  1. I remember him having at least one disco hit in the late 1970s - at least over here.
  2. Is that Billy Root on the tenor? I have the feeling that he was in a Gillespie Tribute Orchestra I saw in LA in the late 1990s. The lineup in that band was quite an eye-opener.
  3. LP1 - sounding great, thankfully. One of the releases of the year for sure. The Bennink/Jacobs team is excellent. LP2, Arnhem - Sonically obviously compromised but Sonny in incendiary form, Bennink wonderful. Very listenable, in a ‘Dean Benedetti’ sort of way. Love it !
  4. The story about it is in the book. The drawing of Evans by DSM was held by Cynthia Sesso of CTS Images, released for use on this release by Zev F.
  5. The way he anchors ‘Trenton Place’ case in point. I’ve ordered ‘Free Flight’. Some negative reviews about the sonics on this recording from various quarters but the music sounds damn good to me !
  6. London Jazz News has done a nice writeup. Fascinating story about Joe Henderson seeking Ron out in NYC: https://londonjazznews.com/2020/12/04/rip-ron-mathewson-1944-2020/
  7. Thanks for that. I have the Ray Warleigh from this archive, definitely worth hearing too. I think I also caught Ron live with ‘Paz’, also the subject of one of those archive releases.
  8. Predictably great !
  9. Very sad news. The last time I saw him was decades ago at Scott’s in the Ronnie Scott Quintet, always a great player. Jazz In Britain have recently been issuing some of his old tape archive. RIP.
  10. Not unusual for Schlitten era Prestige LPs. Most of the ones I have are pretty short.
  11. With the harder PVC outers, seam split covers usually display OK. I’m usually wary on adding tape to what are quite often delicate old cover arrangements.
  12. Play them? They need to be left on display in their Holy Shrine and given votive offerings daily...
  13. When this happens I put the LP cover in one of those PVC sleeves and store the LP and inner outside the cover and inside the sleeve at the back (if that makes sense).
  14. If I recall, they fine tuned their technique as the series went on. The early ones were fine though. They introduced a new demand-driven pricing model sometime back, I believe, for the 45rpms which are still in stock.
  15. 1979 or early 80 was the first time I saw Blakey as well, I think. Recollections are hazy but Bill Hardman might have been on trumpet but Watson and Schnitter were there. They played quite a bit from ‘Gypsy Folk Tales’.
  16. Nearly fell off my chair when I saw the advert for it in their school mag ! It was definitely in a school hall and though intended for the kids the gig was open to the wider local community. Maybe Joe had friends locally who set it up as an add-on to one of his German tours? Ticket cost - would have been about 5 or 6 DM. Sadly, the gig had been and gone a week or two by the time I saw it. I don’t think Joe Henderson had done any gigs in the UK for some time either, which made it even more incredible at the time. I even started wondering if it was a different Joe Henderson involved. Maybe Joe ‘Piano’ Henderson of Ronnie Scott’s fame..
  17. In the early 1980s Joe Henderson did at least one gig in a school hall in a small Southern German town. I saw the advertising blurb - extremely low key and not much admission charge. Effectively a school concert. Sort of like a Joe H. version of ‘Palo Alto’ I guess.
  18. Yes, I don’t think the Music Matters 2x45s were SRX. In my experience, they got even better as the series matured.
  19. Damn. I think I’ve heard it before but goodness knows when or where..
  20. Is track 13 Sonny Fortune from one of the A&M Horizon albums ?
  21. Track 4 - Don Ellis ‘Johnny Come Lately’ from the Pacific Jazz ‘Essence’ LP.
