  1. Sounds like quite the 'tome'.
  2. I've heard nothing of late regarding an imminent release of this on CD. No mention on AAJ either.
  3. No kidding ! I can't see current favourable circumstances lasting indefinitely.
  4. Didn't realise he lived there - that's where I saw him at the Lacy gig.
  5. That's interesting, Brownie. One of the greatest piano recitals I have ever seen was Martial Solal in the Georgian Assembly Rooms at Bath around 1988. An incredible virtuoso solo performance that night in a fitting venue.
  6. No kidding. Must have been just fractions of a second in it. The driver apparently put her foot down, which saved the day.
  7. If that's the case, this is one 'Conn' from the latest batch that I will nab. The 'new' material looks nice too.
  8. This is, quite simply, a KILLER record! I LOVE Chico's stuff from this period. Yep. It's been in endless rotation. I love the sound quality that Speakers Corner have been able to achieve - a very 'uniform' balance with lots of 'air' (damn, I'm starting to sound like a wine critic ). Surely better than the original maybe?
  9. Wishing you a nice birthday ! ... and good luck !
  10. I found that Rothko episode fascinating. A couple of years before I had walked past that very place on the Bowery (next to the humongous kitchen appliance place I think) which he rented and something made me stop and have a look at the place - no particular reason at the time and I had no idea whatsoever of its significance. Very odd - I was just 'en route' to the Downtown Music Gallery.
  11. Hey, I'm 'super bad'.
  12. Chico Hamilton 'El Chico' (Speakers Corner stereo) The Germans did it again !
  13. Saw an R&B video of him on UK TV recently from the mid-60s before he became a 'star' and the ladies started throwing knickers at him. Not bad - sort of in the Eric Burdon style.
  14. Sugar Ray Robinson Miles Davis Frank Bruno
  15. That's rough, but true! Strangely enough, I'm not a big fan either.
  16. Thad & Mel - but Basie Roulette Studio and Larry Young score very high too. Difficult to choose. I'm also a big fan of that Woody Shaw too.
  17. I wonder if the wide temperature swigs at a place like Minneapolis have anyhting to do with it - from -30C or less in Winter through to +30/40 in Summer. I know that these bridges are built to cope with these temperature swings but it can't have helped the fatigue levels.
  18. John Coltrane 'Africa Brass' (UK Impulse stereo)
  19. Caught Laurie at a panel interview talking about Art some years ago and I concur. Very eloquent speaker too.
  20. More sad news. I'll be sure to give the 'Motion' set another spin over the next few days. RIP.
  21. Really very sorry to hear this. At the time of opening this post his very fine playing on the Art Blakey Quartet Impulse session was playing on my system. I was thinking at the time just what a fabulous player he was (his work on 'Africa Brass' is a particular favourite). He'll be missed. Sat right next to him once at a Steve Lacy gig. Looked like a great guy - and a big guy, for sure.
  22. I have two of them on vinyl - 'Flare Up' (Philips) and 'Warm Smiles' (RCA). 'Fega' eludes me. I'll have to dig out that 'TCB' on Philips, haven't listened to it for a while.
  23. Art Blakey Quartet 'A Jazz Message' (HMV, mono)
  24. It's a compilation that came out a few years after the Surman and Skidmore sessions on it - came out around 1973 I think on vinyl and is quite elusive. I like this Vocalion CD and can recommend it. Alan Skidmore's sessions of this vintage (in fact of any vintage) are well worth seeking out. Don't miss the 'Once Upon A Time' CD either (too bad that the very fine 'TCB' hasn't been reissued).
