  1. IMHO global market and science are out of control, I mean that citizens have no longer the informations, ergo, we are going towards a undemocratic world. I tell you a story about junk food, a well known italian potato chip brand. The potatoes grown in Westfalia, Germany, loaded on trucks, reach Sicily, Italy, where they are cleaned and dryied, then loaded on trucks back to Westafalia, where they are sliced, loaded on trucks toward Zurich, Switzerland, where they are fried, loaded on trucks reach Genoa, Italy, where they are packed, loaded on trucks towards markets. I have no doubt that all this long travelling is more profitable for the company then producing potato chips in one place, I am just asking myself: who will pay the social costs of this process: hundreds of trucks on the road with car accidents, cancers because of pollution, etc? Tax payers cover the cost for the NHS, road mainteinance, etc. But yes, I could buy stocks of the company and get rich, until the next oil or subprime crisis and I have my cheap potato chips at the market. Let's face it: this system should be changed, it can't last forever.
  2. Part of the problem is that long-term medical studies can't always use controlled experiments -- that means you have to rely on statistical techniques to tease out causal relationships. And if the statistical techniques are not up to snuff scientists can get spurious correlations. In combination with distorted incentives for academics and scientific publications (I don't think the bias is solely with mainstream journalists), this can lead to incorrect research being published in the short term. Guy Correct, though I am nor a blind believer of the optimistic view of a good Science that will save our planet and lifes. Since scientific researches cost Big Money, the guys with the big cigar, and the stockholders, want short term results. Not exactly the best premise for serious, and costly, long-term medical studies. The facts that global long-term social costs are beyond the goal of a private company, and politician's time-space is limited up the next election, make me deeply sceptical. Maybe I am wrong and cynical, but I see the today's system like this: if, after twenty years, they'll get the evidence that cell phones caused brain' cancers, they would replace with something else, "totally safe". Meantime Nokia and Motorola Groups have had entered in the market of anti-cancer medicine, buying a consistent numbers of stocks of pharmaceutical companies. And so on.
  3. IMHO the main problems with these kind of news, and I mean all of them, included the GMF, global warming, nuclear power plants, new medicines, etc. are: 1) the goal of journalists is to get big headlines, so the contents of the articles are often lacking of scientific evidences. 2) a reliable scientific research should collect at least twenty years of datas on a big sample, expecially in long term disease like cancer. 3) the debate among scientists is poisoned by the big interests involved in such things. The final result is that for common people is almost impossible to reach a correct information about issues that involves their health. I want you to remember that ages ago they started to feed strictly vegetarian animals with meat derived food (and antiobiotics and steroid and God knows what else) in order to maximize the grown, they said it was perfectly safe, and we had the mad cow disease. And what about the latest mozzarella's dioxin scandal? Well, since I'll still have a brain, I have the right to know in wich kind of way I am poisoned.
  4. Just trashed my cell phone and lit a Camel up, thanks.
  5. Eberhard Weber's afternoon: The Colours of Chloe Yellow Fields Orchestra All ECM, obviously.
  6. Side B. Finally. I had the same problem tonight with my daughter : she wanted to watch cartoons on TV. But my Don Sleet's All Members, jazzland orange DG original was spinning. I said no. Don Sleet wins. Shees...and they wonder why young people don't like jazz.
  7. IMHO no, 155 bucks is a fair price, and you got the bonus tracks and the booklet, though I admit I dislike the RVG Remastered sound, usually I still prefer the early BN cd. I have a "47 west" stereo without "Ear" of At The Jazz Corner Of The World II so I presume it's an early Liberty with old label. I'll give to it a spin right now. edit: channel separation is not an issue on this, at least on my rig. Nice sound and a punchy double bass on my copy. If I should find a flaw it might be the piano's recording, slightly distorted on some of the peaks. BTW never noticed the Mosaic lp set as bad sounding. edit of edit: actually the sound is not so great as in the first take I heard, (ATJCOTW vol 2), don't know how to call it, a tape defect? edit of edit of edit: the very same on Mosaic reissue, definitely a unlucky recording. The studio sessions on Mosaic sound nice from what I am hearing right now.
  8. Yep, it sounds ok, but be careful and frugal in the use. My experience with this kind of stuff is that they could left a oily residue. We are not talking of a transmission chain of a motorbike.
  9. Probably 2 problems. The knob noise can be answered by any of the radio guys on board. Used to be a spray, but not sure it hasn't been banned for atmospheric reason. Usually dust does it. I don't know your gears, but I use compressed air, after detaching all covers around the knob.
  10. Not bad, that's the very same way I drive my bike after my weekly bank's robbery.
  11. I bet there is more stuff like this in Brownie's personal collection.
  12. Sad news, but not a surprise at 93. I loved the actor. RIP

    Cables

I don't fully agree. When I replaced interconnects or speaker cables, the sound of my system changed. Any cable has its own "sound" to my ears. The problems begin when one starts talking about "better" and "truthful" and all the audiophile related BS. So you can ask yourself if a 1K $ interconnect sounds a 1k $ better. I have no answer, but I hear the difference. Now if you ask me what I like better between two cables, I can answer, though I couldn't swear on "better", my judgment is based on my personal tastes.
  14. Usually he had DuNann's masters, so...
  15. Yep, I want it. A bit envious. It's a pretty good sounding copy, Porcy and in great condition. My understanding is that the majority of copies of this one are very noisy - a real shame. New Jazz's quality control was never one of their strongest points. My opinion too, but a mono cartridge helps.
  16. I want it. A bit envious. now playing: Thad Jones's BN/UA Mosaic, an astounding transfert/remastering/mastering of the BN 1500 sound. I am really impressed. Ah, yes, the music...Burrell and Thad, Mitchell and Thad...great.
  17. organissimo relocation to Italy, 2010. Gonna be tough on you guys moving Jim's instrument of choice via motorcycle! Are you kidding? We are in the third world where the answer is always: NO PROBLEM. http://www.slideshare.net/yasas/the-real-kingsof-logistics/
  18. That's damn cheap ! Minimum I've seen round here is £1.03 a litre, which equates to about £4.60 a gallon, ie. a socking $9.75 a gallon There were 'plans' by the Government to add another 2p per litre tax in todays budget but looks like they might defer it. Maybe they think they will have another fuel mutiny on their hands. Around here minimum is £1.039. But where you have to go to get that price, you might as well pay the average of £1.069 and save your petrol. MG I think I'll pass on my planned motorbike trip to Scotland this summer. Don't cancel the trip - but I recommend a 50cc Garelli Bimatic Garelli Sweet memories
  19. Aha! Now we have a plot for a legal movie against corporations. Bev, wich title would you suggest?
  20. It sounds like a good plot for a romantic movie with Meg Ryan.
  21. Don't know if the Mosaic has all the tracks, nor I have it, but my Columbia Jazz Masterpiece cds sound pretty awful, for sure the recent Mosaic remastering is light years' better.
  22. Jefferson Airplane - Crown Of Creation - RCA, original "black Dog" label.

Low tax on income, lots of small taxes on goods. Guess who'll be more affected by this kind of taxation?
  24. McIntosh products are VERY overrated. I once had an audiophile buddy who lent me some of their classic tube amplifiers, just for comparison to some other amps I had heard. They are not as dynamic or natural sounding; though they look pretty. My HH Scott kicks their butt for sound quality. Even the Decware amps sound better. Totally agree, you could find hundred of better sounding amp/preamp on used market and at cheaper prices. Never understood the worshipping of McIntosh products, maybe they were "the best money could afford" back in the sixties, (though back then Quad and Marantz were pretty good too) but now
