  2. Shocked to hear this - although shouldn't have been. Just on the radio yesterday morning Tony Bennett was talking about his new 'Duets' album and said that he had great fondness for Whitehouse as a singer and as a person and was very worried for her health. I think her Aunt Cynthia (or was it Great Aunt?) was a fiance of Ronnie Scott so there were big jazz vibes in that North London family. Such a shame that the recent rehab didn't have any success. What a great shame, RIP.

  4. I've had that HMV album (CSD 1605) since 1971. You're just catching up with me, Sidewinder! (Must give it a spin) This one is CLP 1869, Bill. An original from 1965, I think - with the Garrard and Lofthouse sleeve. Sounds very good indeed in the mono, nice balanced sound. Will be comparing it with the US first press on Impulse that I also have (stereo). I also have a UK ABC/Impulse 70s reissue but that doesn't come up to the sonics of the HMV, good though it is.

  8. Yes, sad news, RIP - I recall that Jay Landesman passed away recently too. I remember the BBC doing an interview with her and getting her recollections of the Bob Dorough collaboration that resulted in the track on Miles Davis' 'Sorcerer'. That was the first time I came across her name.
  9. I was listening to those 'Miles Miles Miles' tracks tagged on to the end of the 'We Want Miles' CDs in the 60CD big box set and to be honest, I thought they didn't come up to the standard of the 'We Want Miles' issued material. A disappointment !

  11. That must have been the same week they (the same double bill) played the RFH in London (or was it Hammersmith Odeon?). According to Ian Carr's 'Miles Davis' bio the audience was very divided with the Shepp cohort performance. Half were mesmerised by it, half walked out (or retreated to the bar).
  12. That Woody Herman track must have been from the Roulette 'At The Round Table' release. Morris Levy sure got his money's worth with his propagation of these tracks. No - that's the pictures of Hank in the Nica 'Three Wishes' book. Glad I had another perusal of that book in the last few days. Looks like one of those photos is of Hank in a front line with Woody Shaw.
  13. Great stuff. That 'Chicken Shack' looks just like the real thing ! Some off-beat selections here. Notably 'Take Aim' and 'Oblique'.

  15. Pretty well the same up here - colder than would normally be expected. The usual settled weather pattern has not materialised this year and Atlantic fronts have prevailed. Sucks !
  16. All the best !
  17. I'm sure I've seen it around at less than £10 recently. Might have been at good ol' Fopp. Great Tubby album ! Not worth it IMO , sound of the CD is poor as I'm sure was discussed here at the time of its release. Yes, I also find the sound a bit lacking, but the music!!! Re sound, I spend quite a bit of time listening to bop sides from the 40s in comparison with which the Tubby is super hi-fi No qualms about the sound on the LP. Both the mono and stereo versions are great ! I thought the concerns re: CD sound were with '100% Proof' and 'Mexican Green' but it sounds as if the whole lot must have been compromised. I suspect that the Japanese Digipacks are better - the one I have of 'Tubbs Tours' is fine.

  19. Damn - passed on that one at £5 the other day. The Rocky Boyd is good, I agree..

  21. Isn't the Universal CD still available at around £9.99?
  22. That's how I remember it - I bought it for a few years in the late 70s. Quite surprised to see Mike Stern on the cover. Warren Vaché was more their style (no axe to grind against the latter, by the way!). I had a subscription through the 70s and into the early 80s. Used to pick it up regularly then until the early 90s and beyond. From the 00s onwards it had got too low on the modernist content for my liking and rarely bought it - it was especially weak around 2008/9/10. This year has seen an upward turn in quality though, IMO. Some of the 'Jazz Review' ethos has rubbed off I think.
