  1. Need to order these. It’s worth ordering the CD set, the large format book and essay (with lots of pictures taken at the gigs) which holds the CDs is very well done. Simon Spillett’s very good essay covers the circumstances of the time with rampant inflation, power rationing and Cold War tensions. Hmmm - at least we ditched the brown carpets, flock wallpaper and Watney’s Red Barrel.
  2. CD1 of the 3CD set
  3. Got that one somewhere - must dig out. Kicking off several weeks hol with a back-to-back session of this set. Then I get to retire and free up even more listening time. I agree. Wish the Hoffman lot wouldn’t keep on referring to it as the ‘Wolfman’ cover though. No respect ! The Mosaic box is great, one I crack open on a regular basis. It is good that Gerald was still around when it was issued.
  4. Wow - superb !
  5. I’ve got the Hemphill on vinyl, will have to dig it out. Don’t do LP clearouts (but maybe I should) !
  6. Xmas comes but 3 times a year - Another spin for the Dukester.
  7. Yes. Also on one of the albums.
  8. Just been spinning this one again on vinyl - excellent. Victor Lewis’s ‘Seventh Avenue’ is always good to hear; when he was in Bobby Watson’s Horizon they used to feature that one too.
  9. Classic Series - wrong season but I don’t care. Have it on the Mosaic Select but good to have a nice sounding vinyl version.
  10. Looks interesting. I only know his work with Peter Leitch.
  11. Amazingly, have never heard this before. Superb - and at less than £5 for the French CBS reissue, a bargain.
  12. Yet more sad news. I saw him as a youngster with John McLaughlin in that ‘Free Spirits’ trio, must have been around 1993. Not sure if I saw him with Martino’s group. Very talented, for sure. RIP.
  13. Spinning a few disks from my collection of Verve Elites Verve Elite - one of the truly great jazz reissue series.
  14. I’m pretty sure that concert at The Rainbow was broadcast on TV by the BBC and I remember seeing it circa 1975 at original transmission but for sure I don’t recall it ever being shown again since.
  15. Another spin for this Blue Note Classic release - sounding very good.
  16. ‘Brighter Day’s For You’ was recently reissued on 180g vinyl and I have been enjoying it of late. It got very good reviews ‘back in the day’ and always regret not buying it at the time. Her LPs always seemed to be elusive over here though.
  17. I’ve only been once but there were a bundle of Mosaics on overhead display - alas, too heavy. There was also a box of collectible LPs including fine Norgrans and early Blue Notes. At the prices on offer (not cheap at the time but a bargain now) I should have filled my boots and paid excess baggage. I remember that Tower branch, on Broadway I think, which used to be a Sam Goody’s. That place was like a black hole - you could get lost for hours and never get out.
  18. To be fair to them, some of them seem to like Wallen Bink so all is not lost.
  19. According to WB’s Facebook page, it would have included alternate takes of ‘Illusion’, ‘Dance With Death’ and ‘Soul Special’. Malcolm Addey was originally involved in the mastering, apparently.
  20. This is sad news, I was just listening to her new Steeplechase release the other day and also to BBCs repeat of her feature on ‘JtoZ’ selecting favourite tracks, from last January, She sounded in good form - RIP.
  21. With regards to ‘Passing Ships’, my understanding is that Wallen Bink in London were originally working on this one and planning to reissue it themselves. In the end, Blue Note took over the project. The original plan was for side 4 to include additional music. Hoffman Forums = ‘Moonies’ (not Keith..)
  22. Ronnie Barker Shep John Noakes
  23. The Tone Poet thread reads to me like a bunch of guys discovering Blue Note LPs for the first time and going into communal ecstasy over it, with ‘n’ positive feedback loops hard-wired in. Maybe I could relate to it 40 years ago but now it is a bore. All those pics with their TP ‘platter du jour’ cover propped up in display holder next to turntable - snore.... The thread is useful to find out what is coming up on the release schedule though.
