  1. Rest in peace Bill. WKCR.ORG is playing his music through the night. 84 years young.
  2. No I haven't. It isn't out yet. The release date is September 2010 A big fan of Rollins and it appears to have Sonny's blessing. Sonny has never been on that likes to draw attention to himself, so if he is giving the thumbs up, it should be worth reading.
  3. Report from the concert. Guitarist Russell Malone is now playing with Sonny. Here are his thoughts on the Discover Jazz gig in Burlington, Vermont where Jim Hall sat in: "The gig was a lot of fun. Sonny was in a good mood, laughing and talking with some of the band members just before we hit the stage. One of the the things he talked about was the importance of exercise, a sensible diet, and drinking plenty of water. He said that these were some of the things that have helped him to stay around for almost eighty years. And we are very blessed to still have him here with us. When he starts to play, you can see him transform into something else. I don't know what, but it is as if something takes possession of him. It's beautiful and scary, all at once. And last night was no exception. He played beautifully, and he was very encouraging and inspiring to the band. Then, towards the end of the show, he invited Jim Hall to the stage. To see Sonny, Jim, and Bob Cranshaw on the same stage was surreal. That one still hasn't sunk in yet. All in all, it was a great night of music."

  11. From the Burlington Discover Jazz website, Sonny's playing with Bob Cranshaw on bass, Russell Malone on guitar, Sammy Figeroa on percussion and Kobie Watkins on drums. On Sonny Rollins'web site it says Jim Hall will sit in on guitar. http://www.sonnyrollins.com/

  20. I was at his 84 birthday party at the Jazz Standard in NYC. He didn't play but was a guest while other musicians played. It was a wonderful show. I did catch him and his band the next night. Just as wonderful a show.
  21. Thanks, I will do some more searching. Hopefully I can find them on CD.
  22. Back in the late 60s, the Modern Jazz Quartet recorded to albums on the Beatles' Apple records. "Under the Jasmin Tree" is one, the second I don't have the title. Does anyone know if these two recordings were ever released on CD? Does anyone know the title of the second album?
  23. Well there is probably no way of asking Horace what he disliked. Hopefully his sone Gregory will think differently, that is if these tapes still exist. In Horace Silver's autobiography he claimed to have a closet full unrelease music from throughout his career.
