  1. Sounds like it is either the King LP or Mosaic Grant Green/Sonny Clark set for that title on vinyl. ’Sweet Honey Bee’ tape loss not a total surprise but no mention of ‘Jody Grind’. Very Interesting interview !
  2. Up for this thread and the TV broadcast of ‘Original Peter’ by the BBC from 1970, with the Concert Jazz Band plus Norma Winstone. Totally bonkers but great ! Original Peter 1970 Where else can you see a Dave Holdsworth trumpet solo backed by a Punch and Judy show punch-up !
  3. Likely to be good sound. I think these were recorded for CBC broadcast at the time.
  4. Yeah, it’s a gem. One of his very best. Jimmy Garrison comes through very clearly on this version and there’s a very spacious sound to Elvin’s drums.
  5. The new Acoustic Sounds version. Probably better than the real thing.
  6. Canadian pianist and arranger who was based in Alberta and very active in Canadian broadcasting. Yes, that’s him. I saw him a few times, at least once backing Judi Singh I think.
  7. Soul Brother 2LP. Signed by Gary for me when he toured the UK for this release with them (with Eddie Henderson).
  8. Usually goes for around £100 in exc. nick these days, I think.
  9. Excellent Bergenfield NJ copy, mono.
  10. That Clark Terry album sounds sort of plausible ! As for Dick and Spiro - maybe ‘plays Gallivan and Young’?
  11. Timeless -not the Japanese version. Will have to check mine, can’t recall any noise issues although those CBS LPs of that era can be noisy.
  12. Careful selection is required with the pressings. Tone Poets and Acoustic Sounds Verve/Impulses are usually great - but priced accordingly. A fair amount of budget dross from dubious pressing plants out there. When vinyl is done correctly though and on the right equipment - hard to beat.
  13. Double prairie fires.
  14. Over here it’s just the old and vulnerable who are scheduled for a booster at this time. The rest of us later this year I guess. Last time I was in the office there were a number off sick with covid. Fortunately, I can limit my exposure.
  15. A great box - as is the ‘Nucleus at the BBC’.
  16. That’s a regular check every Spring. Boxes and booklets. Fortunately it wipes off easily.
  17. I usually end up drowning in it when I look on there. The worst is when Tone Poet threads turn into a discussion of road cycles and gear options.
  18. The context of the time as I remember it was that classic jazz of this type was pretty well dead in terms of LP releases so Pablo was a tonic in terms of what was commercially available. Here in the UK they got good distribution and could be picked up in most high streets in branches of WH Smith as distinct from rare expeditions into obscure London record shops impervious to the jazz non-believers. There were plenty in elder generations who were keen to snap up new Basie, Ella etc.
  19. Our equivalent in the UK was Rex Harris’s introductory book on ‘jazz’, which must have put thousands of people off.
  20. The CD555 is about the same vintage as the CD12 and presumably they were going after the same high-end audiophile market. Production stopped a few years ago but unlike Linn, Naim have put aside spare mechanisms for each player built. They also have a better pedigree when it comes to supporting their older kit, in fact I’m still running a 40 year old power amp on one of my setups, which just needs a recap every decade or so. Not to knock Linn, who make some absolutely superb kit and who themselves have transformed old LP12s with great upgrades over recent years (Keel, Urika, Karousel etc.) In your scenario porcy I would recommend a really good streamer with NAS drive etc. One thing I really do like about CD is no faffing about and I find these days I use it more than the turntable, strangely enough.
  21. Yes, you can open and close the lid via the remote or alternatively wave a hand next to the built in sensor. The lid even has a built in calibration facility which you can use if the lid mechanism ever goes out of kilter.
