No kidding - that one is brilliant ! The Kirchin Band was a medium sized group with his Dad, Ivor. Sort of covered Ted Heath-ish showband territory but with some very good jazz soloists.

Yes, I've already got the Garrick's Fairground, Rendell, Shake Keane and Tony Crombie.. but have just filled my boots with the two Kenny Bakers, Thad Jones, Stan Butcher, Ray Russell, Garrick DVD, Martin Drew/Tony Lee, Eddie Thompson and of course the Kirchins. Vocalion packing department will be busy tomorrow. Shake Keane - Easy listening-ish and not a patch on the Harriott stuff but good fun and strangely adictive ! Rendell - no brainer. Garrick - it's choral (may be a plus or minus) but an important Argo album and definitely worth getting.
  4. Don't, whatever you do, head over to the Vocalion thread...

Great little sale - but the price of the Garrick 'Poetry and Jazz' has actually gone up !
  6. Many thanks - I've been thinking about that Garrick DVD and £2.99 is a steal. Typical that the Harry Beckett is reduced just after I bought it. Good opportunity to pick up those Kenny Bakers, the Stan Butcher, the Kirchins and 'Turn Circle'.

  8. I remember her very well, she had one hit after another in the U.K. in the early 1960s. She was a great singer, she really stood out among other British pop singers of the pre-Beatles era. Some time ago I saw an interview with her, I think it was on the BBC. She did quite a bit of touring with Humphrey Lyttleton's band from the 1980s onwards and switched to a much jazzier style. I always thought Whinehouse was more like Alma Cogan than Helen Shapiro though.

  11. Yes, Amy Winehouse had 'Cynthia' tatoo-ed on her upper right arm so she was obviously very influential with her. There's quite a bit about Cynthia Gordon, plus a photo taken with Scott (age 16), in the Ronnie Scott biography written by Scott's daughter Rebecca.

  15. You are doing quite well on this front. It used to be just astronomical. Now it is mythical !
  16. Steve Voce's vendetta against the banjo back in the 1970s was a good laugh though..
  17. Yes - right at the end of 'Haunted Ballroom Part 2'.
  18. Looks suspiciously like the Mermaid Theatre in Soho !
  19. Oh damn, what a shame. It was only at the weekend that I was giving his Nippon Columbia 'Giant Steps' LP several spins and marvelling at just how brilliant it is. Frank Foster never got enough credit for his consumate professionalism - and was a consistently fine and under-rated tenor and soprano soloist, both small groups and big bands. The 'Giant Steps' and 'Manhattan Fever' LPs will be going on deck tonight..

  23. That would be me then. Too much drama out there yesterday. The Dorset Air Ambulance helicopter landed in the field opposite about 100 feet away from the front door. Fortunately the inquisitive cows who galloped in to check it out were shooed away.
