  1. With the recent passing of Jimmy Smith, it made me wonder who will be the new king of the organ.
  2. Just imagine the G man doing a record with J.O.S. Jimmy would have to play real loud to drown him out, that's for sure. This thread is digressing real fast.
  3. I would like to get added to the list. Probable be a year or so before it gets to me, but I can getit rolling.
  4. Lambert Hendricks and Ross did a version of Three Blind Mice.
  5. Wondering if anyone has all of the RVG series by Blue Note. I only bought the ones that I didn't have at all in my collection.
  6. That great. All we needed was to see the gum being blown up as a bubble.
  7. Where would I have heard him? The name doesn't ring a bell.
  8. Let's remember Wes today on his 80th birthday
  9. Good for you Mike.
  10. I was a musician and I recall seeing Herb Ellis Barney Kessel and Chaile Byrd on a program called Sound Stage. I was hooked ever since. That was back in the mid 1970's.
  11. Burning Manure Pile in Nebraska Goes Out Top Stories - AP Burning Manure Pile in Nebraska Goes Out 2 hours, 2 minutes ago Top Stories - AP MILFORD, Neb. - It took nearly four months, but to the relief of neighbors miles around, a burning manure pile has been extinguished. David Dickinson, owner and manager of Midwest Feeding Co., said Wednesday that several weeks of pulling the 2,000-ton pile apart proved effective by late last week. "We got far enough through it, that it quit," Dickinson said. Dickinson's feedlot, about 20 miles west of Lincoln, takes in as many as 12,000 cows at a time from farmers and ranchers and fattens them for market. Byproducts from the massive operation resulted in a dung pile measuring 100 feet long, 30 feet high and 50 feet wide. Heat from the decomposing manure deep inside the pile is believed to have eventually ignited the manure. The Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality told Dickinson that his smoldering dung pile violated clean-air laws and it worked with him as tried to extinguish it. Huge feedlots have become commonplace, and dung fires have occurred around the country. Dickinson said his pile may have been ignited in part because of glass clippings his feedlot had been accepting from the city of Milford. The clippings could be more combustible and he plans to stop accepting them, Dickinson said. ___ Information from: Lincoln Journal Star
  12. Dead at 33. That can exlpain the small output from him.
  13. HAs anyone read this book?
  14. I can't think of a world without jazz. I guess it would be the sound of nature or the blues. At least there would be improvisation with either of these two choices.
  15. Thanks for the replies. Wasn't Debut records Chiles Mingus' label?
  16. Today I was listening to "Out to Lunch" on WKCR. The theme was 1955. They played a tune by John Dennis, a piano player. It was from his only album called "New Piano Expressions." It was with Charles Mingus and Max Roach. The tune they played was really good. What ever happen to this guy? It doesn't appear that he recorded anything else in his career as a leader or a sideman.
  17. These best of CD's then act as a learning tool for the novice. I have to admit I have one box set of four CD's that are the best of from a group of different artists. The only reason I bought it, was for two tracks that were not available elsewhere.
  18. Is this a Freudian slip that you plan to be "chemically enhanced" for the performance? Yes it was.
  19. I don' think there are many board members here that would buy a best of CD by a jazz artists. We rather have the music in its original state. But it seems every major jazz artists such as Bird, Miles, Coltrane, just to name a few, has a best of CD. But I am going to ask; do you have any best of compilations by a jazz artist?
  20. I plan on seeing one of the shows, unless the wife makes plans for me. I'll tell you the set list and give a report when I go.
  21. I will definitely be there to catch this giant when he plays the Blue Note on March 15th and 16th. I can't recall the last time he was playing in NY. Anyone playing to go to the Blue Note to catch one of these shows?
  22. From the list, I choose Happenings. You could have added the rest of his Blue Note sessions.
  23. My fondest memory of smalls was about ten years ago. My friend and myself were at the club for the after hour jam sessions that local guitarist come to. All of a sudden the door opens up and in walks George Benson with his guitar. He started a challenge with whoever wanted to play with him. Needless to say, George Benson can still play straight ahead when he wants to. He blew everyone away. Turns out he lives across the river in NJ. I believe in Englewood Cliffs NJ. In fact it wasn't the first time he showed up at the club to do this. That was 10 years ago. Now with ti reopening, maybe he'll do it again.
