  1. Hi David - Thank you for your confirmation of the Both/And and the sonics for the forthcoming set. Very much looking forward to it ! The 3CD set came out in 1996 I think, I bought mine at the time of release (and was overjoyed when it came out). I remember seeing it for sale well into the early 2000s so it had a decent run.
  2. That box looks full of good stuff and will be tempting. Will pick up the book, for sure.
  3. An exceptional month for Barbara Thompson fans. Not only does she have her autobiography published but there’s also a box set 14CD issue of her BBC recordings. https://barbara-thompson.co.uk/product/barbara-thompson-live-at-the-bbc/
  4. Yeah, I didn’t know of this one before either. It’s very enjoyable - last time I saw Kirk he did a nice trio version of his ‘Habiba’ too. Great composition.
  5. A classic. As if by magic - on page 3 of this..Lou’s Sammich
  6. Good as the sound of the 3CD Blue Note Box was/is, things have moved on since then. This set will be a great temptation when it sails into view - and I suspect not just to me. The Fresh Sound material sounds to me, sonically, like a total different location to the ‘Lighhouse’ - presumably the ‘Both/And’. With regard to the vinyl version - I hope/wish they would use London-based Gearbox in the same manner as for that Universal Tubby Hayes set. I guess it would likely be RTI or Optimal though.
  7. ‘The Indo-British Ensemble’
  8. Wasn’t it S. Wales? Hardly Outer Mongolia - although I guess they have been locked down of late.
  9. I remember the Norah Jones blowup. Generated a lengthy thread before the eventual implosion, as I recall.
  10. This year’s festive disk from Trunk Records. Great !
  11. I remember the transfer over to this board being quite sudden, with a ‘roll call muster’ once things had stabilised. Someone (mjazzg?) mentioned conversing with Bev S. within the last couple of weeks.
  12. That’s my recollection as well. Probably long since retired from the submarine service by now.
  13. I also bought that ‘Blue Spirits’ with the long box, in 1989 - but didn’t keep the box. One of my very first BN CDs, still have it.
  14. One of my Aunts (also in the North) has also already had jab no. 1.
  15. I remember seeing Claude Williamson do a solo piano set in the late 1990s. Enjoyable, very low key.
  16. We get free prescriptions from 60, with medical treatment already covered. A welcome bonus !
  17. New mutant strain detected by the genome sequencers, approx. 70% more transmissible than the original. Running rampant in London and the SE, new Tier 4 lockdown controls in those areas from tonight. No travel in and out of Tier 4. Xmas festivities cancelled.. Big tightening of controls in Scotland and Wales from tonight too. Happy to still be in Tier 2, for how much longer - who knows.
  18. That Blue Note Bulletin Board seems like another era. I think I was still using a Compuserve account on a dial up modem, running up phone bills..
  19. One of the benefits of having Xmas Hols coming up is that one can dip into fine box sets such as these two. I don’t play the Johnny Smith anywhere near enough.
  20. LP3 side 2 is good..
  21. Yes, he emigrated to Australia some years back and sadly passed on over there. I always think of him, Max Harrison and Charles Fox as being the major jazz ‘gurus’ over here back in the day. I have a few review copy LPs initialled on the back by him for the ‘Gramophone’ magazine in the early 1960s.
  22. Looks like ‘The Old Gits Club’ from the poll (including me). Can we all come along and claim our free carton?
  23. This is a big shock. He was playing fantastically well at that Strata East London concert several years ago (2016?) and looked in good shape then. RIP, a great talent and a very nice guy by all accounts. His ‘Maybeck’ is one of my favourites in that series. Superb.
