  1. Yeah - he was kind enough to sign a bundle of his Blue Note LPs I fortuitously had with me when I hijacked him from getting on the band bus ! Another one he did for me was an original. ‘Schizophrenia’ and a Japanese copy of ‘Speak No Evil’ I think. King pressing is nice - recommended. Giving the 3LPs of the Blue Note ‘Emanon’ Box a spin tonight.
  2. King Blue Note. Kindly signed on the back for me by Wayne.
  3. Yes, they were featuring tracks from the recent Enja album ‘Lotus Flower’ as I recall it. Certainly remember the title track of that one plus ‘Katerina Ballerina’ and ‘The Organ Grinder’ during their sets. Also recall a nice brass duet version of ‘All The Things You Are’ which they opened a set with. Band with Shaw was Turre, Miller, Stafford James and Tony Reedus. I guess Steve Turre must have been unwell when they played Bremen - he was in good form in London. Edited to say that I think the London gig was in early to mid Feb 1983. What I do remember is that it was damn cold !
  4. Yeah, it was the Quintet with Steve Turre and Mulgrew Miller. It was so good that I went back for a second night. Remember sharing a table with a couple of guys who had flown into London from Holland especially to see this Shaw group, such was his reputation. UK Columbia, mono. With a young Kenny Wheeler on trumpet/mellophone.
  5. Haven’t heard that one for decades but it’s good !
  6. Yeah, that’s why I got the 2CD version. Nice release though ! Looking at the recording date I actually saw Shaw with Quintet within days of that recording date. Same North European tour, presumably for Wim Wigt. French Milestone 2LP - Prime McCoy.
  7. Greetings and Happy Birthday Brownie !
  8. Missed the Dexter the first time round so might be interested in that one. I wonder if they will reissue the Dave Brubeck Studio set?
  9. Yep, that ‘Never Never Land’ 2CD is really excellent. I’m assuming that the recordings are recorded from BBC ‘Jazz In Britain’ and ‘Jazz Club’ sessions but the liner doesn’t make clear what the source is.
  10. Just picked up a copy of the Tone Poet - it will be interesting to compare with the Liberty original. Great that they did a TP of this one. Verdict - Original Liberty more exciting, more ‘omph’. Tone Poet more mannered, a bit more precise.
  11. Liberty blue/white, stereo
  12. Trumpeter Henry Lowther appeared with the band at that Woodstock performance and he’s still sounding good in live UK performances into his 80s.
  13. Some of those tracks e.g ‘Diaper Pin’ are also on the 2LP Helen Merrill ‘Mixes’ set which Bob Shad put out on Mainstream. Not sure on the credits on that one.
  14. I almost went for that JiP CD set when I saw it at the old J&R Music in NYC years ago but alas the baggage allowance ruled it out. Maybe just as well - that thing almost needs its own room !
  15. Obviously a bit of a joke played on Rob McConnell, somewhere in Toronto.
  16. Only £219 on Amazon !
  17. I think Basile was in that recent recreation of the Slide Hampton Octet organised by the original drummer’s son. Pretty impressed with that and his playing as part of it.
