Saw Eddie Henderson and Gary Bartz last night at a one-off gig at the Exeter Phoenix, after their 2 shows at Jazz Cafe, London over the weekend.
The gig was set up by Soul Brother Records and much of the material was drawn from the two anthologies of these guys put out by this label.
Astonishing stuff. Bartz was playing with incredible drive and groove. Henderson was in fine 'Mwandishi' form with wah-wah pedal and delay lines in action. Quite a bit of stuff played from the 'Capitol' anthology ('Amarosso', in particular, being superlative). Both of these guys can really deliver on this stuff.
Soom good vocals from Bartz too, on 'I've Known Rivers', 'Celestial Blues' and several others.
Soul Brother also had a trade stall set up, where you could buy autographed copies of the 2LP or CD format 'Anthologies'.
Great stuff !
