Winston Churchill(and others) to be axed from British

Reminds me of a comment from one of these guys whilst sipping a coffee at the John O'Groats Hotel (I'd just completed the drive from Glasgow) as he poked his head into the dining room looking a bit lost. 'Is this the way to the dungeon?' -
I was able to run a check on both mono and stereo copies of the original Fontana LP. The stereo rocks but the mono sounded pretty damn good too. I wonder what they did with the CD?

Lovely album. The first part of an Ardley trilogy - with 'Symphony of Amaranths' and the later 'Kaleidoscope of Rainbows'. Neil is certainly missed from the UK music scene.

Just looking at my stash of 'Impressed' CDs right now, Highness - I think your list is complete. There's strong rumours of a third batch coming out from Universal UK towards the end of the year. Don't hold your breath - based on past comments from them. The titles I have heard mentioned are Harriott/D'Silva 'Hum Dono', Mike Taylor 'Pendulum', Neil Ardley 'Dejeuner Sur L'Herbe' and 'Symphony of Amaranths' and a couple of others I think whose titles elude me.. (I have the feeling one might be Don Rendell 'Space Walk' - his first LP after the Rendell/Carrs). What is really odd is that Sunbeam have just issued the Taylor 'Pendulum' on CD so why Universal choose to reissue it themselves is sort of bizarre (after the thing has been missing in action for 40 years 2 companies decide to reissue it simultaneously !). I would have picked it up but I think I'll hang on until Universal release it (or if Sunbeam issue it on vinyl). The 'Hum Dono', 'Pendulum' and 'Amaranths' were originally issued by Columbia in the Lansdowne Series on vinyl and are rare beasts indeed (especially the Harriott and the Taylor). The 'Dejeuner' was a very rare UK Verve issue - very fine orchestral session indeed with a version of 'Dusk Fire' and a fantastic 'Naima'. 'Amaranths' from 1971-ish also has a great collaboration with the late Ivor Cutler - 'The Dong With the Luminous Nose'. Hope Universal get their act together pronto on this lot.. Oh - and a Vol 3 of the Gilles Peterson is promised too. These are great and I recommend Vols 1 and 2 very much (fascinating sleeve notes with historical background essays too). PS - I've heard so-so reports regarding the sound on some of the Tubbs issues (one of them - '100% Proof' I think - is from a mono master not stereo) but having good LPs the only one I've picked up is the Costanzo. The sound on that one is pretty nice stereo. As you mention, the sleeve notes are microscopic - not the greatest. Having said that I keep seeing them for £5-7 each so they are a bargain.

Looks like a beer mat !

Got all 4 of them on the original vinyl (and the Conn 2CD) but 'Shoutin' (with BJP and Grant Green) and 'Texas Twister' on Riverside are my faves. Nothing very demanding/groundbreaking but very pleasurable listens.

That's what I thought at first as well. An old trackway, I think. -

But he was an American ! I'd take the source of this with a pinch of salt. The 'Sun' is a total shite newspaper. The Beano has more news in it. -
Bragging like that deserves some pictures! Sorry Erik - didn't take any. There was light rain for most of the day and lowish cloud cover so there was opportunity for some really spectacular shots of B-1Bs with condensation trails etc (indeed the view of this from the binoculars was spectacular). The USAF was well represented - F-117, B-1B, the usual F15s/F16s, Global Hawk and Predator on Static, even a trusty old B-52 from Minot (which had the dirtiest exhaust of the lot) ! Conspicuous by their absence this year - the Russians and Eastern-Block 'friendly' nations. The Czechs and Hungarians were flying though, I'm glad to say. Highlight though was the wonderful old Avro Lanc - plus the sight of a Hurricane plus 3 Spitfires in 1940s war paint flanked by the Red Arrows in 'V' formation with smoke tanks on. Now that was worth a photo. Eurofighter strongly in evidence from the RAF and the Spanish AF. That one can get airborne and manoeuvring in no time (compared with the F-16 the difference was startling). Sadly the rebuilt XH558 Avro Vulcan which was being brought back to an airworthy condition by volunteers and Marshall Aerospace hasn't yet got it's flight clearance so couldn't participate as planned. It's been too long since the Vulcan was flying over our airspace.. Sorry - back to Northsea..

Interesting, Durium ! Glad to hear that the crowds were not so inpenetrable between gigs as last year (that got a bit scary at times). Would have liked to have been there but the military fast jets at the International Air Tattoo at Fairford won out this year.

That Jazz Icons DVD has some great footage of Melba soloing on her own arrangement of 'My Reverie'. I think whe wrote that one for Gillespie's orchestra though. What a 'bone lineup in that band - for the Belgian broadcast Melba, Quentin Jackson. Jimmy Cleveland, Ake Persson and with Julius Watkins on french horn.

Arranged by Benny Golson?

That's what they all say.. My memories of that 'single' are a bit hazy now but I certainly remember the pudgy troll being on Top Of The Pops on TV surrounded by adoring nymphets - dressed in pseudo-tartan I seem to recall. Thank you not for reminding me of all this !

Amazing work from the Austrian scene -- Pretty low-key lead-off by Dusty standards. -
Count me in as another who really likes this session. I was bemused that it has got such lukewarm reviews - commercially sounding and 'of its time' yes but a sterling effort by Mesrs Henderson and Gasca. Nicely recorded too.
