Ian fluffing the intros on the ‘with strings’ second session on CD2 is a classic. Surprisingly, there seems to be an extra track (a very good NJO-type thing) by just the jazz group after the intros which is not mentioned in the booklet listing and which presumably was not broadcast but was recorded.
Presumably also the sessions credited to the Temple Music archive were from master copies given to Barbara and Jon by the BBC Engineer? Whatever is the case, the sound is first rate and the mastering job done for this set also excellent.
An absolute cornucopia !
Be glad that the vaccines are even being made available - 1 dose or two. Some poor souls on this planet aren’t even getting one. Those are the people who get all my sympathies.
An authority on early jazz, especially New Orleans and Ragtime. His concerts were hugely entertaining and immaculately performed. The ‘Midnight Follies Orchestra’ and the ‘Blue Devils Orchestra’ were two prominent ones - the latter band I saw quite a few times and was much impressed with - arguably the best band of its type in Europe.
Some of these idiots think the world revolves around them and that they can get a jab and then head off on holiday to Spain etc. Makes me sick ! Fortunately, most people are being patient.
Pretty sure I saw him with ‘Brass Project’. Certainly also saw him with Kenny Wheeler’s Big Band, Gil Evans UK Orchestra and Don Weller I think. Oh - and Stan Tracey’s Orchestra too. Never saw him with Westbrook though.
Keith Nichols a major loss as well, in the more traditional era of jazz. Excellent band leader and pianist/arranger.
Just read the awful news on London Jazz News that both trombonist Malcolm Griffiths and pianist/arranger/bandleader Keith Nichols had both passed away (Nichols apparently due to covid).
Good memories of stellar performances from both these fine gents over the years. Truly sad news, may they RIP.
I think I saw that film at one of the London Scala cinemas back in the day, in the era when they used to do ‘Jazz Film Seasons’ with 2-3 films in one sitting. Rhapsody Films figured quite strongly. I think it might have been on with that Bill Dixon film.
Relatives of mine have already had the jab (in one case, both) and once I get the call, I will be in there. 400,000 vaccinated in this country yesterday, so things are moving.
