  1. Sonet - Enjoying this one, better than I remembered it to be.
  2. Not sure. I guess that if they exist, ‘Jazz In Britain’ might be able to put them out - subject to approval of the Garrick Estate. The recent R&B Records from the 60s was an interesting one, well worth checking out.
  3. Absolutely. Then after ‘Troppo’ it went pretty quiet on the recording front until about 1980 and ‘You’ve Changed’ with Don Weller on the Hep label. Fortunately after about 1990 he did get to record more often but largely for his own label. In the ‘quiet’ period I do recall listening to occasional (annual?) late night broadcasts on BBC by his Sextet though. Wish I’d recorded them ! Thinking about it, The last time I saw Garrick perform was in 2010 I think, for the Ian Carr Tribute concert at QEH. He had his Sextet with Norma Winstone and Art Themen, plus Don Rendell guesting on a few numbers. The late Trevor Tomkins was on drums I think, plus Henry Lowther on trumpet. Will have to check.
  4. Well, in a moment of weakness I just capitulated on ‘Stick Up’ and ‘Steppin Out’ thanks to a well known UK site dropping its price so should get them tomorrow. 😊
  5. Those were the days ! The nearest that BBC Radio 1 gets to jazz these days is Taylor Swift.
  6. Bring back the days of £2 weekday student admission ! Best seating in the house for the youngsters per Ronnie’s instruction too ! I think it was about £35 midweek when I was last there a few years ago. Haven’t been tempted back by anything (it was pre pandemic). Last time I saw Charles Lloyd was in Cheltenham Town Hall but I also remember seeing him at Carnegie Hall at a Trane tribute which also had Elvin’s band and McCoy’s trio. Bobo Stenson was on piano I think.
  7. Fond memories of seeing that band, playing some of that album too. ‘Post Motown Bop’ another really good one.
  8. As Duncan Heining points out in the sleeve notes, the two Philips albums really deserve a reissue. This would have been a shoe-in for Dutton-Vocalion but they seem to have lost interest in jazz. Decca perhaps?
  9. Their two LP releases of 1964/5 - ‘Directions In Jazz’ and ‘Road To Ellingtonia’. Never reissued or released on CD.
  10. CD1 and some of CD2 were recorded in Germany for an NDR broadcast and are in good sound. A real find. This was a very under-rated group. Most of the musicians are no longer with us but I remember seeing Bill Le Sage in the early 80s with the ‘Bebop Preservation Society’. Johnny Scott is still living in the LA area I believe, having left for the film world many years before. Drummer Tony Carr, originally from Malta, is now in his early 90s and I remember seeing him in the late 2000s, can’t recall whose group it was but he was still playing great.
  11. I have the Sarah Vaughan Roulette and enjoy it. Not essential but very happy to have it. Sonics are very good.
  12. I had CD3 on this morning. ‘Light-Foot’ and ‘Midnight Sun’. Very enjoyable.
  13. Just listening to this one and I can recommend it. Sound is very acceptable for broadcasts of this vintage and there is fine playing from Ronnie Ross in particular. A great supplement to the Philips LPs.
  14. Now there’s an idea. A Viking-style longship a la Sutton Hoo full of LPs, CDs and Mosaics sounds good - and confuse future archaeologists.
  15. The only thing I’ve had to do with my Contour 1.8 Mk IIs is a slight tightening/torquing of the screws on the driver units, otherwise they are as good as the day they were bought, over 20 years ago.
  16. Thanks for posting that. There will be orgasms galore on the Hoff Board. 😂 It’s a good list. I’ll be picking up ‘Slow Drag’ and ‘Demon’s Dance’ for sure. For the rest I have either good originals or Japanese reissues so more debatable. ‘Mr Natural’ I have on the Stanley T. Mosaic box on CD and I think I might also have it on a ‘Jazz File’ vinyl. Will likely go for ‘Midnight Creeper’ as well, although I think I have it on CD (somewhere).
  17. I have a Freedom pressing of that one too. Sound is excellent !
  18. Nice one, neveronfriday. I too have some Dynaudio Contour 1.8 Mk 2s, which I keep on a second system. A lovely speaker and visually great too - a bit harder to drive though than the current Contour range but provided your power amp is up to it, not a problem. Congrats on your retirement - good for the listening time opportunities, for sure !
  19. First impressions from over here is that it is now significantly faster, especially when posting. Thanks !
  20. This has been released by ‘Progressive British Jazz’ aka Matt Parker as a limited CD release and sold out now I think. The origin is unclear but I’m assuming it is from an early 70s BBC broadcast. An important release I think, covering the period of the recordings ‘You Are Here...’ and ‘Dedicated to You...’ with the group including Nic Evans on trombone and Elton Dean on saxes. Note - I see from Bandcamp that a 2LP vinyl release is also forthcoming.
  21. Vertigo ‘spaceship’ label
  22. Freight costs on the 747 must have been off the scale.
  23. I’m inclined to agree. My view of Byrd hasn’t changed since ‘75-76 when I first heard this Byrd/Mizell stuff - catastrophic drop in quality into the 70s. Compared to stuff like ‘Slow Drag’ from a few years earlier, I lost interest. Not through lack of trying to like it though. That synth on the 2nd video sounds like a souped-up stylophone !
