John Coltrane - The Major Works of John Coltrane
sidewinder replied to Pim's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Probably give it a spin tomorrow ! Good to dig this set out again. It doesn’t deserve to be stuck in a cupboard. -

Yeah, definite shortfalls in the dynamics noticeable here. Having said that, I can live with this version I think - better than expected given the vintage. -

Giving ‘Om’ a spin now. I see what you mean about the piano - sounds beat up and out of tune. Probably related to the circumstances - this one was recorded at Jan Kurtis’s Lynwood home studio I think. Other than that, I don’t think it is too bad. Maybe sonically a bit muddy but that is probably a limitation of the recording facilities, perhaps. Crazy stuff ! A noticeable bit of top-end roll-off on these GRPs which is impacting the drums and percussion I think. Difficult to know if it is a remastering issue or a limitation of these recordings. -
Yeah, they do sound brilliant.

John Coltrane - The Major Works of John Coltrane

After some rooting through cupboards I found the set. ‘Ascension - Edition 1’ spinning now. Sounds OK so far, I remember buying this set in the early 90s and at the time these GRP Coltranes were just the job for me as most of my Coltrane vinyl was either UK 70s reissue or Jasmine pressings so it was a step up and I didn’t have Om or Kulu. My CD player these days is far better than the old kit so it may be ‘flattering’ the sound but so far so good. Perhaps a bit 2-dimensional in soundstage but that may be the recording - the detail is all there. Some shortfalls noted in the dynamics and transients for ‘Ascension’ though, especially Elvin’s drums. CDs were to improve considerably in this respect in later years. -
The discogs prices for those Disk Union LPs are indeed beyond lunatic !

By way of contrast..

Yeah, they weren’t cheap at the time but I recall paying about equivalent of £20 or so for Toshiba and £35-40 for Kings with shipping on top. The pound was healthy at the time so that took some of the sting away. Only ever bought Toshiba and King LPs, never bothered with the CDs. The LP lists were enough of a challenge for me. I used to look at his fantastic lists of US originals and salivate - beyond my pay grade !

A couple of items from my Hiroshi Tanno library, in remembrance. Toshiba with OBI. In immaculate condition as always and sounding great. Bonus voucher on the OBI to get Reuben Wilson ‘Love Bug’ ! I have a Liberty if this one and can’t recall it ever sounding so good. Will have to check. Another Toshiba - no OBI but again, immaculate.

Could hardly afford it when I did buy from Mr Tanno but it was such a pleasant experience, never any shipping problems and the boxes of LPs when they arrived were a joy to behold. Thank you Mr Tanno !

Albert Ayler 5LP set from Elemental for RSD (April 23)

The queuing is actually not so bad, at least at my regular haunts. The usual batch of local regulars to ‘shoot the breeze and catch up’. Assuming that is that the weather is behaving itself and not raining. The only issue with the queuing is that other shoppers wonder what is going on and look at you as if you are a zoo exhibit/curio ! I draw the line at queuing at 5am/6am as in some stores though - not that keen ! With the 500/750 runs on the Resonance titles no doubt we will be very lucky if we ever see them in the stores over here. Given this, I’ll be happy with the CDs - and at a third of the price too. Yes, I think there is something too that. At least one store that I know has commented that RSD keeps them solvent for the rest of the year. -

Based on my experience the shops order what they would like to sell from a set list and are basically given an allocation, sometimes just one or two copies. Then it is a question of queuing up on the day and hoping that you are near enough to the front to snag what you want. Failing that, order online from stores after 6pm and hope that someone still has what you are looking for in stock. Many stores give details of what they will be selling in online news before the day. -

I’ve got it but I haven’t listened to it for years. Don’t recall any major issues with it but maybe I’ll dig it out for a spin. -
Dipping into the Mosaic Box is a good option, if you have it. Personal preference would probably be ‘Genesis’ but they are all great. I also have a great liking for ‘At This Point In Time’ and that Lee Morgan session on ‘Prime Element’. Over here in Southern England we have been battered by very severe Atlantic storms, the worst in at least 30 years. So - a great opportunity for jazz vinyl listening this weekend, assuming your local electricity supplies aren’t cut off. Sadly, I don’t have fall back option of wind up gramophone. At the moment, I seem to be in a healthy area amongst a sea of outages, like quite a bit of the South. Italy sounding good at the moment.

I have a copy of that Feldman on Pacific Jazz as well - will see if I can find it, along with the copy of that Venezuelan curio he did.

Not Ayler but talking of the RSD event, this caught my eye - Recorded University of Alberta, 1972 -
Amazed to catch on BBC4 tonight a vintage 1961 performance by John Collins tonight as part of a Nat King Cole special put out by the BBC. Also in the backing group were trumpeter Reunald Jones and drummer Leon Pettis.

What rock music are you listening to? Non-Jazz, Non-Classical.

That looks like a wind-tunnel model for the Avro Vulcan (or one of its developmental offshoots). Presumably purloined from RAE Farnborough? -

I see there are only 500 to 750 copies for many of these forthcoming RSD sets, including the two new Bill Evans Argentinian sets. Ridiculous ! -
Freebie MPS selection CD from the latest issue of ‘Jazzwise’. Pretty good ! Good way to recover from today’s domestic storm destruction.

Really sorry to hear this, Hiroshi was an absolute gent and professional and his LPs live on in many collections to be treasured. RIP and thanks.
