Today I was listening to "Out to Lunch" on WKCR. The theme was 1955. They played a tune by John Dennis, a piano player. It was from his only album called "New Piano Expressions." It was with Charles Mingus and Max Roach. The tune they played was really good. What ever happen to this guy? It doesn't appear that he recorded anything else in his career as a leader or a sideman.

These best of CD's then act as a learning tool for the novice. I have to admit I have one box set of four CD's that are the best of from a group of different artists. The only reason I bought it, was for two tracks that were not available elsewhere.

Is this a Freudian slip that you plan to be "chemically enhanced" for the performance? Yes it was.

I don' think there are many board members here that would buy a best of CD by a jazz artists. We rather have the music in its original state. But it seems every major jazz artists such as Bird, Miles, Coltrane, just to name a few, has a best of CD. But I am going to ask; do you have any best of compilations by a jazz artist?

I plan on seeing one of the shows, unless the wife makes plans for me. I'll tell you the set list and give a report when I go.

I will definitely be there to catch this giant when he plays the Blue Note on March 15th and 16th. I can't recall the last time he was playing in NY. Anyone playing to go to the Blue Note to catch one of these shows?

My fondest memory of smalls was about ten years ago. My friend and myself were at the club for the after hour jam sessions that local guitarist come to. All of a sudden the door opens up and in walks George Benson with his guitar. He started a challenge with whoever wanted to play with him. Needless to say, George Benson can still play straight ahead when he wants to. He blew everyone away. Turns out he lives across the river in NJ. I believe in Englewood Cliffs NJ. In fact it wasn't the first time he showed up at the club to do this. That was 10 years ago. Now with ti reopening, maybe he'll do it again.

Charles can swing. Over the past summer I went to see Clark Terry. Charles was in the audience wathcing the show. Clark Terry saw him and asked him to come on to the stage. He did, and smoked. I am thinking of seeing his big band this weekend or the Heath Brothers.

Didn't know of him, but sad to hear he's died.

I've noticed that the Verve LP Reproduction series all contain the date the CD will go out of print. I wonder if this helps with sales? Its not going to make me buy a CD knowning it's going out of print, unless it's a Mosaic.

How about "Swingin' till the Girls come home" by Oscar Pettiford. This is a great swinging blues number.
