  1. I remember seeing him on TV in the mid-70s with Clark Terry's Big Bad Band (rare BBC aberation to show jazz) and even recorded it. Still have the C-60 somewhere !
  2. I'll go out on a limb and say 'New and Old Gospel' - certainly this session has left the greatest impact on me, although I need to go and revisit the likes of 'Love Call'.

  5. Happy Birthday !
  6. Absolutely - which is why he slotted in so well on the Buck Clayton Jam Sessions and sessions such as 'Jazz Studio 1'. In terms of stylistic flexibility, he reminds me very much of his contemporary, Frank Foster.
  7. Wasn't one of his early 'Was Not was' singles called 'Out Come The Freaks' (or something like that)? Showing my age there..

  9. Thanks for that - I was hoping that they would step up to the mark. Along with their great prices on the new Vocalions, Amazon UK offer some superb deals at present. No wonder all the brick and mortar stores are going bust.
  10. Buckmaster was managed by London-based agent/producer Tony Hall, who was friendly with Davis and introduced the two of them during one of Davis' UK visits (1969 I believe, must have been that visit when he played the London Jazz Fest. and the one (filmed, now lost) night at Ronnie Scotts). I've often wondered if, before those OTC sessions, Buckmaster played Davis his 'Chitinous' session recorded for Deram (reissued a few years ago on CD by Vocalion, now sadly sold out/OOP). The last track in particular has some of the repetitive, bass-riff driven brooding that permeates 'On The Corner'. Chitinous was released in 1971 I think. I remember seeing that Polanski 'Scottish Play' on film projector at school back in the day but of course never knew of any Buckmaster connection ! First and only time I've ever seen it.
  11. There's also the Japanese 'Blue Note Board Syndicate' version with the extra bonus CD with audience intro to Hank Mobley !
  12. She definitely has a Canadian look about her. Not that I'm any the wiser..

  14. Clue: an American better known to Brits like me than to Americans. I can't see the picture. Two pictures this time! Geoffrey Smith (BBC Jazz Record Requests)..
  15. Yikes - another fluke ! Anyone care to post a mystery photo?..

  21. Wow - never seen that one before !
  22. I have that Stitt Vogue Jazz Doubles too - it is like a super-condensed version of the Mosaic Box which starts with some of the Johnny Richards material. As for the 'two separate LPs with OBI' - the John Surman I have (Reissue of 'The Trio') is in this format. There's also a Charlie Ventura in this 'format' I seem to recall. BillF - that £6.75 Verve Twofer was definitely after the "big inflation" (hey - deja vu ). Around 1978/79 - the early ones were £3.99-£4.99 (or £2.99 with a corner cutout from Mole's or Honest John's deletion bin ). As for that 'West Coast Scene' Vol 3 - I've got the feeling I might even have it. Obviously it left such a profound impression on my that I forgot I even had it. Anyone mentioned yet the big CBS twofer reissue series? - ie. the multiple vols of Lester Young Story, Miles Plugged Nickel etc., Young Lions at Montreux etc.
