I can recommend the Neil Ardley. Viv Ardley did a nice job and there are interesting artefacts and photos covering the many aspects of Neil’s life. It is a lovely tribute to what by all accounts was a very talented and thoroughly decent guy. I also contributed some material in my collection to the appendices. 🙂 The two bonus CDs also have rare and very interesting music from Neil’s collection. Roger’s critical discography is also great. I’m tempted to buy it just for the bonus CD, even though the various editions are overflowing in my bookcase.😂 Sorry for the damage to your bank account. Mine will be suffering too !

No problem - needless to say, I will be ordering this. As with the Neil Ardley book it comes with a couple of bonus CDs. Debating whether or not to order (board member) Roger F’s Ian Carr critical discography, 3rd Edition. Thanks to Roger I have the first 2 - maybe he can advise if the changes merit going for the 3rd Edition?🙂 Being overseas born probably doesn’t rule Wheeler out from inclusion, as John Mayer was born in India I think. I suspect though that as Heining mentions that the 6 ‘came into jazz in the 1960s’ that would rule out Kenny, who came into the music in the 1950s.

The years I was resident over there I always wanted to see him but I don’t recall him touring outside of Quebec. Shame ! He definitely adds a bit of spice to Mobley’s ‘Third Season’.

This one sounds excellent, from the samples. Just about to order. I recognise the first (very catchy) track, ‘G.R.S’ (I think), from a radio theme tune many decades back. One of the BBC Radio jazz shows used to use it as theme music I recall. I think it was the ‘Jazz In Britain’ show which used to go out at some ungodly hour of the night, with no repeats that I recall. Over the years I’ve often wondered where that track came from. An additional plus is that this one has been very well recorded. Looks like they ripped from one of the original vinyl LPs. Additional bonus - Duncan Heining’s new book covering 6 major British jazz figures of the 60s and 70s is just up for preorder.

CDs 7-10

Sounds like Vienna back then was a wee bit different to here. Most people my age had never heard of Miles Davis. The aspiration was either to wear loon pants and doc martens or jean jackets with Motörhead on the back !

Les Spann ! I was watching film clips last night of him on the Quincy Jones DVD. A somewhat undersung and unique musician. Quincy astutely filled his band with quite a few players for whom similar could be said - Julius Watkins, Budd Johnson, Melba Liston, Joe Harris.

Following up CD3 with a viewing of Jazz Icons Live in Belgium and Switzerland 1960. What a band !

I have the feeling that I caught McCoy in Canada at the time ‘Remembering John’ came out and bought the CD at the time, his most recent issue. Can’t recall details of the band but it must have been the trio with Sharpe and Scott, by that stage pretty stable. Bought the ‘Supertrios’ twofer when it came out. Tony Williams’ drums were so over-powering that I was worried for the health of my speaker cones, particularly on ‘Moments Notice’.

CD2 - ‘Birth of a Band’

I saw all those groups too - in my case at Ronnie Scott’s. For the first group, Joe Ford was in place of Gary Bartz on alto. Lee and Fletcher also present in the band. John Blake in his disco-friendly white suit. Next time I saw him was with the trio and I had the feeling it was Tootie Heath on drums but it may have been Hayes. Certainly, the next time with the trio was with Sharpe and Scott, who I saw a number of times. The last couple of times I saw McCoy was with Eric Gravatt, at NorthSea and Bath. McCoy looked pretty frail at that last Bath Forum concert. Spot on ! He was great.

Enjoying the first episode so far. It seems to follow the text of the Michelle Mercer book in general and indeed, Michelle is interviewed quite a bit. Alan Shorter crops up on the childhood animation scenes. There are scenes of Wayne with string orchestra - I wonder if this was from the performance I saw at The Barbican, London, circa 2017? Wayne’s outfit looks the same as the one that evening and the orchestra looks to be similar to my recollection.

Seems to have missed us completely in Southern bits of the UK and blown across the North to your neck of the woods. Looking outside my patio door neighbouring cats are sunbathing..😋

Just a coat in my case. Ties are gathering dust.. CD7 - What a great sounding set this is, way better than previous issues I’ve heard (including my old JATP LPs). Really captures the live atmosphere too.

Thanks. If it is there, it is literally right at the start. Either a bump or dip in the vinyl. Nothing major - but annoying !

Does it have a pressing fault at the start of side 1? Many of them pressed seem to have this.

Sad news - RIP. I remember seeing his name mentioned as promoter at a Maynard concert I saw (Fairfield Halls, Croydon) and of course he figures strongly in the Bill Birch book. Relatives of mine caught some of his Southport shows e.g. Stan Kenton in the 70s. Indeed it would ! I wonder who is on these?

Funnily enough, I remember seeing Rich and Co. play the ‘West Side Story’ Medley when I saw them in 1980.

I Red/purple mono pressing. Interesting progression from ‘Blue Spirits’. I wonder at what time Hubbard came under the management of the late Clarence Avant and whether or not this led to the more commercial direction?

Yes, I have ‘The Kicker’ on the Conn CD as well. Nothing profound but very enjoyable, like lots of Blue Notes of this type. It deserved a release at the time it was recorded. Sound is better than the Conn - significantly so, lovely and clear. I was playing the LP of that one recently. The first track (‘Shell Game’) is a cracker. Ed Soph on drums is outstanding.
