. I'm suprised to see 'Love, Love' listed as there was some mention in the past of the master tapes being in pretty lousy shape. 'Polarization' needs to be in their next batch of reissues. That one is a beauty.

Ken McIntyre ''Way 'Way Out' (United Artists stereo) ...hey, I'm a Funketeer !

Need a rec on a very good guide-book for Paris
sidewinder replied to Dmitry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Definitely the Time Out guide. I've just used the NYC edition yet again and it did the trick nicely. -
Michael - you are correct, it was McBrowne. There was another track played with Jarvis on drums during the discussion with Bertha, hence the name mix. I'm trying to recall the name of the Vancouver club - was it 'The Cellar'? (sounded something like this).

Scott of Mosaic mentioned that they are also working on an LP release to coincide with this. ( )

33rd Annual Jazz Record Bash-South Plainfield, NJ
sidewinder replied to Dmitry's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Quick post-return update. I made the 'bash' on the Friday morning. Scott of Mosaic was there with a nice stall selling 'promo' Mosaics at 20% discount and some regular sets (including Selects) at 10% discount. There was also a nice selection of partial OOP sets at $5 per CD. Most of the stalls were dealers of 78s and it looked to be 'de rigeur' to bring along your portable turntable to check out the shellac before purchase. Some amazing stuff by the look of it but not really my particular scene. Joe from Euclid was also there with several boxes of modern jazz goodies from his store. Chatting with Scott he confirmed that Mosaic are looking to bring out a 1-LP 'set' of this new Coltrane/Monk material, to coincide with a forthcoming CD ( ). By all accounts it would also seem that the late 'run' of sales on the Byrd /Adams set also took everyone by suprise up in Stamford. As for the journey, the drive in the pimpmobile was quite 'exciting'. -
Listened to most of that Elmo show en route to Newark yesterday. It included an interview with Bertha Hope, who gave some fascinating and very erudite insights into the circumstances of the music. Bertha also did a very nice gig at the Marriott Brooklyn (solo and quartet) on Friday night which I was fortunate to catch (quartet - Bertha Hope, Roni Ben-Hur, Walter Booker, Leroy Williams). Too bad that there wasn't better attendance from the NYC area though. Of particular note - that radio show also included an excerpt from one of Bertha's tapes of a club gig Elmo did back in 1958 in Vancouver with Harold Land, Scott LaFaro and Clifford Jarvis.

Some good stuff in Academy today (first thing I saw was a Grachan Moncur 'Evolution' mono original for $20 - not mint but not bad at all) but my reaction in Jazz Record Center was . We have nothing in the UK that even compares with this. Scored two Tal Farlow mint Norgrans (incredible), a Japanese Mercury box with the Brownie EP, a Ken McIntyre United Artists 'Way Way Out' and a few other items such as Gerald Wilson's 'Eternal Equinox'. That place is unbelievable - the jazz equivalent of a candy store. You could lose a week or three in there.
