  1. How's Andrew's playing on the soprano? This thread has me salivating so in the meantime whilst awaiting shipment will have to reaquaint myself with the 'One For One' 2LP set. Always liked that session with the strings !
  2. The Bob Cooper/Bud Shank 'Blowin' Country', if you can find it. Came out as a 'West Coast Classic' as part of that limited series of Conns.
  3. Metronome presents 'Jazz in the Garden at the Museum of Modern Art', Japanese Warwick. Teddy Charles/Mal Waldron collaboration with Bookers Little and Ervin ( ). Just listening to Ervin's 'Scoochie'.
  4. That's the spirit ! B-) They must have a skip full of these Tal sets at caiman HQ. Just hope that the 'troth floweth freely' for a little while let (I guess they will hit 10,000 at some point).
  5. I must admit, I'll only believe this one for sure when I see it standing on my doorstep. quote: "Never, in the history of Mosaics, were so many black boxes dispatched far and wide to so many for so few dollars" Winston.
  6. I saw a copy of the Green CD set in London a few weeks ago for about £100. I passed as I have the LP set. It had gone the next time I checked in.
  7. They sure do ! I have rarely seen a more enthusiastic audience at a jazz concert, the place was packed. After this concert at the Bath Fest the audience for the follow-on concerts then thinned out considerably and the average age went up by 10 years or so !
  8. They very occasionally do promotions - usually 10% off or free shipping. Of course the 20% off of LP sets that they did some years ago is still legendary ...
  9. I'm wondering if we'll see the same thing happening with the Euro Eldridge and Jazztet sets in due course. My bank manager will be happier..
  10. I don't have any of their albums but I did see them at the Bath Festival last year and enjoyed it, they were very professional. Great presentation and attention to detail - sort of reminded me of the MJQ in that respect..
  11. They are located somewhere in the San Fran area I believe. Great company, love that '4Men With Beards' vinyl !

    Phil Nimmons

I think Oscar Peterson produced these Nimmons Verves. I saw a copy of 'The Canadian Scene' in Mole Jazz a while back and nearly sprung for it.
  13. Just had my notification from Mosaic ! Andrew Hill and Woody Herman Capitol going transatlantic bound...
  14. Sal - from Hemel you could look at places in the Chilterns such as Aylesbury and the Beaconsfield area. Some pretty nice villages and small towns around there and within booting distance from London for the occasional jazz. It's to the SW of Hemel. A bit further afield and to the East and NE of Hemel you have the countryside in Suffolk, which Bev mentioned earlier. Much quieter than London and picturesque - a lot of Londoners have second homes up there or have decamped permanently. The problem I think with areas to the West such as Bath would be getting through London on the train. I suspect that you would have to get to Paddington then tube to Euston or Kings Cross for the Hemel train. A logistic nightmare. North and East of London is probably best for this location.
  15. 'fraid so... no talk of flat caps, whippets and mushy peas round here for a long time now
  16. and I'm a Northener who has been doing missionary work in the South since 1975 (really !)
  17. Bath is just about commutable from London (about 2 hours away by train, to the West). B-) Don't listen to those Northerners..
  18. BBC4 Listings For anyone in the UK Org fraternity who missed last week's broadcast (like those of us who were in the audience ) there's a repeat showing tonight at 1am on BBC4. The Sunday show is also being repeated on Saturday. Stand by with VCRs at the ready ! :rsmile:
  19. The current jazz scene here is the best that I have known in over 30 years. Comparable with the 'blip' in the mid/late 80s but with more substance, if anything. Sad to recall that some of the greatest music recorded back in the early to mid 70s (by Mike Westbrook, John Surman, Neil Ardley, Ian Carr etc.) was recorded/promoted amidst a scene of pretty well total public indifference. Acker Bilk and Kenny Ball were the limits of most people's jazz awareness. Hopefully events such as the great 'Jazz Britannia' festivities will further promote the present very welcome renaissance ! B-)
  20. Very pleased to hear this !
  21. On the plus side the UK jazz scene is on a particular high at present with some very good young players on the scene and overdue recognition for the older masters - lots of good festivals all over the place too. The best US players are also visiting in droves so you shouldn't feel deprived !
  22. Stand by to pay £ for $ for pretty well everything. Coming back to the UK after years in North America I found it an expensive experience, having said that there are lots of good things over here. The place is (and always was) mad as **** but that's part of the charm. The London area is totally ridiculous in terms of property prices, less so elsewhere in the South but still pricey by international standards. Herfordshire (where Hemel is) is a pretty afluent area - some ugly dull towns (hello Luton) but also some nice countryside to the North and East of there which should be accessible (places like Baldock and Hitchin). St Albans would be well worth a look - lots of history there (pre-Roman and Roman no less) and at least one jazz dealer that I know of ( ) but again, pricey in terms of property. Central London of course is full of life but expect to have your pockets emptied big time. Don't let me put you off ( ) - good luck with this and hope it works out well !

    Tony Coe

'Zeitgeist' (the large group album with lineup including Kenny Wheeler and co.) is the one to get. Unfortunately it is long OOP and rare (don't think it has been put out on CD). Coe's most ambitious work, musically. There's also a nice ECM LP with Norma Winstone and John Taylor called 'Somewhere Called Home'. I remember seeing this band around the time the LP came out.
  24. I've also just received confirmation that the Farlow has now shipped.. The DVDs I ordered took about 4 days to cross the 'oggin and at about £5 a shot are one heck of a deal. Worth that just to see Sun Ra and co. circa 1979 blasting away and 'calling to planet Earth' on the top of that Philly hotel.. B-)
